in response swofford panned a scathing op-ed in the daily beast. taught or hadn't wanted to know. i wrote an honest book, and i thought that honesty would be the books spine and help sustain it in the world. the 20 years later, a politically stacked coup board can over a two-hour meeting cancel access to my work in the experiences of me and my fellow marines feels deeply un-american. joining me now is anthony swofford, gulf war veteran and author of jarhead, one of the most famous books for young readers about the subject of war. i was shocked that when i read the daily beast piece. it's not about lgbtq issues, it's not about black history. how did your book get caught up in this? >> i think the school board was stacked with people who were far right of center with the intention to sculpture the culture that their kids are exposed to in certain ways. in the fall they instituted a policy that basically any member of the community could put up a book to be banned, and apparently for some reason jarhead was the first on someone's list. the books about
