richard henry pratt, at fort marion, in florida. during what i referred to as the dakota war, the great sioux war, in 1876, pows from that war were taken to florida and held at fort marion, pratt was in charge of the pows. he got this idea, these pows are trained the they could return to the great sioux reservation and return out west and be emissaries for american culture. works with the hampton institute in virginia which was created in 1868 as a school for friedman to train how to be american after slavery. and served as an indian school version of this, let's do this. they set up the school in carlisle and lead this. from 1879 to 1918, 10,000 native american children go through the school. a lot of people coming through this. the initial children brought to carlisle were look to and they are brought as leverage to prevent another uprising. we have your kids, can't fight back because we have your kids. the us government, go join them. the moment you step foot in carlisle, they strip everything that was native american out of you.

this is the first of two treaties signed and fort laramie. and what the 1851 treaty is supposed to do is recognize native american claims in the region. while the same point exchange for that recognition and anybody's, annual payments of certain amounts of cash especially when we are talking about the lakota, cheyenne, a couple others i'm forgetting off the top of my head, recognizing the territory in exchange for kind of allowing safe passage for the settlers with the idea they were not going to stop. you can pass through the territory. that's perfectly fine with us. in exchange, you recognize the land claim and ani little bit of money that would be nice. originally when it's negotiated it's a 50 year anybody so the idea is until 1901 the u.s. government would be paying these nations for the right to go across their land. congress changes it to a ten year pay scheme without telling anyone who signs the treaty. of course when they find out, they are like no, that's not okay. but regardless the treaty was basically broken almost immediately in

to clear a lot of houses quickly because of the footprint of fort myers. in the big bend, you may have two houses on a five-mile road. that is going to take a very long time to clear those. we have more than enough assets and resources to get that done in a timely manner, but i want to set expectations. some of this will take longer than what we experienced with the initial search and rescue in fort myers, again, because of the landscape. we will have to do a lot of tree cutting and emergency access to get into those areas to then do the securing and stabilizing. but we are working through that. we have maintained communications with our counties. we had a couple of 911 centers that went down briefly for 20 or 30 minutes. all 911 calls have been answered. there are minor backlogs in taylor county and madison county that local officials are working through. we are separating resources to help them get through those calls as quickly as possible. even though we had 91 one calls, there is no one in distress that has not been taking care of. -- taken care of. t
