after world war ii, maritime studies sort of fell out of fashion. there has always been a hard core of people very interested in a. the munson institute is testament to the ongoing interest in maritime studies, but on a much broader scale, the great majority of historians for maybe social stories of people who turn their attention to the underground railroad, don't have the founding or professional historical sensitivities to the importance and the significance of maritime documentation. they did not focus their attention on that. they possibly would not have used maritime archives in the way we were able to use them. and so, i think it has to do a lot with the training of historians and how, as with anything, there are fashions. there are fashions in historical studies. the maritime dimension of things has really not been a major focus over the last 40 or 50 years. but i think we can change that. i really want one of the accomplishments of this book, i hope, is that we will begin to change the way people think about how the underground railroad ope
