it is about to become the first tropical storm to hit southern california since 1939. flash flood warnings are up across the region. look at that dramatic footage. this is what hilary unleashed on mexico's baja california. one person in the coastal town died when their vehicle was swept away. weather forecasters are warning those in the path of the storm should be prepared for catastrophic and life threatening floods. we are covering the storm from all angles from the weather centers to the cities in its path, the warning that blankets much of southern california today. stay off the roads if you can. let me show you this. a small mud slide temporarily shut down a lane of the 14 freeway north of los angeles. crews were able to clear it quickly. in palm springs, california the weather is starting to come down on top of our reporter. officials there took the precaution of closing some roads hours ago. how are things going where you are? >> reporter: now we're really starting to feel the brunt of this starting to make its way here, jim. i've only been outside for five minut

california. here's the upper low offshore. high pressure over the southern u.s. and here is the conveyor belt of equatorial subtropical air being thrown northward, which is the reason we're seeing incredible rain rates in what is typically the driest areas of california. some high deserts, mojave desert picking up a few inches of rain when their annual average is just about 2 inches of rain. around the bay area, tomorrow morning, you begin to see moisture on the increase here and a chance you'll begin to see scattered showers through the morning commute and a potential with some daytime heating also to see some thunderstorms inland during the day. so, a few areas could clock in with some measurable rainfall here during the damon. as we head towards tuesday, notice futurecast doesn't have any more showers and a lot less cloud cover as we turn it to drier, hotter temperatures. 90s returning inland on tuesday. by wednesday, upper 90s to near 100 degrees and still in those mid to upper 90s inland through thursday. we go hot and dry mid-week heading towards next week.

half hour as we are dealing with some of the effects of right now, tropical storm hilary in southern californiaing at those effects this morning yesterday. it was a washout for so many southern areas across the state. well, the bay area we were looking at that sunshine throughout the course of the day yesterday. so it's quite the 2 different tales depending on which side of the state you are on this morning, although still calm for the majority of the bay area. we are looking at some of that moisture from hillary across the region. what we are seeing right now is some nice clear skies. you can see that there is a breeze. it's pushing around. those leaves on the trees out here. and we do have a few isolated showers out there this morning. most notably some brief rainfall up into solano county and then especially as you cross out into the central valley and right there on the other side of the map offshore, some pretty heavy thunderstorm activity about 100 miles west of francisco. most of us are dry right now. but watch out for a few isolated showers and that chance of showers actually does conti

take a look at the storms impact across southern california. palm springs picked up 75% of his annual rainfall in just 12 hours on sunday. they had just over three inches of rain downtown, swamping streets and pushing flood channels to capacity. towering over the desert peak, they had 10 inches of rain. even the land of little rain in owens valley had more than 2 1/2 inches. take a look at this video out of riverside county. last night around 1:00 ama drone video shot , showing floodwaters that breach the city is intersections have been turned into rushing rivers. you could see people standing on roofs of cars and buildings. just waiting to be rescued. if the rain was not bad enough, the ground was shaking. there is a 5.1 magnitude earthquake in the middle of the storm. the u.s. geological survey says the quake was followed by several aftershocks. so far, no reports of major damage or injuries. michael spencer is in san clemente tracking the impact of that storm. actually, we will get to max darrow as the rains are reaching las vegas. he is rep

boulders tumbled onto roads, and a magnitude 5.1 quake added to the first tropical storm to hit southern california since the great depression. there's rain from san diego county up into the southern part of san joaquin valley and central nevada as well. and here's a look at what the massive area of rain has been doing across southern california all day today. palm springs picked up 75% of its annual rainfall in 12 hours. they had just over three inches of rain downtown pushing flood channels to capacity. some peaks had ten inches of rain. the owens valley had two and a half inches. in santa clarita, the rain is coming down so heavily, it caused the side of the road to buckle falling off into the rushing waters. and as if the rain weren't bad enough, ojai, 35 miles east of santa barbara was hit with a 5.1 magnitude earthquake in the middle of the storm. jason allen is in palm springs with the the latest on the storm and the quake. >> reporter: we have a little rain falling here tonight, but what you see here is a good sign in downtown palm springs. the power is on, the streets, at least here for th

fortunately, southern california has come down. we are seeing some offshore shower activity and even some thunderstorms just west of san francisco. really the moisture is just kind wrapping around us right now. so the bay area, we're sitting here on the calmer side of things with rainfall and every which direction at this point, southern california, it is calming down. all those little blue circles are seeing that areas where we do still have reports of standing water as well as a little bit of erosion having occurred after flash flooding yesterday in the last night. so today is going to be a day of cleanup for neighbors down to the south. look at some of these impressive rainfall totals, lewis ranch. that's a los angeles county up in the mountains. so around 7 inches of rain, hollywood reservoir beverly hills right around 5 inches of rain. and that's in those urban areas. so quite a lot about san jacinto. that's about palm springs where you take the aerial tramway around a foot of rainfall from hillary, the remnants of which reall

experts say there could be three inches of rain per hour across southern california tonight. the storm officially made landfall earlier today over mexico baja california peninsula it is expected to move up through southern california and into nevada over the next 24 hours. fox weather meteorologist adam klotz takes look at the forecast for us. a.d. adam. >> gave us our 5:00 update so we have brand new information coming in with still a tropical storm, and this update is right up there the 5 p.m. advisory 60 miles per hour winds so lost 5 miles per hour down to 65 miles an hour at our last -- still moving to the north at about 23 miles an hour that's very similar as you see spinning right now still just south of the mexican border. however, most of the activities happening out in front of this so folks across southern california are already really in it as they experience some pretty strong gusts at times and certainly that heavy rain. these are some of the gusts we've seen thus far, these are all higher elevations. so right around san diego, los angeles they're not seeing wind

garcia southern california folks waking up with lots of water and lots more mud over the weekend. preparation was key for hillary's intense wind and torrential rain. it stretched from baja, california in the south to the bottom of the san joaquin valley, hitting everything in between, including the deserts and la sunday cathedral city out in the desert area, declared a state of emergency. the desert city received a downpour of two inches in just a few hours, the city reported 911 lines were down overnight. cars were stranded. drivers caught off guard, ending up on the roofs of their cars, sandbagging ended up being the beach sport for the beaches and for folks just needing to prepare for the storm. they were definitely needed. public safety agencies gave warnings for folks to stay indoors off the freeways. both la unified and san diego unified, the two largest school districts in the state, asking families, keep the students at home today, on monday, as for the amounts of rain, who santa monica over 3.5in. van nuys, over 4.5in, some parts of the san gabriel mountains over five inch

and this is good news for southern california.oing to be calming down today for areas like palm springs, san diego and los angeles, which don't need to see any more rainfall at this point. tropical update does show that low pressure area. the remnants of hillary continuing to push upwards. we're going to continue to see moisture making its way up into the northern rockies and eventually up into the northern plains all as a result of all this moisture that has worked its way. california, nevada, up to the north of us today is our best chance of any unsettled weather out there in the bay area. watch for an isolated shower all the way into the afternoon today after today will be clearing out drying out and the whole state will be looking at your normally dry august forecast for turning 60's and 70's for a and at the coastline. these numbers today are going to be the coolest of the rest of the week's forecast. but with that muggy feel it's not going necessarily have a cool feel to it by any means. the south bay looking at temperatures

so people right now here in southern california are just kind of sitting and waiting. it's been comm before the storm, quite barely to here quite literally as you say, jason. some areas are expected to get a year's worth of rain full in just a few days. there's warnings of, you know, life threatening flooding. what's the impact of that going to be if it ends up as being a being as bad as predicted? so what some, sometimes people forget that california is a desert and the areas that you mentioned that are going to get a years worth of rain. that's that palm springs, that's our rule areas. our desert area, we're in a 24 hour period. they're going to see almost 10 inches of rain. so with that, all of that story, all of the top soil, all the rocks, all of the debris, that's been built up over time. those 10 inches in 24 hours. they've gotta go somewhere. so they're just basically gonna clean the top soil off of a lot of the area of southern california. and so what that will do is, you know, come down from our mountain areas and end up in our neighborhoods are in our street

it moves through this evening, bringing the brunt of hilary to southern california and parts of centralalifornia before it moves to nevada. by monday, remnants of hilary will bring us better chances of light, scattered showers. today, not too much, just an isolated shower. most of the rainfall is falling right along the track, you see some of the areas where it is purple. those are some of the heaviest rain falls we could expect, up to 10 inches in a few spots. other areas getting anywhere from one to six inches. here is what live doppler 7 looks right now, you see the yellow in los angeles right now. we could see a spotty showers in the bay area. for the most part, it is pretty dry. the flood watch in green shows the track of the storm, so we have a flood watch for the southern part of our state into nevada and even parts of oregon and idaho. the tropical storm warning near los angeles in orange. in the bay area, lots of cloud cover right now. it is still pretty dry. we will notice an increase in humidity. dew points in the upper 50's to low 60's, maggie to humid conditions today and t

there is a tropical storm over southern california as i speak. first time this has happened since back in 1939. technically there was one then. but that's the last time it happened. so since we've been able to track it and put labels on it like the national weather service does. and if the center of it is here, watch what happens as we look at it. there is an interesting pattern that will show up. we'll change our perspective. take a look at the center of the circulation right out here. that's where the wind field is spinning. and that means it is pulling out the strongest wind there on the leading edge. you can watch the progression here. let's bring the center of that circulation on. we'll go through 8:30 tonight. we're looking at gusts around 40 to 50 miles an hour. this will probably be the point when the winds will start to weaken after that. then things from a wind standpoint will get better, but the wind was never really the main concern. just an easy way to visualize how that thing will behave. the rain is the bigger issue. that's what we

california is watching as hurricane hillary fast approaches and it could reach southern california tomorrow. a tropical storm has not hit california since 1939. this is huge news. let's get to first alert meteorologist, jessica birch with where the storm is now. >> absolutely, as you said, this is huge, i will say this, that was just a tropical storm, right now this track is expected to hit california as a category one. let's take a look at what is to come. starting off with hurricane hillary, just south of baja california this afternoon, we are in a category four, that is 157-mile-per-hour wind to be a category five, so to put that into perspective, this is a very strong storm tracking its way to the north. here is the track right now, we will continue to see this develop, right now it is moving its way to the north, just around southern california, look at the colors on the map, as it moves to the north, it will start to lose energy. the warm sea service temperatures are needed to survive. that still gives it enough strength to hit los angeles, san diego area, and a category one as early

tropical storm hilary is out of southern california. it won't be forgotten anytime soon, from downed power lines to flooding, mud slides, hilary left a trail of trouble behind. nbc bay area's ian cull joins us with a closer look at the damage done. you spoke with one woman who actually rode out the storm in her home. >> laura moved from the bay area to cathedral city near palm rings about five years ago, and she lives near the entrance to her neighborhood and was recording as flooded over the past 24 hours. palm springs is one of the places hardest hit by hilary. she found one man whose suv started floating. you see it there after he drove into the flood water. at se point, the fire department couldn't get through because the water was so deep. >> it was not pretty. it was bad. the rains started flooding quickly, about mid afternoon yesterday. i have friends who sent me pictures of downed trees, and the damage has kind of been all over the place. >> she said it, damage all over the place. they're obviously going to need some help. i und

most of the central valley as well as southern california. also starting to notice the brunt of those outer bands of hurricane hilary. that is a category one hurricane right now with sustained winds at 90 miles per hour. and the national weather service has issued a special weather statement as a result for sunday through monday. we are going to notice that lot of cloud cover and with that isolated flooding possible because of that very muggy. subtropical feel a lot of instability with that severe weather that could cause isolated flooding. it depends on the storm track where exactly it makes landfall. so that will impact exactly where the flooding occurs in this year. but we are going to see temperatures 10 to 20 degrees below normal as a result due to that increase in that high cloud cover sunday through tuesday for this year. so let's take a look at futurecast work as we're tracking very active weather pattern right now by sunday morning. calm conditions. but as that plume of moisture from hurricane hilary makes its way from south to north

for the first time ever the national hurricane center is issued a tropical storm warning for southern california hilary turns off pacific coast people in california are preparing for a forecaster said could be a catastrophic and life-threatening flooding across parts of the southwest. fox weather craig herrera with the story. >> the second half of the weekend throughout southern california is going to be a whole different story compared to what we have been dealing with going into the weekend. in fact the rain will pick up they will be doing some prep's around here. they've been loading some sandbags. trying to get people ready to go saying hey this is the time to fill your car with gas. this is the time to power your packs all your energy batteries you need your cell phone, your computers, any medications, food, water, just be prepared for any type of outages including power outages. preparations have been underway underweight with her also saying please avoid the beach areas. we know how great the beaches are across southern california but it is going to be rough as far as swells. large swells

we've only seen it a handful of times in california, it may make a second landfall in southern california by monday as a tropical depression, winds at 35 miles per hour. then we'd see the path go up central california with the remnant moisture. rainfall totals, no. southern california the highest rain, that flooding potential. look at these numbers down in southern california. looking at 2-4 inches. maybe higher in the mountains. notice the heavy rain line. it cuts right here through central california. lake tahoe and the mountains also in on this. we're super close. i have to tell you, all my experience covering hurricanes in the of the pa, these things can wobble, they can move. if this took a little jog off to the west, we would also be talking about heavy rainfall for us. right now we're looking at scattered rain and thunderstorm chances, but the heaviest would be to the east and south of us the way things are looking right now. we've got more looks at this, plus some thunderstorm action in the bay area. i've got details in about eight minutes. >> fascinating stuff, thanks, jeff. you

saturday afternoon some rain starts to form in southern california. that's by the time that people really start to think about hunkering down. at times strong wind gusts and the potential for some flooding. maybe give your loved ones a call that live in southern california. what does it mean as it continues to push on through land, it will start to weaken but remnants could be felt in the bay area, too. monday possibly some sprinkles over the south bay, the east bay and the north bay, tahoe also going to see the remnants of the storm. various traces of rain for us here. through death valley, 5, 6, 7 inches of rain possible in a very short amount of time. going to zoom it in, possibly the green spots a half an inch of rain or less. we'll continue watching this as it becomes closer, as the event develops over california. i'll leave with you the seven-day forecast in san francisco. not going to rule out that chance of rain for our inland valleys, either. we'll continue with the temperatures still in the 90s, feeling muggy, tracking all of that moisture a
