as david culver reports from mexico where he's been following a group of migrants. >> reporter: we're in southern mexico and walking with a group of migrants. we met this group in guatemala. and they have been making the trek for about 18 days. they're originally from venezuela, a couple of families and others who have come together and gotten to know each other along the way. the reason we're walking right now with them, some of them are trying to hurry up, they're trying to go around a migration checkpoint. they were picked up on the river bank on the mexico side and taken in a van, they, of course, had to pay. and brought to just before the checkpoint. that's when they were all unloaded. you can see that's where these folks are walking behind high grass and they're finding their way to catch up with that same van but on the other side of the checkpoint. we should point out, we're able to go around it because we can choose any route we are here legally. they are not in mexico legally. they have not entered any country since leaving venezuela legally. their hope like everyone else, t

i'm david culver.e start with what is anything but a relaxing holiday weekend for tens of thousands of people at the burning manifest value in the nevada desert. they are trapped in a sea of mud out there this morning. what a mess out there. they're waiting for organizers to give the all-clear to exit the site. that is expected to happen sometime today. amid a downpour friday and saturday transformed the dry desert dirt into thick clay-like mud that traps bikes and organizers alike. organizers asked the attendees to shelter in place and shelter and food. and also plans to set fire to the iconic burning man effigy in tonight. police out there are investigating one death at the festival. a 40-year-old man but organizers say it was unrelated to the weather. despite the tough conditions, many attendees, they're keeping positive, they say they're coping with harsh conditions and that's part of the point of burning man and they came prepared. cnn's camila bernal is on the ground at burning man. >> reporter:

david culver, mexico. >>> a manhunt is underway for an alleged killer. baltimore police say 32-year-old jason dean billingsley is responsible for the murder of pavel lapair. he is featured in the 30 under 30 list. the suspect is considered armed and extremely dangerous. brian todd is in baltimore with more details. what can you tell us about the suspect? >> there's an intense manhunt going on. we are outside the apartment building where this occurred. she was reported missing on monday. monday morning. then someone went to check on her and her body was discovered later on monday according to the police with signs of blunt force trauma on the head. the suspect pleaded guilty for first degree assault in 2009. he pleaded guilty for a charge of second-degree assault in 2011 and a first-degree sex offense in 2015. he was sentenced to 30 years in prison but he got out of prison in 2022. we've been pressing officials with the police and the court systems to give us some answers on why he was released in 2022. we have not gotten those answers yet. with you in a

border official -- david culver is near mexico's southern border with guatemala tonight. what can you tell us about the video, the sheer number of people making this journey? >> reporter: what's most concerning, anderson, is you're seeing these massive crowds, which sure you've seen in the past. but they're incredibly organized now, and they seem to go in cycles. you'll see in the first video, those are the crowds you mentioned. we're seeing now this year alone -- and here we are in september -- more than 100,000 than what we saw crossing all of last year. so, the numbers are rapidly increasing. it's increasingly concerning and alarming for officials, not only in colombia, where some of this video is starting and you can then see them continuing through the jungle, which is very dangerous. but also officials in the u.s. who are watching this and knowing that those individuals are headed north. ultimately, the vast majority want to get into the u.s. now, the jungle portion in and of itself is incredibly dangerous. not only are the terrain elements of themselves treacherous

cnn's david culver is there for us, david, tell us what the situation is there?reporter: you really feel a massive surge here in southern mexico, brianna. i'm a border where most might not associate it with migrant crisis. it's indicative of what's coming north towards the u.s. in particular. at the border, as you point out, mexico, just over this riser here, guatemala. now this has become, despite the official crossing which is just a few hundred feet downriver the real crossing point. you see here, makeshift rafts there are innertubes that have planks of wood strewn across them. and this is where migrants are bought from guatemala, dropped off. they by $150 per person. they go to unload and come to the mexican side. then the shore. this is what this has become, you see the kids here. this has become a little encampment of sorts. you've got tents for those morton enough to have one. you've got clothes hanging up, fires where people are cooking and it's become an ecosystem of folks waiting out to see where they can move from here to hto cap capchula. it's not a m
