you know, the shooter in sandy hook, one of the worst mass shootings in our nation's history where in elementary was attacked, he he studied these mass shootings extensively. he had a spreadsheet of every mass killing going back to the 1800s with details about the shooter, the type of weapon they used, how many people they killed. and so there is a real copycat effect that started to occur after 2012. and, you know, by the time you get to the parkland school massacre, which was awful attack in florida, there's almost kind of a performative aspect to this. the shooter there, he gets in the air, he listens to a song that sort of references mass shootings. he makes youtube videos, things. he's going to be the next school shooter. and so they're all trying to copy each other this really sort of grim game. one upsmanship and that that is what has attracted these people, this gun, obviously, these people are not very rational. the choices they make are different than most other people. but for some reason they've been attracted to it. on top of that, let me just add the, gun is widely avail

katherine swiet, who is a former fbi official and ran the bureau after massacre that happened at sandy hooki'm so grateful to have both of you with me tonight. john, i want to start with you. as we're looking at the police clearly going back to what is the last known address of the suspected shooter, they were already there twice today. did they really think this was someone who would return back to his home, which is obviously a place the police are going to go after they find out who this guy is? >> it was a question they couldn't eliminate with a positive answer, which is, they weren't able to say, we can say 100% from the time of the shooting until now he hasn't been in there. so, they had to take the tactical position going in that we're going to do a dynamic entry, as if he is in there. and as soon as we clear the house, then we're going to let the search team come and execute the search warrant. the problem was that a certain piece of technology that they were using began to detect movement in the house or one of the outbuildings that caused the incident commander to say, full stop,

we're all familiar with uvalde and sandy hook elementary school. so this is a spree shooting.i am having trouble in my mind differentiating between a mass shooter, which tends to be in one location or a serial killer, who kills many but the so over long periods of time, years, sometimes. and a spree shooter. a spree shooter is a different animal, a different category for people who study these things because they keep going until they stop. it's a consistent, realtime incident that plays out continuously until the shooter is stopped so, we have to wonder, if he has stopped himself already, whether he's decided to do harm to himself or was incapacitated in some way i hold out hope, alex, that all the photographic imagery from the security cameras has helped the police. you talk to the city official recently, ask the hard question, hey, did the police have -- he gave a careful, understandable answer, but he did not say no. they had no idea. he said that this is an ongoing investigation. i am hoping that the police know who this is, that people called 9-1-1 and said i recognize t
