startup companies and uc berkeley students and faculties. even new companies to push the future forward. >> about four years ago even though the opportunity has been around much longer than that. >> derek, i was looking at the price tag here. who is paying for this?>> it is a very unique financial arrangement that we have. the public money is not being used. nasa will be paying for the development., we just in the beginning process here? when would you like to break ground?>> we are breaking ground in about three years. what has to happen before that is an environmental review. that's one of the reasons it took a little bit longer in terms of the narrative process to get where we are today. we will be going through environmental review for about a year and a half or two years. once that is done, we will get the regions. >> you got some uc berkeley coming over for this. they met i think were always a little bit jealous about the valley. perhaps you want to join them there. i imagine we would absolutely welcome their side. the space program, c

more than a thousand people gathered at sprout plaza at uc berkeley to show support for the people of gaza. one of the largest gatherings in the bay area since the conflicts escalated three weeks ago. students walking out of their classes carrying signs and waving flags. many of whom were also wearing some type of mask. >> out of concern for my future and a concern for my family's well being. i don't want to be identified. >> reporter: this berkeley student asked us not to use their name saying they fear the repercussions of attending the rally. >> there is a lot of backlash coming at people that are in support of this and mischaracterization of their opinions. that mischaracterizat ion leads to people losing jobs, getting kicked out, expelled from school, having future job offers, completely wiped off the board. >> reporter: he points out the irony of the current situation given the free speech movement was started here at uc berkeley in the 1960s. yet many of the students who attended today's rally, they say they are afraid of publicly supporting palestine. pointing to numerous exam

in a joint effort between uc berkeley and nasa, the plan is to create a million feet of office space,s and classrooms. our business tech reporter, scott, joins us with the plan. who is paying for this? >> it' early. berkeley has investors, and we have the government because nasa is onboard, and they are reaching out for more. they are calling it a public/private partnership, and it's yea away from the environmental clearance, and that's plenty of time to build and raise money. >> this is part of the dna of the bay area, specifically the silicon valley in the south bay and peninsula. the space program and the silicon valley, and this could continue. >> yeah, very interesting. if you think about it, way back in the early 60s, silicon valley was birthed, the space program, looking to us, well, before us, but they were saying they needed chips and computers to help get to the moon, and all these years later the tech companies are joining hands with the space program to get the public and private partnership going. >> why not stanford? this is six or seven miles away -- >> well, the berkel
