bob redell is live for us with an update from caltrans. is the road going to reopen for tomorrow's post-labor day commute? >> reporter: according to caltrans, yes, it is. good morning to you, kris. i did speak with caltrans a couple of hours ago, and they tell us that westbound 80 that is shut down right now at 780 and vallejo to carquinez behind me to highway 4 in hercules will reopen at 5:00 tuesday morning in time for workers trying to get back to sf for their jobs after this long labor day holiday weekend. this is new video this morning of the roughly three-mile stretch of westbound 80 that was shut down. workers right now, they're waiting for the concrete to finish curing, but you can see the concrete is poured, and then they will restripe the roads. thursday night workers took out the old road all the way down to the dirt, according to caltrans, and installed new rebar, concrete, and asphalt. caltrans says this facelift will add 40 years to the life span of this stretch of westbound 80. the state chose to shut down the road over labo

caltrans spokesman pedro quintana escorted us along the three mile stretch of i-80 westbound between vallejo and hercules. that was shut down thursday night. by friday afternoon, crews had already demolished one of the lanes and were putting in rebar to reinforce the road. then a long line of cement trucks lined up to pour the new concrete surface so it can cure during the holiday weekend. we actually are ahead of schedule right now, but the closure and detours were difficult for drivers. traffic was bumper to bumper. it was crazy. it was backed all the way up past american canyon. my normal friday 20 minute commute took me almost an hour and 40 minutes this morning. the detour is are also deadly for friday night. business at the dead fish , a landmark restaurant on the westbound side, exit of i-80. normally about about 6:00, we would have a line, you know, out the door. we'd have at least about 400 reservations. we. have 153 reservations. the general manager, peter demarest, said he had to call employees and tell them not to come in and cancellation calls are coming in for the rest

it's one of caltrans biggest repaving projects. let's give you a live look now at san francisco international airport. you can see a lot of clouds there, and that is leading to some delays. according to the website flightaware, there are an average of about 27 minute delays for incoming flights to sfo because of low clouds in the area. there are seven flights that have been canceled out of this airport so far in the last 24 hours. the faa predicts today and monday will be the busiest travel days of the long holiday weekend at oakland international airport is expecting 210,000 travelers to pass through. sfo expects 590,000 people flying in and out of that airport. so if you have a flight this weekend, give yourself some extra time and plan accordingly. meanwhile some us airlines are taking steps to make their upscale airport lounges a little less crowded. they're now limiting the amount of time air travelers can spend in those lounges while waiting for their flight. the airlines are also reducing the number of travelers that can be

caltrans says they want to thank everyone. they really appreciate everyone's patience and their understand. reading from the drivers to the business owners to the cities that were impacted, they estimate that this new paving job will last for another 40 years. they say that they are also able to get some of the lights replaced on the carquinas bridge that had been out for years. that was another thing, along with some landscaping along the sides of the road. so this was a really big project. they were able to do it safely with no injuries, and they said that they're just really glad that they were able to do it before the commute picks up again tomorrow on tuesday, reporting from vallejo at the carquinez bridge, jana katsuyama ktvu fox two news. yeah, the final phase of that project now in the books. well, labor day weekend is coming to a close with a lot of people heading back home. travelers are seeing fewer flight disruptions compared to this time earlier compared rather, to earlier in the year. according to flightaware, le

this is one of caltrans biggest maintenance closures ever. and that means a detour. fortunately all on freeways westbound traffic must exit at i-70 and 80in vallejo to pacheco. their catch highway four to hercules find only getting back onto westbound 80 there about ten extra miles we're going to be pouring 9000yd!t of concrete in lanes two and three. and this is going to be a continuous pour. so one long strip so a few people even know how much 9000yd!t of concrete is. allow s to show you it's enough concrete to pave almost 16 football fields, including the end zones, three inches deep. if you were to pour all that wet concrete into big rig gasoline tanker trucks, it would fill 202 of them closer to home. you could completely chock full pack just over. 1 million refrigerators, cars, but hassle wise, over the long haul, the total seven days of closure for east and west bound lanes was worth it. the way this project was designed, it was 106 nights of nighttime work that all of this work would have taken the funding all comes from state senate bill one, the gas tax, wh

but to get there, caltrans has shut down a key part of south bay highway. right now, crews are working to repave five miles of north bound 87 in san jose. as marianne favro tells us, this is creating some bumps. >> reporter: crews are working around the clock to rehabilitate north bound highway 87 in san jose. they are grinding up the old asphalt and pumping it into this truck and it's being hauled off. crews removed 300 tons of old asphalt an hour. but to complete this section of the $60 million project, caltrans had to shut down this five-mile stretch of north bound highway 87 from julian street to highway 85 all weekend. and that's making it harder for customers to get to this grill on kurtner avenue. >> it's horrible. >> reporter: she says business tonight is down 50% compared to most saturdays. >> right now, we will be so busy, like running around. this is almost nothing. it would be so crazy right now if the highway was open. >> reporter: she says the closure didn't just impact customers. >> employees were late. >> reporter: she says some employees we

caltrans expecting to reopen them tuesday morning. but those returning to the bay area today will face a detour around the roadwork kron. 4 charles clifford has an update on that work being done. charles? yeah. >> caltrans says that they are on schedule to reopen westbound tomorrow morning. however, we are starting to see some backup on the detour which goes through benicia and that could get worse as we head into the evening hours. westbound lanes of interstate 80 between 7.80, in vallejo on highway 4 in hercules were closed down last thursday evening on friday, caltrans tore up several miles of the westbound lanes. and then over the weekend they poured fresh concrete. and now on monday, they are waiting for that concrete to harden. last night our crews were able to finish that last concrete pour. >> so now we're playing the waiting game tonight. concrete. here. get our strikers and a stripe. the newly repaved weston corridor between 0, 4, incoming skyway, that 3 mile stretch. and so, yeah, he's right now as we're on schedule reopen

caltrans has closed all westbound lanes of interstate 80 between vallejo and hercules for a repaving project. this is video taken within the last hour showing the work that is already underway. the lanes will reopen on tuesday as ktvu's jana katsuyama shows us officials want to make sure travelers are aware of this closure. the stream of traffic on i-80 had some bay area drivers getting out of town or getting fueled up for those labor day weekend road trips. we're going up to lake berryessa and we're going to have a little barbecue up there. but there are some new challenges this year with the closure of i-80 westbound between vallejo and hercules. it is a little bit of an inconvenience, but that just means you got to leave a couple minutes earlier to get where you got to go, completely redoing all of the lanes on i-80 from crockett out to hercules. caltrans says the highway will be closed through tuesday morning with cars being diverted to the benicia bridge. sfo has posted alerts on the airport website. we want to make sure that people see that information and especially people tha

caltrans spokesman pedro quintana escorted us along the three mile stretch of i-80 westbound between vallejo and hercules. that was shut down thursday night. by friday afternoon, crews had already demolished one of the lanes and were putting in rebar to reinforce the road. then a long line of cement trucks lined up to pour the new concrete surface so it can cure during the holiday weekend. we actually are ahead of schedule right now, but the closure and detours were difficult for drivers. it was backed all the way up past american canyon. so my normal friday, 20 minute commute took me almost an hour and 40 minutes this morning. the detours are also deadly for friday night. business at the dead fish, a landmark restaurant on the westbound side, exit of i-80. normally, about about 6:00, we'd have at least about 400 reservations. we have 153 reservations. the general manager, peter demarest, said he had to call employees and tell them not to come in. and cancellation calls are coming in for the rest of the holiday weekend. this will be the worst weekend of the year when it's normally la
