but cnn's gabe cohen is superexcited. you have to join him tonight. gabe cohen is there right now.ell us what is happening. >> reporter: i'm excite too. it is sweltering, it feels close to 100 degrees right now in washington. if you look behind me, you can see, it doesn't seem to be slowing a lot of people down and we're expecting many thousands more will be arriving in the coming hours. the national mall will be packed for this spectacular fireworks show that's set to go off just after 9:00 p.m. tonight. one of the biggest in the entire country. it's 17 1/2 minutes long. it may not sound like a lot, but we know that a lot of work and a lot of money, close to $270,000, are used to make sure that this is both safe and spectacular. we talked with the head of the company that puts on this show just a few minutes ago. take a listen, brianna, to what he told me. >> it's hundreds of man hours of work that go into the project. the devil is in the details. we have over a mile of wire out there. dozens of computer modules, circuits, it's high-tech and complicated. >> reporter: and all of th

we go to the steamy washington, d.c., and gabe cohen is there, and gabe, give us a sense of how awesomeis there. feeling awesome this morning? >> well, john, i have to tell you that the good news is that we have a lit cloud coverage this hour, and the breeze is coming through according to the not so scientific measurement, and it is feeling about 90 degrees, and if you are looking quiet here on the national mall, but we are seeing some folks coming around, and people wandering through, and the bike tours and thing like that, and the temperatures are expected to spike, and spike dramatically and quickly this afternoon, and it could be 100 degrees here in washington for the first time in seven years, and with the humidity feeling closer to 110 degrees, today, tomorrow and even into saturday. the mayor here is activating emergency center, including renting five public buses, and the public buses including the one that just passed us is going to be stationing across the district for the most vuler inable -- vulnerable people who might not have access to emergency management. >> we are very

gabe cohen joins me now. tell me how the jets got so close together.ed and air traffic control, how did this happen? >> that's the big question that the faa is investigating at this point. let me lay out exactly how this played out. what we know. allegiant, this flight takes off from fort lauderdale on sunday, headed for kentucky. right around the orlando area, about 23,000 feet up, when suddenly the pilot is told to go east. we have this statement from the faa explaining what happened. they basically said that air traffic control in miami directed the pilot to turn eastbound over the ocean. at that 23,000 feet altitude. when it crossed in front of a northbound gulf stream business jet. at this point, these to aircraft are headed in the same path, but both pilots, fortunately, got an automated alert that basically there was another plane flying at the same altitude and immediate action needed to be taken. bear in mind, about two and a half miles apart. that may sound look a big distance, but -- >> they're going fast. >> this is airborne traffic speeds,
