holiday weekend, waves have been crashing the last day or so with some wave heights in the san francisco bay area up to 28 feet and they could be even higher on statue. the weather service calling this event exceptional. rip currents are extreme and dangerous. we have this potent storm that is heading toward the west coast and packing a punch with intense winds over the ocean. and that is spinning up the waves. and you can see that here. look at these winds that are really just kicking over the ocean. and that is kicking some of the ocean heights. sunday, the waves and winds start to die down a little bit. but again, what is happening is we've gotten strong winds that is moving around the water creating some of those waves, plus an ocean current doing that as well. so sometimes you get the waves to kind of crash and collide and it could create a rogue wave, and that winds up being two times or more bigger than all the other waves around it and it can be very unpredictable to kind of know when the waves will peak like that. they can be very dangerous. wave heights in general, around 20 feet, aroun

san francisco and from the east bay and marin. in san francisco, i'm sergio quintana, nbc bay area news. >> well, that's some good news. >>> let's findt exactly from our vianey arana about our new year's eve's forecast and those fireworks. >> it certainly is. the fireworks when it comes to fog and cloud cover in san francisco, always a valid concern. i do have some good news. this line of showers is not going to impact us necessarily into sunday. it is impacting us right now. for those folks heading out on the roads, please be mindful those heavy pockets will continue. let's go through that hour-by-hour forecast so i can take you to your new year's eve forecast as well. notice those pockets remain pretty heavy into the early morning hours, though it does become more scattered. this is going to be right around 3:00 a.m. overnight into tomorrow, by about 9:30, 10:00, still got some scattered activity through there. then if you notice, i took this time stamp forward to about 1:30 p.m. on sunday. you're going to be doing anything out and about sunday, expect to see some cloud cover along with the possibility still for some scattered show

systems one after the other just bringing some relatively uniform air here across the bay area. 59 in downtown san franciscoup to the north bay, 60 in santa rosa. 61 here in napa. let's move it into this weekend forecast. we've been telling you there would be heavy rain in the pacific northwest. still looks like that's on track. and we have dry high pressure to the south. we're sandwiched in between that and that's why i do see some on and off spotty rain chances also into saturday and sunday. nothing big but may get just a little bit of a spotty shower again cropping up for us. really over the next ten days just not impressive. look at this. trace amounts to 0.25 an inch for us in that blue color. eureka, that's better there. one plus inches. look at the pacific northwest in that gray color, 5 to 12 inches of rain there the next ten days. flooding conditions will be possible. keeping a close eye again on that rain line. we see it move anywhere near us, of course, we'll have those updates. temperatures all in all looking pretty good this weekend. 62 on saturday. 64 on sunday. so time to get the tree decorat
