thank you supervisor engardio for moving this legislation forward. i am not irish, but married to shawn dawn hew and have a daughter who benefited from the program at the irish cultural center as i'm the kind of mom who thinks connection with one's roots and ancestors is really important to child development, so she's grown up watching her neighbors do irish dance and countless concerts. it is also where i met mary lou the head of [indiscernible] and lots of other things that are important to the community cultural, political, social, so it is a really important place. i'm grateful the work of the board of directors and particularly liam ready who has done so much work to insure this happens and it is a place of significance that serves the needs of the community for the next hundred years. the irish community is very important to the west side, to districts 4 and 7 and the rest of the city, so i am very proud to support this. i would like to be added as a cosponsor and like to make a motion we adopt the amendments as read by you supervisor engardio

supervisor engardio. supervisor safai. thank you, chair. thank you. supervisor engardio. i just want to add on a couple of things from my own perspective of i'm very happy to be a part of this effort to bring algebra back to the middle schools. about 25 years ago, i was a tutor with an organization called the algebra project, and the whole focus of the algebra project was to go into our middle schools, work with children that had been historically tracked out of the proper college level math track. it was a civil rights math literacy organization. in focusing predominantly on african-american and latino students. and it had wonderful success. and it was a program that i think has been modeled around the country in many cities. chicago jacksonville, mississippi, new york, boston, cambridge and florida, and actually here in san francisco. for a time, it was in martin luther king middle school. we need programs like that. we need more opportunities to expand algebra for all students. and i think we can do it in very creative ways. a lot of that success begins even before eig
