david brooks is away tonight. it's great to see you both. the classified documents case has a trial date. the federal judge ordered it for may 20. what do you make of this scenario? this is after most of the primaries. it's before the conventions. >> i bake that in. i thought there would be no distinction between donald trump's campaign appearances and his going in for his various court appearances for the various trials he is part of. all i know is this. i am glad there is a date set before the general election, assuming he is the republican nominee for president. i am glad there is a date set because no matter what happens in terms of the presidential nomination, he is now going to be held publicly accountable through trial for his role, assuming there is indeed -- she will be held accountable for withholding, taking classified documents, including nuclear secrets. i am glad he is going to be held accountable for it. geoff: he faces six civil cases in this cycle. doesn't this incentivize his rivals to stay in the race longer than they migh

david brooks is away.pecial counsel jack smith leveled new charges against donald trump this week, including the allegation that trump and others sought to delete security video of rooms in which boxes of classified documents were kept. how do these additional charges change or expand our understanding of this case? >> what's interesting is when i talked to a lot of trump supporters about this, they were very disappointed to hear this. of all the things in this document case, the cover-up is going to be the worst. this is -- i question if a lot of these things are going to be or should be pursued, but if they get one of these people to turn on him and say, yeah, he told me to cover up this, that's going to be very bad for him. his opponents looking at this politically, need to actually quit resorting to defending him if they want to make any headway against him and start saying, look, this is a cover-up. as your earlier guest said today on the show, this is evidence of doing something wrong. having said th
