kristen: that is a conundrum for sure. what are some of the legal issues that come out of this that will be examined you think for a long time in law schools? prof. abel: it's a fascinating case because conspiracies are interesting. what the law does is hold a group of people responsible together, so a conspirator is responsible for the actions of other people working for that same purpose. one of the things here is perhaps some of the conspirators knew that they were lying and that they had lost the election and some of them didn't. i suspect donald trump will make some kind of argument, i think i saw it already, that he relied on legal advice, i believe he is going to say. he might try to say he didn't know any of this was false. that will be one important issue. what did donald trump know, what did the other people working with him know? the other question is, what does the first amendment protect when they lie? there are pretty broad protections for allies. you can lie and that's not a crime. where it becomes a crime i

kristen: ok.ut you think it's ok for most kids to go to school at this point, being in a classroom with no mask? >> yes. kristen: what if they have some minor symptoms like a sore throat, they may be feel a little sick, should you give them a covid test or should you not worry about it and assume it is a cold hands on them to school? >> i think for right now given what's going around, it probably will be prudent to stay home or keep the kid home when they are sick. we know that it doesn't cause as much impact in kids compared to older adults, but it can be very disruptive, particularly because teachers can get ill, staff in the schools can get ill. you want to lower the odds. we are not going for 0% chance but we want to decrease the risk. kristen: i guess this is the ethical/moral question here, where people go, should we test? with a sore throat, i might go to work or school, but if i test positive for covid, i'm going to feel like i can't go. how are you advising people? perhaps you are not, on

kristen: wake up to what?hat you stated. >> post-covid, policies encouraged people to leave cities. then the catastrophe that nobody wants to talk about. it's a hot potato. the said he doesn't function -- the city doesn't function on three day a week or four a day work weeks. government has facilitated the failure of downtowns. when you don't have active people at their desks, you don't have commerce. people don't go to events. they don't go to bars and restaurants. little by little, the local businesses simply evaporate. that has happened in san francisco. you just have to look at the statistics and see the number of successful retailers or businesses that abandoned the cities. that is number one. when you have a tyranny of minority. people thought it would a good idea to invite people to live openly on the streets. bodily functions in public. still things with no recourse. and that's no normal -- it's not normal. it exists in san francisco because there's been a policy failure no one wants to come to grips w

kristen: can i just ask you how you notice the dimension? what did you look at to determine there was this link between air pollution and dementia, and what were you looking at? boya: retirement study which includes about 30,000 participants across the u.s. all the participants are older than 50 years old. among them, we measured their air pollution exposure and cognitive functions. we used models to find is a connection. kristen: what are the pollution levels you needed to be at to have an impact on dementia? are we talking about really high pollution levels or even levels the government does not caution you about? boya: unfortunately, currently we do not have a clear threshold for this exposure risk. the epa indeed has for long-term air pollution exposure. the standard is 12 per cubic meter in the u.s. the exposure level is 11. which means the average exposure is even lower than the current standard. kristen: that is a little disconcerting, because you may need to take precautionary measures even when people are not sounding the alarm. rea

[laughter] an issue gop candidates might concerned about, abortion, came in ohio last night. what did voters decide? >> in november voters will decide whether to amend the state constitution to enshrine the right to abortion but yesterday they had to vote to basically change the rules to make it harder to pass and it would 50% to pass but that failed to so the effort to amend the state constitution in november will only need 50% of the vote and if you look at the exit polls in ohioio and national polling on abortion rights it's much more achievable bar so if you continue the pattern in montana and kansas where voters have come down on the side of protecting rights for women. kristen: normally in a presidential election year you like to see the parties put on the ballot other issues that would drive what they think would bring their voters but in this case do you think republicans will not want abortion on the ballot? >> for republicans about the best way to do it. ballot initiative ha

kristen: some of the top u.c.'s are down to 10% admissions, so many great children will be left behind. given that, how do you form a college list. a list of schools to apply to? lauren: the advice i give is to think about around 10 schools on your list. at some people are going to have less, that's fine. i would not want to more than that because it is a hard -- it's hard work and you have to show sincere interest in those schools. but you have to have a range of types of schools in terms of selectivity. if you are applying to very highly selective places, that have the 10% admit rates, you also have to have places for which you are in their wheelhouse and you think you have a good shot at admission, and them places that are a likely school, a safety school, a place you are confident you will be admitted into. because you want to have at the end of the day options next spring. kristen: talk about financial applications or financial aid, the fafsa forms should have been simplified this year. is it happening? lauren

kristen: is this partly in lieu of school as well? understand a lot of the schools are shut down, rg -- right? >> the schools on the east side of the other nurse trying to open back up but the schools in lahaina, one school is completely destroyed and two other schools are going to be closed. we think for a bit of time, while they are able to clear out debris and get access to them. there is definitely a need. the department of education is doing a phenomenal job trying to get back on their feet. we are here as a stopgap measure to help out until everybody can get back to where they are supposed to be. kristen: is it mostly about ensuring food, activities to occupy them, or is there also mental health support? >> most of it is just making sure there is a space for kids to be kids. they process these kind of things very differently. being around their peers, doing fun activities, arts and crafts, games helps them work through it. we do some sort of trauma informed programming which takes the form of things like gratitude circles. we tr

kristen: president biden is coming next week.hat would you like him and the federal government to do, keeping in mind some of these issues and inequities you brought up? >> the federal response has actually been as swift as i would like to see it. had fema dispatch as quickly as possible. no one was prepared for this degree of fire on a topical island -- on a tropical island. we only have so many firefighters, first responders. governor newsom and other officials were also ready to help. the direct response has been good. what's needed on the level is to accelerate the transition to clean energy because ultimately if we don't, this is going to keep happening more and more. the urgency that we face right now is no longer -- i do claimant work -- --i do climate pretty much full-time. at any day, you can wake up tomorrow morning in your neighborhood could be flattened -- your church, your school, the grocery store could be reduced to ashes tomorrow, that is the urgency we need to be operating with. to do should declare a climate eme

kristen: wiped out by wildfire.scape the flames in maui are struggling for basic necessities. good afternoon. i'm kristen sze. larry: i'm larry beil. the line of fire, now blamed for 59 deaths. much of that historic town is completely destroyed. kristen: the governor says the fires could be the worst natural desire in the state's victory. here's a look at the smoldering destruction and we hear from survivors. reporter: once the capital of the kingdom of hawaii. >> it breaks my heart that all the history from back in the 1800s, dust, ash and dust. reporter: the tropical paradise known for its lush landscape and picturesque beaches, now unrecognizable from some areas. as many as 1000 people are unaccounted for. they stress spotty communication is preventing many from contacting loved ones and expect that number to decrease in the coming days. as flames rage through the town, thousands, evacuating, some even jumping into the ocean to escape the flames, like sean doherty. >>

joining me now is kristen welker and laura jarrett. let me start with you, laura. the start date of a trial is upon us, october 23rd. what happened there? who does that apply to? >> it's really limited. it only applies to one of mr. trump's co-defendants who started all of this by demanding a speedy trial. the judge, as you mentioned, just signed off on it a short time ago. as of now, this incredibly fast schedule only applies to mr. ken chesebro, part of the scheme to submit the fake pro trump electors to congress. his case is now split off from the other 18 co-defendants including the former president whose lawyers signaled they want to slow things down. >> and you have new reporting from those close to the former president. >> they're defiant. i asked about the mood inside the former president's orbit. they point to the millions of views he got for that online interview. look, some of those who are close to the former president are concerned. this is taking place in a key state that mr. trump almost certainly needs if he wants to win re-election in 2024. they're

ok, kristen sloomey bringing us the latest lines there from the un. thanks very much, kristen. wildfires are threatening the capital of canada's northwest territories. 20,000 systems of yellowknife have been ordered to leave before the fast-moving flames arrive. it's the worst wildfire season in canada, with more than 1,000 fires burning nationwide. rosalind jordan has more. wildfires are burning within 17 kilometers of yellowknife, the capital city of canada's northwest territories. officials say it's time for the city's 20,000 residents to leave. please take this order seriously and prepare to leave the city by noon on friday. officials already have started airlifting other provincial residents who can't drive themselves to safety. those who can drive may need police escort to help them navigate smoke-filled highways. emergency personnel say right now the weather is working against them. there is a possibility that without rain, the fire reaches the outskirts of yellowknife by the weekend. it is approaching, but there's time to complete the community evacuation. 20,000 square

to the point kristen made on the optics it is extraordinary. whether we get a mugshot or not we have been looking live at the former leader of the free world at an active jail. this is not a federal courthouse. this is not ceremonial. this is the real deal where a lot of defendants go to end up booked just like donald trump who not only is the former president but the current republican front-runner. there is a political risk here. we talked about it a bit. in the primary, post republicans are standing by the former president. we've seen that in recent polling. half of republicans do not believe he did anything wrong when it comes to interference with the election the crux of the case here in georgia as well as the federal indictment. looking more broadly half of all respondents do. there is a difference to how this plays essentially politically in the primary election versus the general election where i think some of the concern is coming from if donald trump is the nominee. what happens in a state that is such an important battleground? >> le
