cnn's brian todd is on the scene for us, as is shimon prokupecz. let's go to brian. let's start off with you. explain what you have been seeing for those who are just joining us and what assets that you can say are on the ground. >> well, anderson, for the more than past hour, we have been here while kind of this influx of law enforcement just kind of poured into this area right in front of the house, right in front. they had been here earlier, then they had left. and then about an hour ago, they poured several vehicles and personnel and air assets back here, and basically set up camp in front of the house with a loudspeaker and a spotlight. and you can see the spotlight now kind of shifting around, either at, rite on the house or just around it. they could also be using the spotlight we believe to check areas on the sides of the house, because that seems to be what they have done. actually, there was very continuous dialogue. it was a one-way dialogue, but it was a law enforcement officer on a bullhorn while the spotlight was trained on the front of the house saying

i'm joined now by cnn's brian todd, who is in bowdoin, maine., you have been watching this all play out tonight. what do we know about where police are focusing their efforts and how that changes now that it's dark outside? >> well, kaitlan, what i can tell you is in the last few minutes a law enforcement officer came up to this position here and advised us basically this is no longer a scene, indicating that law enforcement has extracted itself from the scene. we witnessed that. we witnessed several vehicles leaving here a short time ago. it is complete darkness at the home of robert card. but we can tell you that for the last two and a half to three hours, it was a scene. they had converged with pretty, you know, i would say -- i would say some serious force to the house. a lot of law enforcement vehicles, personnel, air assets, k-9 teams. they had fanned out actually in a field next to the house as well. they trained a spotlight on the house. they operated their drones and their spotlight to try to figure out if something or someone was insid

i want to get around to cnn's brian todd who's on the senior the suspects last known address. brian, a dramatic scene unfolding this evening at robert card's house. what did you see and hear tonight? >> well, laura, it was very dramatic and we thought for a while there that there might be a standoff going on. this occurred about 250 yards behind me where the home owned by the suspect, robert card, is located. starting at about seven pm eastern time law enforcement really just poured assets into this area, on the street came right up to the house with tactical vehicles, armored vehicles, air assets like drones and helicopters, converged upon the scene. they have several personnel on the ground, canine teams, and other technical assets. they also, we noticed them fanning out in a field, a farm field just adjacent to the house for a short period. it might have been an effort to surround the place. about that time, where we are, the media is at this position on a driveway overlooking this place, log forsman came up to us and said you guys need to shut your lights off. your camera l

our brian todd is at that address for us right now. brian, do we know any more about the bangs and where this search stands right now? >> reporter: wolf, we do know that fbi personnel approached this house a short time ago. we just got here. one of our colleagues was here. he said a short time ago, several large bangs came from the house. you can see the roof of the house only over that ridge. what scott us, is a neighbor told him that fbi percentage necessarily, as they approached the house screamed fbi, come out now, and there were large bangs. they could have been flash bangs. our josh campbell said that could be standard procedure when they approach any house. police and fbi are still at that house, and we've been pushed way back in this perimeter as the law enforcement has approached and probably entered the last known address of robert card. this as we get new information how the shooting unfolded and on the manhunt. he should be considered armed and dangerous. >> reporter: tonight a manhunt, killing 1 people, killing 13 others at

brian todd is joining us now live from this young man's hometown of rockville, maryland, where he's beingbered. what are they saying about him, brian? >> reporter: well, wolf, they're saying that it was an emotional and patriotic pull that drew him back. tonight this community at the charles east jewish smith day school is mourning the loss of omer balva who was killed on friday. we have new information tonight on the experiences of balva and others who have been drawn back to the region to serve. 22-year-old omer balva was always drawn to israel, according to his friends. they say balva who grew up in rockville, maryland, chose to serve in the israel defense forces right out of high school instead of going to college right away. balva, a dual u.s./israeli citizen, was on vacation in the u.s. when hamas attacked israel on october 7th. after being called up as a reservist, he packed and hurried back to israel. within a few days, he was dead, killed last friday by an antitank missile along israel's northern border with lebanon. >> it is really devastating for our community. he was a lovely

with me now is brian todd, to get a sense, brian, about what we know about those lives lost?> reporter: well, john, we're getting new information from medical officials in the area about the volume of patients taken to the emergency rooms and it was overwhelming. dr. john alexander, he's the chief medical officer of the central maine hospital. he said his hospital received 14 patients in the course of 40 minutes. you can imagine, that's incredible volume when you're talking gunshot wounds coming in a span of 45 minutes. this is what dr. alexander had to say about how his hospital had staffing in place to deal with that. >> we had approximately 100 team members who were off duty come to the hospital to make sure we were able to care for not only the patients we received from this horrible scene, but also take care of the patients that we have here. >> reporter: and dr. alexander said of those 14 patients that were brought in, john, eight of them are still in the hospital. three of them were in critical condition. they did have victims pass away at that hospital. just the sense

brian todd was on the scene as police surrounded the suspect's home. >> reporter: start ing at 7:00 p.m. eastern time when law enforcement assets just flooded the zone here and surrounded robert card's home behind me about 250 yards behind me with a lot of tactical vehicles, armored vehicles, drones and other things. they had a canine team here. they surrounded the house. at that point they came up to our cameras here at this position and said you have to cut your camera lights off because the camera lights are creating a danger for law enforcement. so we cut our lights off. and we filmed for the next two and half hours in complete darkness, but we got a pretty good view. at one point after we turned our lights off and they moved a tactical vehicle pretty close to the house. they moved a spotlight on to the house. at that point, they began a one-way dialogue. and we were told later on it was unknown if the suspect was in the house or not. but they began a one-way dialogue. law enforcement officer on a loud speaker was saying things like "come out with your hands out" please come out and
