something special happening at stanford again. this time stanford hospital area. brain implants and a.i. are helping als patients speak again. the disease, also known as lou gehrig's disease, impacts the muscles, including those that help us form words. pat bennett was diagnosed with als in 2012. since then, she's lost the use of her lips, her tongue, and jaw. she can still make sounds but can no longer form words or sentences. so last year, bennett underwent surgery. researchers put four sensors in her brain. then they trained a computer program to pick up her brain waves. that program uses a. uae to help translate those brain waves into what bennett is saying in real time. here's a clip of how it works. >> pretty remarkable. this is part of a clinical trial happening right now at stanford. we talked to dr. jamie henderson, the lead investigator of the trial. >> people with communication disorders can often become somewhat isolated. it's very difficult and painstaking to have a conversation with somebody who can only communicate at maybe 5 or 10 words per minute.

the latest on the four teams looking for a new home, including stanford and cal. >>> the new report on the san jose fire truck outside of the pink poodle strip club. it details why the fire crew went there in the first place, who ordered the visit, and where the firefighters went after. damian trujillo broke the story back in october. he joins us now with some answers. damian, what are you learning? >> reporter: well, audrey, this is a report that the city tried to keep secret from the public. but ultimately released it after a judge's order this week. we do know that during the investigation, the captain admitted that an employee at the pink poodle, a male employee, had taken pictures of the fire crew. so they were going to the pink poodle to retrieve some of those pictures if not the card containing those pictures. while there, the firefighters are telling investigators that this woman, bikini-clad woman, demanded that she be taken on a ride-along. so they conceded. they took her around the block a couple of times. then after that, they were -- the fire truck per gps data we obtained

david: you grew up on the stanford campus. i assume you were an all-a student.r sisters all a's. so, where did you want to go to college? anne: my father went to harvard. the reality is, you know things based on your parents. and my father was really lucky. he went to harvard after he came from poland. he was in school and he went early to harvard. my mom went to berkeley. so, i knew -- my parents always encouraged me. they would say, it is important to go. it's important to have education. it is important to go to a good school, but there is a lot of good schools. and i would say today people over-emphasize exactly what school i have to go to. there's so many great schools, and, frankly, the great school finds you. i thought harvard would be fascinating. my oldest sister, she went to harvard. i used to stay with her at harvard. i was fascinated by people who wore tweed and had leather patches. so, i decided to not end up going to harvard. i went to yale for one weekend and i fell in love with yale. and i am a yalie. i just loved it. >>> right now on the afternoon edition, berkeley and stanford's football teams are trying to find a new home. thank you for joining us. i'm ryan yamamoto. happening now, a meeting of the uc regents as stanford and cal are trying to jump off a sinking ship that once was the pac-12 conference. they currently make up half of what is left in the conference of champions but they are now looking to join the acc . the potential move would leave just washington state and oregon state in limbo what remains of the pac-12. these moves would take effect for the 2024 season. already, usc, ucla, oregon, washington are joining the big ten. that would bring the total number of schools in the conference to 18. meanwhile, arizona state, arizona, utah and colorado , they will join the big 12 and that will bring the total number of teams in that conference up to 16. we hit berkeley's campus to find out what students are thinking about the potential moves. >> that would really suck. i did not know that the pac-12 might go away. i feel like i grew up always hearing about pac-12, the tournaments and all of th
