we start with the protesters at stanford. several several civil rights organizations are asking stanford university not to discipline the students who rallied in support of palestinians. the asian law caucus and council on american-islamic relations care are among more than 35 groups that sent a letter to the university. they're asking stanford's president and provost to drop the disciplinary charges against those students who participated in the recent demonstrations that included an encampment on campus, the letter claims. stanford has not provided specific factual allegations against the 13 students in question. the students say they're facing academic probation or suspension. we reached out to stanford for comment but have yet to hear back. another headline we're watching was a black family in san francisco, the target of a hate crime, a fire destroying two homes near alamo square today, one of the people who lives there says he's recently been getting disturbing, racist hate mail. this is a this is at fillmore and grove

now, stanford's president says the student encampment violate its school policies and that the student protesters will be disciplined. the demonstrators say they are unfazed by the threats as cleanup is underway at ucla, where 210 protesters were arrested early this morning . >> that was following a nine hour standoff with police, ucla workers clearing structures and debris from royce quad today after law enforcement breached the pro-palestine encampment on campus. bulldozers were used to move trash into giant bins. eventually, those were filled to the brim. graffiti still covers the outside of royce hall, but it too will eventually be removed. earlier today, protesters were arrested at ucla and they were released from jail. demonstrators greeted with food and cheers. we are told those arrested were cited for unlawful assembly and are set to appear in court at a later date. a charge of unlawful assembly in california carries a maximum penalty of up to six months in jail, or a $1,000 fine. ucla classes will be remote tomorrow as campus operations are still limited at this time. >> south

and so this is going to affect athletes at cal and at stanford. can you talk about what benefits they may see as athletes, perhaps for the money generating sports like football, basketball and what it might mean for those programs? >> sure. so the players who have played in the past, over the last four previous years, they may see checks football players in the neighborhood of 100 to $200,000 and going forward, you know, again, there's the revenue out there that's going to go to student athletes. is 2 billion a year to start with, and it's about 20 to 21 million a year for the pac 12 schools. so they could see some sizable money going forward. >> what about smaller sports like rowing and fencing? and is there any concern that such a structure may mean, you know, kids don't go into that sports when they're younger because they're looking at the money down the line. >> you know, maybe, maybe kids will be motivated to go into money sports, but that's not a reason not to compensate, athletes for what they're creating. >> is this life changing for a lo

this is the look at the encampment at stanford university today. while police aren't forcing them out, stanford has warned students those camps violate university policy, so students involved could be suspended or even expelled. so far, stanford hasn't said if any students have actually been disciplined. students at uc berkeley have also been camping out since last week. they've pitched tents on the steps of sproul hall and hung banners from the building. some universities outside the bay area and other parts of the country have launched hard crackdowns on demonstrations, but uc berkeley says it will only involve police to protect students and faculty. a different story at cal poly humboldt. early this morning, police arrested about 35 protesters who took over two buildings on campus. the university said it supports free speech, but the barricaded buildings create a fire hazard. protesters took over the buildings last week. it forced the campus to shut down for the rest of the semester, which ends next friday at columbia university, pro-palestinian
