gary grumbach is in virginia with the issue led to a blue wave in the state house, and steve kornacki is here to take a deeper dive into all of this. let's go to priscilla first in ohio where voters cast ballots to protect abortion access, in even districts where biden lost in 2020. so how are abortion rights supporters reacting to this sweeping victory today, priscilla? >> reporter: yeah, ana, i was in that room with abortion access supporters as that news came out, and it was -- it erupted in cheers. there were a lot of hugs, a lot of tears. these were the folks who had been organizing on the ground in ohio for months. they spent yesterday knocking doors up until polls closed, and i want to play some of the conversations and the reactions that i heard from them last night. >> just so ecstatic and so happy for every ohioan who has freedom over their own body now. it's just months and months of hard work, relief, deep relief. >> i think this is a resounding message that when you put abortion on the ballot, it wins. >> reporter: and the other message i heard from them is that they are

i want to bring in nbc's gary grum grumbach, what more do we know about what happened? >> reporter: protest organizers vehemently deny the idea that anybody was trying to get into the dnc building last night. they say they were holding a peaceful vigil with about 200 people. they were locking arms. they were singing. they were chanting. calling for a cease fire in gaza when they say police came and took some serious force and they say attacked them. they did know that the democratic leader hakeem jeffries was inside the building with a number of democratic members and democratic candidates, and all that's left here behind me now are bike racks that block the entrance to the dnc, and dozens of these plastic candles that were used as part of the vigil. the damage has really been done. as you mentioned, 90 protesters say they've been injured, six police officers, capitol police have been injured. one of the protesters was arrested for assaulting a female officer. chris. >> gary grumbach, thank you for the update, much appreciated. >>> we have breaking news out of californi

coverage this hour, nbc news correspondent priscilla thompson in columbus, ohio, nbc news reporter gary grumbach in richmond, virginia, and steve kornacki at the big board. so, priscilla, what are voters saying there about how a red state like ohio was able to pass this abortion amendment in a very clear manner? >> reporter: yeah, jose, well, it may have had something to do with the way this amendment was written. while it does enshrine the right to an abortion in the state constitution, it also allows for the state to place limits on access to abortions after the point of fetal viability. so around 22 to 24 weeks. and as for how voters here are reacting, those who were in favor of this amendment are overjoyed. we were in the room at a watch party last night as this decision came out. and the crowd erupted in cheers. i want to play some of the conversations we had with folks right after that decision was announced. >> it is unlike any other feeling i have ever felt, just overwhelmed with joy for democracy and for freedom of people. >> politicians need to understand and hear that we are going to
