let's lead off with kristen holmes. how does the trump team plan to juggle the courtroom appearances and campaign events that are running into each other this week? >> reporter: good morning, phil and poppy, but the one thing to point out here is this is all by choice. donald trump will be ping-pongen between iowa and courtrooms this week, or at least is expected to, but he doesn't actually have to make these appearances. he is choosing to do so. what we know from the schedule so far, and i'll do this week because if we take it any further, it'll be confusing. if you look at this week, tonight he's supposed to come into d.c. so tomorrow he can be present when his legal team presents their arguments about presidential immunity in front of the d.c. appeals court. then off to iowa with a town hall for fox news, back to new york where he's expected to sit in on the closing arguments of his civil fraud case there, and then for the weekend back in iowa, campaign events back to back until those caucuses on monday. now part of

let's start with kristen holmes following former president donald trump's campaign. what is his message on this eve of the iowa caucuses? >> reporter: yeah, fred. just forgive me, i have to talk pretty low. we're in a small room and donald trump is still speaking. this is a packed house here today. this is his only event of the weekend after he canceled several events because of the weather. his message has really been all over the place. one of the big parts of it was attacking nikki haley. we have heard him go after her. he's still talking about her right now, no, it looks like he switched to obama, no, still nikki haley. he is going back and forth linking her to barack obama. and that's been a big part of the messaging here, what they are worried about when it comes to new hampshire and moving forward. the big message is they want to win by a big enough margin in the state of iowa to set the momentum and tone for the primary season. they saw that des moines register poll that has him up by 20 points. they want a 20-point win. his advisers are tempering expectation

kristen, thank you very much. now to cnn's kylie atwood with the nikki haley campaign in des moines. kylie, some encouraging news for haley in that iowa polling. still, she's way behind the former president. what are they saying? >> reporter: yeah, well nikki haley's campaign and nikki haley herself, of course, are welcoming the fact that that poll overnight shows her closing the gap substantially here in iowa and coming up ahead of ron desantis. if nikki haley is able to pull out a number two spot here in iowa, that gives her extra momentum going into new hampshire. it really sets it up for it to become a one on one competition between she and the former president, former president trump. that's what her campaign has been saying for a while now. but if she exceeds expectations here in iowa, it really does give her an extra boost heading into new hampshire, where she has already done quite well in some recent polls that have come out of the state. nikki haley, for her part, is talking about iowa having the opportu

kristen holmes is in new hampshire. kristen, do we expect a repeat of this at his campaign event tonight? >> reporter: well, generally he talks about his legal issues. i want to point out a couple things i heard during that speech. one, being that democrats can vote in the new hampshire primary. it's something he's been saying as he's watching nikki haley's rise, seeing them get closer and closer. he's saying haley is recruiting democrats to infiltrate the republican primary. to make very clear, democrats cannot vote in the republican primary in new hampshire. independents and registered republicans can. this is why nikki haley's polls are rising because independents don't all identify as conservative. his team is keenly aware of that. the other thing to point out is the idea he's leading nikki haley in the polls by a huge margin. that's incorrect from every adviser i talked to. they're working hard to try and stop her from having any momentum, something that donald trump knows and has continued to say on the campaign t
