here in burlingame, the caltrain crossing at broadway in california drive is one of the most dangerous rail crossings in the state over the years. dozens of vehicles and pedestrians have been hit here with multiple fatalities. the state legislature had allocated 113 million dollars in funding to help pay for improvements. here and 2 other rail crossings, one in palo alto, one, another in mountain view. but that funding was recently pulled from next year's proposed budget. this is a massive problem. we have a chance to fix it. let's not miss that window. state senator josh becker who represents the area is leading the charge to try to get that funding reinstated because that's going to leverage hundreds of million dollars to both federal funds county and local funds. so this is all ready to go. we're ready to break ground next year, but we need the 70 million with the thought of losing funding. it really does put in jeopardy our ability to get the project done. caltrain executive director michele bouchard says the transit agency supports the proposed safety improvements were operating a

the broadway crossing in burlingame.the past ten years, there have been 22 reports of trains smashing into cars or people right there in burlingame. caltrans said its long awaited project to fix the problem is ready to go, but it would build a bridge to allow the train to pass above while drivers cross safely below. this is similar along the peninsula. lawmakers say the $70 million from the state to help pay for it is on the chopping block. drivers say the issue needs to be fixed asap. it is very scary. you have to follow the instructions all the time. traffic signal. a railroad track and a traffic signal. it's all very tight together, so you have to be pretty observant of what's going on. you have to be observant. it's confusing. and yes, there's a lot of traffic right there at that burlingame crossing. lawmakers are pushing for governor newsom to add this money back into the state budget. if he does, caltrain says the project will break ground next year. if not, it could trigger the loss of federal dollars that have al

this one here in burlingame would cost 70 million. been out here to this burlingame crossing multiple times to cover deadly crashes. video that you're seeing is from two serious crashes here just in the last year and a half. the family of a woman who died here in 2021 ended up suing caltrans and the city of burlingame for not making this crossing safer. now, one of the problems is that there are lights on either end of this crossing. so if they aren't timed well, then cars end up stuck between those lights and then they could end up stuck on the tracks as well. so lawmakers will be here this morning to host a press conference. they're calling on the legislature and governor gavin newsom to include funding for these projects in the budget. they say this project will address safety and congestion challenges, including a high number of crashes that happen here. they also say that first responders are often delayed because of the traffic congestion that ends up here. and then obviously, it seems like the lights are one of the big issues.
