cnn's melanie zanona joins us, live up on capitol hill for us. melanie, what are republicans? i trying to accomplish with this hearing >> well, initially this hearing was billed as a way to highlight discrepancies and hunter biden's closed-door testimony. remember this is only the second public hearing that house republicans have had related to their impeachment inquiry. >> and a >> hunter biden has been at the heart of their probe, but since hundred decided to not show so up today, republicans are going to turn to other witnesses who claim that president joe biden was deeply involved in his son's foreign business deals, but those claims have yet to be verified. and in fact, many of those claims have been undercut by other witnesses. so gym, there are signs that today's hearing is shaping up to be more of a step spectacle than any substance starters, i'm told that there's going to be an empty seat with hunter biden's name on it there's also going to be a witness testifying remotely, as you mentioned, from federal prison. and just moments ago, a democrat on the committee, jared

cnn's melanie zanona has been talking to republican sources. she joins us now. what are you hearing from gop lawmakers? >> well, the reviews were really mixed inside the gop. i mean, there was universal excitement, i would say, about the choice of katie britt. she is young. she is a conservative. she is a woman. she was really seen as a rising star inside the gop. but some republicans were really baffled not only by the setting, which was in a kitchen, but also by her delivery, which was very dramatic and halting at times to just not how she normally talks. here's what one gop lawmaker told me using some rather colorful language to criticize the speech. they told me who thought this was a good idea. if this is our attempt to get suburban women, good effing luck with that. i thought both the so to and the rebuttal were unwatchable. we continue to have a woman problem just keep shooting ourselves in the face. and meanwhile another senior gop aide told me that it was difficult to watch, but also noted that these things are notoriously tricky. they said it's an impo

the bill would fund several government departments and agencies through september cnn's melanie zanona joins us now, live from capitol hill. melanie, here we are, yet again. is there any reason to believe that the senate won't make this deal happen? >> well, there's no question that the senate is going to pass this spending package, but there is a question about when they are going to pass that. remember in the senate, it requires cooperation from every single time senator in order to move quickly. and right now, there is a holdup over amendments for some republicans seeking some votes on issues like the border and immigration and many other topics so they are in the process of trying to work out an agreement on potential amendment votes and how to move forward. and it could potentially drag late into the night or early morning, but i would say the bigger hurdle is two weeks now because that is when the rest of the government is going to run out of money. and those are some of the most complicated and tricky and hot button bills in the federal government. right? including the departmen

cnn's melanie zanona is in west virginia. so melanie, what's going on here? what is nobody want to join you there? >> well, typically these retreats are used to unify the party both on policy and on message. but this year the retreat comes amid the backdrop of a whole lot of republican infighting. there are still a lot of hard feelings about the historic ouster of kevin mccarthy, the former speaker. the republicans have been really struggling to pass even basic procedure he drove votes given their razor thin majority. >> and you also have >> now some republicans going after one another in primary. so many republicans tell me they are just simply exhausted and they were not excited about the idea of taking a bus ride for four hours with box lunches and having to spend extended period of time with their colleagues. so many of them tell me they're deciding to gifted retreat altogether. some of them have also complained about the location this year, as you noted, it's in west virginia, a departure from past retreats which have taken place in sunny florida. >> but

let's get some more from our capitol hill reporter, melanie zanona right now. melanie, how is mcconnell responding to schumer in this new cnn interview? >> yeah. this was an incredibly sharp rebuke from mitch mcconnell. he had already taken to the senate floor. remember yesterday to lambaste chuck schumer over his calls for new leadership in israel. but in a new exclusive interview with our manu raju macondo really escalated his rhetoric and said, schumer's speech as a direct contradiction of not only united states policy, but also democratic policy. let me read you part of what mcconnell told mano, he said, you can't spend years hyperventilating about foreign interference in our democracy and then turn around and tell allies, particularly democratic allies, who who their leaders should be. and when they should have attacks schumer directly, who is the highest-ranking jewish official in the country saying, just because he's jewish, doesn't give him a pass advocate something that's completely inconsistent with our past approach to democratic countries. so some ve

cnn's melanie zanona is live for us on capitol hill. melanie, what more can you tell us? >> so this report is accusing the january 6 select committee of purposely withholding it testimony that that directly undercuts cassidy hutchinson's explosive testimony about trump's behavior on january 6, inside the presidential motorcade. that transcript in question, which republicans have gotten their hands don include testimony from the driver who says yes, trump's voice was raised, but he was not screaming at the secret service agents in the vehicle and that he did not lunge or physically region for the steering wheel, as hutchinson testified, so republicans are saying the select committee purposely and selectively play up cassidy's testimony because it was more damaging to donald trump, but jake, there are a few points worth noting here. number one, the department of homeland security said that the transcripts were not released because they were under review at the time number two of the january 6, what committee in its final report does acknowledge that there were conflicting a
