it's been a pretty close race at the moment between adam schiff and katie porter, both members of the house, barbara lee trailing. it's still very early and fluid. so that goes on. but you're right, the big story, and we don't want to step on a terrible tragedy like this, but the fact is that there will be an appointment, and the appointment will be made by governor newsom. now, the same process as if she resigned. he will appoint somebody, and we all know by now, that he will appoint a black female. he's not going to appoint barbara lee, who of course is a black female, because he says she's running the race, he doesn't want to tilt it. so the question is who. and if you think about it, the list has to be very small. why would the list be small? most people, you would think, would be black elected women, and very few of them are in positions where they want to give up the power they have for a position of, perhaps, lasting 18 months, because he wants a caretaker, someone who will promise to not run once that person is elected. you get down to a very small number of people. some of th

katy porter, schiff, barbara lee. a republican hasn't won since pete wilson in 1998. porter has been in the house since 2019, quite new, very well-known for the props she brings to the chamber to illustrate a point. she once filled her minivan with rice to show how many acres of federal land oil companies were leasing. each grain respected an acre. barbara lee has been in congress the longest. there's adam schiff as well. he's been on the house intelligence committee. he is a longtime california congressman and best known probably to people around the united states as the head of donald trump's impeachment. and then barbara lee, i mentioned her earlier, in congress the longest, 98. famously the only person to vote against the iraq war, saying no to the authorization of use of military force. she got a lot of pushback at the time. i think modern-day leaders would come to realize she was probably right. again, these are candidates you'll probably see in 2024 on the ballot. that winner serves four years, a regular senator. we're waiting on the governor's interim appointm
