new reporting from the new york times, michael schmidt reveals that a small group of the white houseisers are considering ways to persuade the president to exit the race, there are three factors that are being considered. they have to make the case to the president that he cannot win against donald trump, they have to persuade him to believe that another candidate like kamala harris could be to mr. trump and they have to assure mr. biden that the process to choose another candidate would be orderly and not devolve into chaos in the democratic party. joining me now is michael schmidt, investigative reporter for the new york times, thank you for being here. i do wonder since you were talking to those in his orbit whether they had expectations for tonight and whether there was any particular hope they had for the president's performance.>> i'm sure they hoped he would do well and they know this is a good opportunity to showcase himself again, but i think that there is a realization that there are larger forces at play and that putting the toothpaste back in the tube from the debate perf

joining me now is michael schmidt, investigative reporter for the new york times.ou are talking to those in biden's orbit, i wonder whether they had any expectations for tonight or any particular hope for the president's performance. >> i'm sure they hoped he would do well, and they knew that this was a good opportunity to showcase himself again but i think there is a realization that there are larger forces at play here, and that putting the toothpaste back in the tube from the debate performance is something far larger than an interview with george stubble often this -- stephanopoulos or the interview held today and i think they've come to that realization in recent days and that they face a massive obstacle in the president himself. i think that what you saw tonight was a fair assessment of what the president thinks but i think he is probably even more entrenched than we appreciated. he is a stubborn person who has defied the odds throughout his entire career. he has gone further than i think he ever thought he could and he has often done that as the underdog an

"new york times" investigative reporter michael schmidt helped break that story, he joins us now. ael, walk us through what you've been told. >> well, basically people that have worked for the president and alongside him for a long time, and people that have influence with him, have seen what many democrats have seen and that is that biden -- they've come to the conclusion that biden -- the pathway to victory is not really there for him and that their biggest obstacle now is convincing him that he cannot win and that they have to do that. he acknowledged as much last night at the press conference saying that, you know, he would need to be convinced that he cannot win, but they realize what many other democrats certainly on the hill, some that have said it publicly and some that have not, that there is -- there is -- the chances of him winning are increasingly low, and that they need to do something. and this really speaks to the crisis and standoff that we face. you have a president of the united states who is increasingly entrenched in his position of wanting to stay in. i think,
