our environment correspondent jonah fisher has the report.rd—upon—avon, the water just flowed. elsewhere — this was bewdley — flood defences held it back. one man went as far as building flood walls all around his house and, incredibly, resisted the rising water. but with climate change set to bring wetter winters and more intense rain, the question of what to defend and who should pay for it is ever more pressing. four years ago, flood defences were one of the big spending announcements of rishi sunak�*s first budget as chancellor. to protect people and over 300,000 properties, i'm doubling our investment in flood defences over the next six years to £5.2 billion. so how has it gone? well, prime minister sunak was in oxford last week, looking at some of the city's flood defences. he was all smiles, but the verdict of the public accounts committee is not so rosy. instead of the 300,000 properties chancellor sunak promised to defend, only 200,000 now seem likely to be protected by 2027. and the report says a lack of funds to maintain existing d

happening at the slimbridge wetland centre, in gloucestershire, as our environment correspondent jonah fisherswan. the bewick�*s swans are really unique because they're literally recognisable by their faces, a bit like us. smaller than mute swans, the yellow and black beak pattern of each bewick�*s is distinct, enabling researchers to recognise them year after year. george ii. the swans arrive from the russian arctic each autumn and are counted every day. names are given to individuals. they definitely have distinct personalities. and there are swan family dynasties. the most famous is the gambling dynasty. we've also had the tea party as well, teapot and teabag. the cheese dynasty was quite a big one. roquefort, cheddar and stilton. probably best to think of them as mafias rather than families. this year, 91 bewick�*s swans have been seen at slimbridge. in the 19705, there was sometimes more than 600. its numbers are plummeting very, very quickly and have been for quite some time. so just to give you an idea, in the mid—1990s we were looking at around 29,000 birds in the population in europe
