good morning, today is sunday, december 3rd, i'm max darrow.t off with the war between israel and hamas, today israel is ordering people in more areas of southern gaza to evacuate, especially in the city of the second largest city in gaza. this comes as the israel military pushes farther into the south where many hamas leaders are hiding. israeli air strikes hit overnight. many of gaza's 2.3 million residents are already crammed into the southern part of gaza after israeli forces ordered civilians to leave the north in the early days of the war. israel's prime minister is vowing to achieve total victory. but the death toll in gaza continues to grow. topping 15,000 according to officials in the hamas run health ministry. bradley blackburn joins us this morning with the latest developments. good morning, another day where there is a dynamic situation in the middle east. >> reporter: ever-changing, and yes, israel is ordering more palestinians to evacuate from areas in the south where they had been told to go for safety in the past. israel says it

i am max darrow. it is not been today since an oakland police officer was shot and killed, trying to stop a burglary. the should remains on the loose. this morning we are also learning more about the cannabis business that was broken into friday morning. that is where officer tuan le was killed as he tried to stop a group of burglars. like outside of oakland police headquarters are lowered to half staff. inside, members of the community dropped off flowers and cards at the lobby. other tributes continued to pour in for people in the open community, mourning the loss of officer le. da lin has the latest from oakland. >> reporter: supporters held a candlelight vigil on saturday night at the site where officer le was shot. dozens of people attended the private event, including the officer's family, friends and fellow officers. they did not one cameras around during the event, but even before the vigil, well-wishers stopped by to pay their respects. a neighbor dropped off apples, a candy cane and flowers

i am max darrow. lots of shoppers headed to san francisco's union square for the last full day of shopping before christmas. it was a busy saturday in union square. shoppers picked up their last-minute holiday gifts and enjoyed some of the holiday festivities and find on display in union square. which is exactly why demonstrators pick a location for their no christmas as usual protest against the war in gaza. hundreds marched from market street to union square where they surrounded the ice rink and the christmas tree. they were met by a big police presence. san francisco office of emergency management send out an alert around 4:00 in the afternoon urging people to avoid the area. betty yu was down when the dust settled to see how the demonstrations affected the holiday activity. >> reporter: on the saturday before christmas, the holiday glow that usually lights up union square was missing. wrecked ornaments lay on the ground and officers investigated the broken tree, after pro-palestinian protesters c

i am max darrow. we start this half hour with an update on the war in gaza.ust from some of its own people but from european allies, as well. this comes after the israel defense forces killed three israeli hostages by mistake. gaza is in its fourth straight day of a communications blackout. the longest of several outages during the current conflict . rescue groups say this is making it harder to get aid into the territory and to keep track of the death toll. so far israel is signaling it is not changing the course of its offensive against hamas. cbs news correspondent wendy gillette has the latest on the war. >> reporter: thousands gathered in tel aviv , calling for the remaining hostages to be brought home safely. >> to make sure that all the kidnapped are returned, as soon as possible. >> reporter: they gathered at the news that another hostage was killed. more details were released about israeli forces mistakingly killing three hostages, who were waving a makeshift white flag when they were shot friday. >> i have never trusted this government and now it is

i am max darrow.s police chief is defending his decision to leave a shooting suspect alone in his home for 18 hours. the suspect is a former pittsburg police officer. john ramos has the story. >> reporter: the man in the house behind me had shot his wife and ended up shooting multiple rounds at a police s.w.a.t. team. so neighbors are wondering, how the police could consider him to not be a threat to the public. on saturday morning there were lots of police at the home on cleopatra drive. just like there were on thursday at 7:00 p.m., after a woman had been shot by her husband when she tried to enter the back door of the house . her injuries were minor, but police cordoned off the area and tried to get the man, a former pittsburg police officer named chunliam saechao to come out. he had been posting videos to social media wearing a flacco mess and holding an assault rifle in the message, anyone trying to break into my home is going to be killed and i will have no remorse because i did a good thing to

i'm max darrow.aza rages on, israelis this morning are grieving the death of three hostages who were shot and killed after idf soldiers misidentified them as threats. it happened in the city of shejiya which has been the site of fierce fighting over the last week. the idf says it is taking lesson from this accident and is transmitting them to soldiers in the field. the u.s. is urging israeli leaders to wind down the heavy offensive against hamas. cbs news correspondent wendy gillette has the latest details from new york. >> reporter: israel's military released this video of airstrikes in lebanon against alleged hezbollah targets as the war continues. max darrow joins us from the newsroom. >> california drivers and pedestrians will see changes in the new year, i had a conversation with officer andrew barclay of the highway patrol about several new safety laws that will be on the books for 2024. we will start with 645, this establishes a five-year pilot program for san jose, oakland and san francisco as well as los angeles, glendale and long beach to install a limited number of automatic speed cameras. they will take photos of the speeding cars license plates and the registered owner will get a ticket in the mail. these cameras will not be installed in areas where the chp has primary jurisdiction and they won't just appear on january 1st. >> the agency that puts these cameras in will have to notify the public of where they are going to be put in and when. >> with 413 taking effect, you won't be able to park this close to a crosswalk. >> what you are seeing right there would not be allowed. >> this prohibits people from parking cars within 20 feet of either side of a crosswalk. motorized scooters and bicycles will still be able to,

max darrow has the changes coming for the people of california. >> reporter: from laws impacting publicre to housing and more, california will see plenty of new laws on the books once we enter 2024. that includes numerous ones surrounding employment and the work place. starting on january 1st, it will be unlawful for most employers to discriminate against employees or job applicants based upon their use of cannabis away from the work place or off the job. exceptions include those that work in building and construction trades as well as federal workers. sb616 increases the amount of paid sick days employers are required to provide employees. they must provide five sick days per year. previously employers were only required to give three. on january 1st, statewide minimum wage goes up to $16 an hour. in april, it will raise the minimum wage for fast food workers to $20 an hour. in june, sb525 takes effect, which will begin the process of scaling up the minimum wage for health care workers to $25 an hour by 2033. in the public safety arena, sb673 goes into effect establishing an ebony aler

and he told max darrow it is hurting his business. >> reporter: within these walls, there is a schoolman's best friend is how he makes a living. he points out the examples of those who don't respect those rules and at times, the unspoken rule of the common courtesy. >> there is my gate that he's running over. that's an everyday thing right there. >> reporter: it is frustrating to him and his neighbors. it's run by cloud kitchens. that's why there are so many cars here, but they are not customers, many are waiting for their orders. spend a few minutes there and you'll see them in the road, boxing cars in, close misses, and constantly blocking driveways like his. my client has every right to park in my spot and they can't. time and time again, i ask them nicely, please don't block my driveway. i've had to call police on multiple occasions. we reached out to see if they would talk, but they haven't called back. you make enough money, you can hire somebody to come out here and make sure these cars are parked properly. that they are moving properly. >> reporter: on top of that, he says it

they say it's about preserving the area's character, but as max darrow tells us, some feel like it couldok for cities trying to avoid pulling their weight. >> reporter: as laurie heater walks through san mateo's baywood neighborhood, the place she's called home for decades -- >> yet it still maintains the 1927/1930s character. >> reporter: she admires the feel of the old neighborhood and she says preserving it is a top priority. >> this area's been in tact for almost 100 years, and then all of a sudden in the last year four homes have been demolished. and new homes built that are not at all in keeping with the neighborhood. >> reporter: she's the president of the san mateo heritage alliance, and she and a group of neighbors filed an application to the state's historical resources commission to have the baywood neighborhood designated as historic. >> so much has been torn down for progress. this is just, you know, 2% of the city that we'd like to keep. >> reporter: but on a walk through the neighborhood, you can't miss these bright yellow signs, and there are a lot of them. not everybody

tonight our max darrow talks to a major south bay food bank struggling for support this holiday season. >>> volunteers and staff members of second harvest of silicon valley have gone nonstop this holiday season, doing their part to make sure bay area families don't go hungry. tracy weatherby is the food bank's vp of strategy and advocacy. >> we here at second harvest of silicon valley are serving a half million people every month, which is one in six people in santa clara and san mateo counties. >> reporter: the need has grown this year, primarily due to the high cost of living, says leslie, the food bank's ceo. >> people weren't sure they were able to pay bills the next month. 60% of people have less than $100 in savings. we have so many people, especially in low wage jobs, struggling to feed their families. >> reporter: as the need has grown, financial support hasn't kept up with it. there's a goal you have, correct? >> that's right, we have to raise $15 million by december 31st, and just like you said earlier, unfortunately this year we are receiving fewer donations than we were las

max darrow reports on runways and the work to keep them up and running for the future. >> reporter: dayff and touch down at the san francisco international airport. the runways send planes off or welcome them to the bay area. but according to researchers oluwaseyi dasho and manoochehr shirzaei of virginia tech, those runways are sinking. >> so if you don't want to imply that there is a danger, that they have to be concerned. but this is just a warning for a future. and that future is not that far. >> reporter: they'll present their findings this week at the agu '23 conference put on by the american geophysical union. dasho and his team spent about seven years surveying infrastructure of 15 coastal u.s. airports, using satellite imagery to measure surface elevation. they found the runways at sfo are sinking at a rate of around 10 millimeters a year or about 0.4. >> san francisco international airport is prone to actually have the highest subsidence -- of the -- airports that we considered. >> reporter: but he says it isn't happening all at once in an equal manner. it's differential subsi
