seems to do pretty well in iowa polls. vivek ramaswamy has staged over 100 events. who has the momentum in iowa right now? >> i don't know that anyone quite has yet. you mentioned two that i'm watching closely. vivek ramaswamy and tim scott. i hear a lot of people say that, you know, when you talk to iowans, a lot of republicans have not made up their minds yet but they have a list of maybe three or five candidates that they are watching. those two are on there and nikki haley often on those as well. while they haven't surged in the polls yet, but there is time for that to happen. those are three that i think are most poised do to do that. >> and with iowa, are there issues that the candidates there will focus on that are unique or different than possibly the national stage? >> i don't know necessarily. like tonight i just covered an event that was hosted by christian conservative organization, evangelical voters, a lot of talk about faith and religious liberty. and those things are important to iowa republican voters here

in the state that is going to host the first in the nation iowa caucuses. she also signed a six week abortion ban this summer. he called it terrible. >> amy, you mentioned the pivot the former president is making from the primary to the general. is there a risk doing that too early? >> he does not seem. to. be worried. what i thought was interesting, i was just reading reports what was going on at the conference this weekend, there was one woman there who they interviewed who summed up how this issue plays with a lot of republican voters who defined themselves as pro-life, who have told posters i support a complete ban, but when you ask them what do you think that really means, they kind of sound less certain. she said yes, abortion is my number one issue. the reporter said how about a federal ban? she said i don't know, i could go either way on that. i have heard focus groups, 2022, of republicans who said i consider myself pro-life but we should have exceptions. the issue is may be more muddled. donald trump is confident enough in that and his lead that e

[laughter] rachel: there's something very authentic, because you know he doesn't flip burgers often -- [laughter] and he's still got that suit on. we were talking this morning about the fact that he went into this frat house, right, and that, you know, he might be the only candidate out there that would get that kind of reception in a fraternity house, you know? if young people, you know generally don't really care about politicians coming in to see them, and yet these guys were enthused and excited. why is that? explain this phenomenon. >> because he connects to people that most washington politicians simply cannot if connect to because they're a wholly-owned subsidiary of the donor class. they take their orders from the donor class and from the lobbyists and the people who really run government from behind the scenes. and donald trump, the reason they hate him so much, the reason the deep state has

iowa's job, most of the people that win the iowa caucuses haven't gone on to become the nominee. that you could essentially have a one-on-one race against donald trump going into south carolina, and then on into super tuesday when all of those delegates are available. so the job here is to figure out, okay, who's got the hot hand, who's got momentum, and now that we're in the most labor day phase, all of these campaigns are under a lot of pressure to perform. i see we had ron desantis announce a bunch of evangelical leaders this week, and i think he's well on his way to find 99 county evangelical chairs, which is kind of a big deal. that's what he'll be messaging this week. there's time for this to happen. you better have your best campaign going right now. hitting on all cylinders and, if someone gets close in iowa, and the rest of the field starts to fall away after new hampshire, and during that 40-day period to south carolina, you could end up with a one-on-one race, which i think is what donald trump fears the most. >> and maybe there's another reason for an opening there. n

[applause] welcome we are glad to have you here tonight. >> delighted to be here. we've been talking a lot tonight about family values and the importance of family. what would you do as president to strengthen families in this country aside from may be tax policy what are some things you could do to strengthen the family unit? >> let's let everyone understand that it all starts with the fact that when you have a family unit, your probability of having a successful happy child increases by over 100%. when you have a two parent household, the impact is so stratospheric that you cannot believe it. now i'm a statistician and you look at the numbers, it starts by encouraging this. you realize we've lost our way. and when i say we've lost our way, many of you have a book and we talk about how we are throwing our money away and going broke but what does that mean? we've destroyed the whole fabric of america. we have

we'll come up with a number. >> cnn's jeff zeleny is in iowa.ith evangelical, particularly that very important voting group where you are in iowa? >> reporter: dana, it is a very important voting group. in fact, the rival candidates have been spending the week here wooing those evangelical voters. there was a major event in des moines where more than 1,000 were listening to the evangelicals speak. the former president wasn't there. there is some that would like to see a prag matic approach to this. with abortion being front and center. we did sit down with a pastor in des moines, he has had this discussion with the president before about his views. listen to what he said? >> why would you say something like a heartbeat bill is too strict. why would you say that? that's given me questions, i don't understand it, help me figure it out. his answer to me wasn't the bust to be blunt with you. >> reporter: what was it? >> his answer was we're now in a better position to negotiate a better place. >> reporter: so this is one of the central issues that w
