if variable to get to the airport cnn's david culver is important, prints. david, you heard gunshots shortly after arriving tell us what are you seeing on the ground? >> and just a few minutes ago, paula, we were hearing gunshots just probably a few miles from where we are and it's almost become routine. and i think for folks who are living here, they don't even flinch. i mean, it's surprising to us, but it shows you just how constant these confrontations are between the police and gangs sometimes between the community members and the gangs directly. the situation as you said, it is dire. i mean, we got to send striving out before curfew set in around 06:00 eastern time. and in the window that we're able to get into one of the communities it gives you a reality check on what they're dealing with, given how supply lines are essentially severed and how they're relying on each other. just stay afloat. leaving us getting into a community like that, relied on conversations with a local who then had further conversation so as to make sure that they knew when we wer

in port-au prince in recent weeks with some even threatening to overthrow the government cnn's david culver has just returned from haiti. david, walk us through what's happening here >> well, these past 72 hours, boris, we've seen this major surge in violence gripping haiti. the government there declaring that state of emergency, they're implementing a curfew. the us embassy telling americans to get out. and as you mentioned, we were on the ground just before what is now this most recent outbreak and what stood out to us i think is the amount of control that the gangs and there are dozens of them have seized over the country and particularly the capital port-au-prince. the un estimates gangs now control 80% of the capitol. and we saw it firsthand as we were trying to distinguish routes to go through the city. i mean, it would change hourly at times in our planning given gunfire and violence could erupted at any point, kidnappings and extortions, their rampant right now the entire situation is desperate and over the weekend, more than 3,000 inmates were estimated to have escaped from haitian

declaring a state of emergency and a curfew after thousands of inmates escaped from prison cnn's david culver, travel there for a firsthand look. david, how volatile is the situation >> dire is the best word for it. wolffian, you used it. we've seen a surge in violence gripping haiti over the past 72 hours. the us embassy they are urging americans to leave. and as you mentioned, we were on the ground just before this most recent outbreak. we went along with an under cover unit of haiti's national police. they're tasked with going after gangs. but what stood out to us is that the amount of influence these gangs have gained, the un estimates gangs now control 80% of the capital r route driving through port-au-prince with sometimes change hourly, given gunfire and violence, abrupt erupted, unpredictably, honestly and we notice kidnappings, extortions. were rampant all in all this is a desperate situation. and over the weekend, more than 3,000 inmates were believed to have escaped from haitian prisons. now, a haiti police union warning that if those numbers are accurate, quote we are done. no one

cnn's david culver is live on the scene in port-au-prince. david, what are you seeing their tonight on the ground? >> hi there, paula. yeah, we wanted to get a sense today of some of the human suffering that is playing out here in haiti's capital city. and as we try to move out and about, i mean the logistics in the planning from a security perspective are quite tedious so we tried to figure out each morning how we're going to go a certain route just because it can change by the hour, if not by the minute, but we were able to go to one area. it was quite striking to us and that is but was a school and now has become a refugee camp people who are refugees in their own city. and this one place that we went to stood out to us because it's been more than a week since they've had food brought in. they have no running water, nothing clean for them to be able to drink and bay then and they're septic tanks are overflowing. and this gives you a quick sampling of what their life is like right now >> so this was a school here in port-au-prince, haiti and

cnn's david culver is on the scene from inside haiti with the story of what it takes to get people back on american soil. >> the challenge for us citizens trying to leave port-au-prince begins as soon as they start driving to the us embassy, getting their involves driving through either gang-controlled or gangs contested territories it's dangerous and it's unpredictable in armored vehicles. we saw that firsthand. and yet this is the only way out for some the airport. is shut down and many feel trapped in recent days, the us embassy began to evacuating citizens who could make it to the embassy. managing the safety of those evacuations is regional security officer steve strickland. >> how does haiti how >> does port-au-prince today compared to your past 19 years? >> there's nothing like port-au-prince, the security situations here or nothing like anything i've experienced before i've spent time in afghanistan, pakistan iraq in africa, and the unique unique circumstances here. i've not seen a parallel to those in any other security environment that i've served >> i made these challenges. t
