jon fortt. >> coming up next, breaking pce inflation tada we will bring it to you.ing right back on this friday morning ♪ ♪ >>> all right. welcome back to "squawk box", everybody. here we go, a friday morning and we are just about an hour away from the opening bell. you can see the dow futures down by about 35 points right now s&p futures up by 10.5 the nasdaq up by 91. we saw better numbers two and a half hours ago d we have data hitting right now steve liesman is standing by with breaking inflation data steve, what can you tell us? >> personal income, 0.3%, becky, a miss on the 0.4% that was expected expenditures, a big jump there 0.7%, above the expectation of 0.5% on the important price indices, headline at 0.4% and food and energy at 0.3% that's right in line, the core people are interested in year over year the headline ticks down looks like .1 to 3.1% and the core at 3.7%. really in-line numbers, becky. there had been talk about whether or not this number would show something of a tick down below expectations because of the data yesterday or the positive core

processing units over -- i should say a shift in the pc sales to the graphic chips used in ai units jon forttght and spoke about the weakness from data center sales listen in. >> we did a bit better than we thought so our market share is a bit better importantly, is the road map and our next generation the gen 4 and ai attach rate there is ahead of schedule. >> done with the bad though. you have the data center sales, sales that fell for seven straight quarters. gross margins are 60% from two years ago and they have to deal with the china export band the ai chip launching has a lower performance than amd and nvidia's chips the value is predicated on its ability to execute its road map within ai chips but manufacturing as well. aka the foundry business wall street analysts need more convincing. >> what about at pc chip threat from amd and nvidia we were talking about last week? >> the stock is up 10% this week and dropped dramatically last week when reuters reported that nvidia and amd will be launching their cpu chips that are based on arm technology which is a direct competition to intel's t

. >> jon fortt had a terrific story yesterday about intel selling altera. specialized chips. in many ways, they are, until the a.i. chips came, the most valuable. what's interesting is they paid, in 2015, they paid $16.7 billion. the competitor, amd, bought xilinx, paid $49 billion, so in the interim between 2015 and now, it's obviously gained a lot of the industry has moved up. this is -- but fortt did point out there is a problem in that intel didn't do that much with this, so i don't know how much it's really worth versus xilinx. you do mobile-i, and you do this, and you say, wait a minute, maybe intel is worth more. that is what pat gelsinger wants. all that said, what we really want, it's like we want -- we don't want tuna with good taste, we want good taste in tuna. the rest of intel is not worth as much. you're selling the crown jewels in order to be able to finance what's not a crown jewel. that's putting money behind a hand that's not as good, and throwing away some. >> what about the argument that if they've lost on the engineering front, at least
