i'm jonathan lemire. thanks for starting your day with us. and we begin with last night's primary results and the closely watched republican senate race in the state of ohio. nbc news projects that trump-backed bernie moreno has won the gop primary in the buckeye state. moreno beat out two other candidates by a considerable margin to defeating state senator matt dolan who was endorsed by ohio governor mike dewine as well as defeating ohio secretary of state frank derose. moreno is a former car dealer and block chain entrepreneur. he was endorsed by donald trump back in december, and his win reflects trump's ability to influence the outcome of contested republican primaries. moreno will now face incumbent democratic senator sherrod brown in november. we'll hear from senator brown about the upcoming campaign, when he joins us later today on "morning joe." now, of course, it's no surprise that both president joe biden and former president donald trump easily swept up more delegates in last night's primary ra

i'm jonathan lemire. thanks for being with us today. and we're going to begin with breaking news out of baltimore this morning. the francis scott key bridge part of interstate 695 partially collapsed overnight. it happened when a large cargo ship struck the bridge. the vessel was leaving baltimore for sri lanka. you can see the footage there. the bridge just topples into the water. the local coast guard received a report of an impact at 127 a.m. according to the associated press emergency responders are searching for at least seven people who are believed to be in the water. right now it's too early to know just how many people overall were affected, but the baltimore fire department has called the collapse a developing mass casualty event. baltimore mayor brandon scott tweeted earlier he was aware of the incident and was en route to this collapse site. nbc news correspondent ryan nobles is heading to the scene for us, joining us by phone. ryan, this is obviously just happened a short time ago. the footage here is hard even to fathom ju

i'm jonathan lemire. thanks for being here. we'll begin this morning with the latest from the bridge collapse in baltimore where the bodies of two construction workers who were on the francis scott key bridge have been recovered. the men were found trapped inside a red pickup truck 25 feet under water. the victims were identified as 35-year-old alejandro hernandez fuenes and a 26-year-old. we're learning more about the other victims who were working on the bridge at the time of the terrible early morning collapse. miguel luna who was in his 40s was a husband, father of three, and had called the state of maryland his home for 19 years. manor in his 30s was also a father and started his own maintenance company. both were described as hardworking humble men by those who knew them. as it stands officials are pausing recovery efforts for the four other construction workers who are presumed dead because it is no longer safe for divers to be in the water. adding that the bodies are likely encased in the metal and concrete of the falle

i'm jonathan lemire.nks for starting your day and week with us, and we'll begin with what is a huge day legally for former president donald trump. trump is expected to be in a new york kourtsroom this morning for a hearing on the hush money case. that trial, you'll recall, was supposed to start today, but it was delayed earlier this month after federal prosecutors turned over thousands of documents, which the manhattan district attorney's office says are largely irrelevant to the case. the judge is now expected to set a new start date for the criminal trial, potentially sometime next month. meanwhile, today is also the time for trump to put up a bond of nearly a half a billion dollars in his civil fraud case. the fraud would prevent the new york attorney general from collecting on the judgment while he appeals. trump's attorneys have asked the appellate court to reduce or lay aside the bond. the appeals court generally issues rulings on tuesdays and thursdays, so there's very little chance it will act tod
