lake tahoe. chris, before we talk about this new robot cleaner being used at zephyr cove and soquel's, what is the message you are sending to beachgoers this year? >> basically. well, tahoe can't take your breath away, but basically it's just to leave lake tahoe better than you found it. that's really our message, this place is beautiful. especially in the middle of summer when the lake is full, and that water is nice and clean and refreshing. but that means that big crowds are going to be coming up here. it's also going to be very hot in the valley, in the bay area. so if you're going, people are going to be coming up here looking for a little bit of refuge from that. but lake tahoe is not a national park. we get 15 million visitors every year. that's four times as many as yosemite. and there's no there's not as much staff to clean up after you. so just clean up after yourself. leave the beach more beautiful than you found it. so for next summer, it's just as, just as lovely. >> always a good re

it's an effort to keep tahoe beaches clean. the last 4th of july, some 8,000 pounds of trash left behind public consumption of alcohol is banned at nevada beach and zephyr cove resort, as well as chambers landing on the west shore. this ban is in effect wednesday through sunday. fines for violators could go as high as $5,000 for individuals, up to 10,000 for organizations. >> well, look, if you head up to tahoe this summer, the nonprofit group keep tahoe blue reminds you keep the beach clean. it's a community effort. organizers with the biggest nonprofit in charge of protecting the lake gave us some tips on how to leave the beaches out there cleaner than when you arrive. >> bringing your own reusable garbage bags and reusable cups. and there's going to be a lot more infrastructure on the beaches through our new, which we just launched, blue beaches program. >> now, this new program provides more facilities out there, education and also enforcement on several beaches around lake tahoe happening today. >> gas powered leaf blowers

state water officials are looking to see if a seasonal problem has returned to lake tahoe.a toxic algae bloom, which can grow quickly when temperatures heat up. signs went up at el dorado beach in south lake tahoe, warning swimmers to be cautious of the algae. officials collected water samples today and should know in about a week if toxic algae is present or not. it's been a problem at tahoe beaches in the past. >> in the central valley, advocates are blaming an incarcerated woman's death over the weekend on heat exhaustion. state officials say the woman incarcerated at central california women's facility in chowchilla was hospitalized on july 4th and died two days later. the cause of death appeared to be related to an ongoing medical condition and not heat related, according to officials. however, organizers with the california coalition for women prisoners say several incarcerated women incarcerated women reported dangerous physical symptoms resembling heat related illness. they're now calling for an investigation into what they are saying was a preventable death. >> hun

this 4th of july holiday is south lake tahoe. temps.e about 30 degrees cooler than many parts of the bay area, and for the first time in several years, the lake is full. thanks to all the snow we had in these past couple of winters. give you an idea of just how much water has filled the lake you can use to see sand where the boats are now floating. locals and visitors say they're so excited that the lake has come back so strong. efforts are also underway by a nonprofit group to keep the lake looking clean and beautiful. unlike last year after the fourth, when volunteers picked up 6,000 pounds of garbage, the message really is that tahoe is a beautiful, special place and it's a privilege to come here and enjoy this. we want to make sure everyone has that. so by just taking a few extra steps when you're here, you can ensure that we keep tahoe blue now and in the future. i don't think it's fair to the people that live here for their place to be left this poorly. so i think it's important to clean it up. very sage advice and something to ke

well, a warning for people visiting lake tahoe. two beaches are now off limits because of a sewage spill. it started on thursday night, the placer county sheriff's office said a contractor damaged a main sewer export pipeline. then sewage from the pipeline overflowed and reached cornelian bay in north lake tahoe. yesterday, officials issued a health advisory for bacteria in the water, and they closed two beaches along the bay. it includes patten beach and carnelian west beach. the county is now working to sample and test the water. no word on when the beaches will reopen. we have an update for you tonight about that massive fire near yosemite fire. cal fire says the french fire was ignited by someone using a lawn mower in dry grass. agencies says it's referred the case to the district attorney's office. d.a. is going to decide whether or not to prosecute. the french fire was sparked on the 4th of july in mariposa, 44 miles southwest of yosemite. grew to more than 900 acres. you see some of the damage there. it destroyed 18 structur

the nonprofit group keep tahoe blue led clean up efforts around the lake. 400 volunteers gathered at six public beaches and one private one even sent people into the water to fish out floating junk crews leading the cleanup. they were pleasantly surprised, saying there was less trash on the beaches than in previous years. so far, from what we've seen, lots of volunteers and not a lot of trash, which is what we want to see at lake tahoe. organizers, they believe they saw less trash this year because of increased awareness and because of an alcohol ban at some of the beaches this 4th of july last year, volunteers picked up get this 6,000 pounds of trash and this year they added a bunch of bathrooms all up and down the beaches and in lake tahoe. and they also added a lot more garbage cans. and as you said, they did all that because they were on with us at 7:00. they did a lot of awareness of telling people to take their stuff with them. it helped. yeah, it helped. all right. and the beach water is where you wanted to get away today. and also for the rest of th
