my next guest is zeroing in on the issue as she runs to be one of the only ob/gyn's on capitol hill,upporting your right to an abortion. joining me now is dr. kristin lyerly, abortion provider and democratic card today -- candidate for congress in wisconsin. let's get out the facts, there are currently no pro-abortion rights ob/gyn's in congress, why is having someone like you so critical in this moment? >> we note the stories. we have the privilege of sitting in examination rooms with our patients hearing their experiences and understanding what their lives are like, and helping them solve some of the most intimate, important problems in their lives, not just as it affects them but their families and their entire communities. i have to tell you, everyone has a story. young people, old people, men and women, does not matter, all of our lives have been affected by reproductive healthcare issues, that is why we need a pro-choice ob/gyn doctor in congress. >> you have been on the front lines in your practice but in the court system. in 2022, you join a lawsuit as a plaintiff to try to n

in an ob/gyn after it happened in my state tube and decided to be pregnant, the third baby. ruth i a beautiful baby and a healthy wife. hoping to look at the ultrasound screen is a healthy pregnancy. i saw a pregnancy without a skull and a brain. that was a watershed moment for me realizing i was diagnosed with a pregnancy which is a fatal anomaly. i was going to have to fleet my state to get care. too that began a journey where my husband and i fled he's also an ob/gyn prude my partners took care of my patients while i was gone for 24 hours. my parents took care of our children. i thought about what do i pack for an out-of-state abortion? again, white privilege. so i got on the airplane got a very safe abortion in a clinic. because of our connection and then i came back and put my white coat on and started seeing patients the next day that's the most traumatic part taking care of patients in my state and seeing the trauma over and over again which is led to so much advocacy being around individuals like you who are still loving and supportive and want to make change. kind o

it opened the process expect that -- prospect that ob-gyn's might not be trained to provide sometimes lifesaving abortion care. no matter who you are, the idea that doctors could graduate without the proper training to do their jobs and save lives should scare all of us. we also saw prospective students who might otherwise be attractored to the our -- attracted to our top-tier research institutions. we saw an uptick of ob-gyn's entrusted to coming to our state and while it is disheartening to say, can you blame enemy? why would you want to start a career in a state that restricts you from doing your job and prevents your patients from exercising their right to control their own bodies? that's why last year i introduced my reproductive health care training act, commonsense legislation to support training for health care providers in abortion care, including for providers forced to travel out of state due to abortion restrictions. my bill with senator murray would help ease the burden of travel costs for eligible medical programs to expand and support education for students, residents,

ob/gyn's do it all the time. let's give you that and see if we can prevent that miscarriage and save that baby. but for some reason, the american college of ob/gyn's and the abortion industry have decided this is junk science, it is fake, the process doesn't work, so in colorado they passed a law last year that was going to penalize doctors, charge them with medical misconduct if they would actually participate in this process. so if a woman has taken the abortion pill and she says, why did i do that? i shouldn't have done that, i want to save my baby. why can't she change her mind? what is wrong with that? the abortion industry won't let her. they want to shut down every medical personnel willing to help her change her mind to save that baby. just this past january, the u.s. house of representatives voted on the pregnant students rights acts that would ensure that pregnant students at colleges and universities be informed about accommodations and resources available to them. maybe it is the fact that if she is i

least with planned parenthood, want to remind people that the clinics are still open for sci testing, ob/gynontrol. here in illinois, folks with planned parenthood are preparing for a surge in demand when it comes to care, and i spoke with the executive director of planned parenthood illinois, and she tells me, unfortunately, they have already gotten used to treating patients from other states. now, with this law, there are some exceptions. for example, if a pregnancy is the result of rape or incest, a woman has a certain time period to report that to a physician or a member of law enforcement. also, if it's determined the fetus cannot survive outside of the womb of the mother, an abortion will be allowed. and an abortion will be allowed if it's determined it's necessary to save the life of a mother. i asked the leaders in illinois if those exceptions bring them a little bit of comfort. here's what they said. >> lawmakers are forgetting that these bans don't decrease the need for patients to have an abortion. it just puts medically unnecessary burdens on patients for getting their care. nati
