joining us now, msnbc military analyst, lewd tired -- stephen twitty, the israeli military announcingtoday plans have been approved to, quote, expand operational activities against hamas. what are you watching for as the world braces for unanticipated ground invasion? >> yeah, i think the conditions are set. they've had time to assemble, and that's what you've been seeing out in the field. the troops are assembled now. they also had time to gather intelligence. they had time to reverse their plans, and now it is a matter of hours, in my view, before this ground attack starts. and you will be able to understand that because the first thing that you should see happening is an increase in air power. and then you should see multiple breaches through the fence line, the border wall. and ground forces commence their attack through the border wall, where they will seize a portion of the gaza strip, clear it, they will do clearing operations -- and they will go street to street, tunnel to tunnel, building to building, ensure that they cleared those areas. and it will be a tremendous fight on

to talk more about this right now i'm joined by retired army general, steph twitty. military analysts, bobby, gauche and columnist. general 20, are you there? >> i am here. can you hear me, lindsey? >> i can. thank you for being with us, both of you. first, your reaction, general twitty, to the fact that the israeli military is reporting that there are hostages in gaza, including civilians and soldiers. that we could see a robust ground offensive. what are you watching for, general twitty? >> i am watching for a couple of things. if i could just back up a little bit and really talk about how this unfolded, in my view. you have a couple of things going on here. first of all, you have a breached border between israel and gaza. that border must be sealed quickly or you are going to get other hostages flowing back over that border. hostages into hamas and militants coming in. to also feed into the villages that are already, pretty much, seized. you can see the fighting down in the south in israel. then, the israelis have to worry about the west bank. whether or not hamas

. >> joining me is retired lieutenant general steph twitty. general twitty it's unprecedented because unlike fallujah and mosul and other places we've been, kabul, this is 300 miles of underground tunnels, hideaways, booby traps, with potentially hostages in some of those tunnels. >> this is a huge dilemma for israeli forces. you talk about the tunnels. add the tunnels, plus the streets, plus the buildings, plus the non-combatants that are going to be running around on the battlefield as well, and then top that off with fighting hamas, an extremely complicated mission that the israeli forces are getting ready to embark upon. as you know, i've spent a lot of time with the israelis. they're a tremendously professional force, and i have good confidence they'll be able to pull this mission out, but it is not without difficulty. >> you've got a carrier group, one on the way, one already there in the eastern med. that's a warning to iran. is there a scenario that when this ground offensive starts, if things go badly, that there would be air support

joining us now are to retire generals, barry mccaffrey, and steph twitty. i want to thank you for being here as we understand this. general mccaffrey, i will start with you. the idf said today that they are preparing to implement a wide range of defensive operation plans, which include, in their words, it integrated and coordinated attack for the air, sea, and land. it seems quite on the ground there right now, from richard and alison's reporting. what does the next stage look like? what are you watching for? as you're looking for that to begin. >> it's going to be a bloody mess, that's no question. hamas might have as many as 30,000 fighters. they're using the civilian population to protect themselves. they're underground, they will resist. the refugees are obviously in desperate circumstances. they're moving south out of the main combat zone. the idf has no option but to respond if they grant immunity and hamas, inside of gaza, there will never be another piece in israel. they are going to go in and try to dominate the surface level. they will go undergro

with us now to talk more about this is retired lieutenant general steve twitty. general twitty, a short time ago, the israel defense forces chief of staff posted a video on x, formerly known as twitter, where he said, quote, idf is responsible for the security of our nation and its citizens and we failed to do so on saturday morning in gaza. and we will look into it, we will investigate. but now it is time for war. what do you make of this? >> well, i think the statement is correct. the intelligence as we know, there is intelligence failure within the israeli military. and israeli administration. and so they all deal with that, i'm quite sure. i know the israelis extremely well. i trained with them. and been to israel several times. and they're all about ensuring that their intelligence apparatus works. so they'll get to that. now the larger issue at hand here is this ground operation that they are getting ready to endure. it is going to be a serious operation. it is going to be serious casualties on both sides. and as jose talked about, 2 million people. it is g
