kevin gore, senior investment strategist for charles schwab, kourtney garcia, wealth manager with gain capital management. it's nice to have both of you back. what do you make of this market? i think its hallmark will go down to be, the bull market anyway, one of resiliency. i mean, at every turn, you throw almost anything at this market and it shrugs it off and continues to do what it's doing. >> i think the downturn that we had about two weeks ago, there was fears that was because we were going into recession. but the fact that you're seeing the markets shrug that off has become because you're getting a lot of good data. we've got cpi, ppi coming out. you've got retail sales. the big picture is the consumer is holding, inflation is coming down. a lot of the recession fears are likely overblown. and the downturn was more likely due to the yen carry trade than going into recession, which would be the worst thing for the markets. that is ultimately going to put the markets on a positive backdrop. >> do you see it the same way? >> i'm not so sure that when you look at the selloff, the se

charles: all right, folks, joining me now charles schwab and company co-chief investment strategist rather a lot to unpack. i begin with a note you wrote with kevin gordon last friday which looks at rate hike cycles going back to 1929 and you put a great chart in there and looking at the chart, wow, there is nothing to really fear, but for the most part it really does well but as you pointed out in the note there is a lot of nuance as toe whether the market goes up or down over the next 12 months, right? >> not only that but you have a very small sample size in terms of prior full rate cycles by the fed where you have a hiking part of the cycle, then a pause period, then a cutting part of the cycle, only 14. you can look at the pause period. you can look six months after the first cut, or 12 months after the first cut. yes, you can do the math to come up with a median or a mean but the range is huge. by definition when you have a small sample size and a really wide range shame on anybody instead of citing an average, say something like typically the market does because there is no typical.

possibly doing a heloc loan, doing what the, do a loan against your investments that you have at charles schwabr somewhere else, maybe look at personal line of credit. those other lines are going to be cheaper because it's a secure loan compared to getting a credit card, which is unsecured, which is going to cost you a lot more. >> so when people come to you and they come to you and say, hey, jason, i have too much debt, i, i really need to get a hold of this. can you help me? and you can. right right. >> yeah, definitely. so what we do is, yes, we could definitely help. so we tell people is what you need to first do is grab every single thing that you have. look at all your checking accounts, your savings account or your credit card statements. start itemizing which what's every single thing you have. and usually that's the tough thing. and people like, you know what? i spend way too much on this one item or not, or i need to cut back. here is a tough thing for a lot of people to do, but once they do that part, then we go back and start putting together a strategy of how we can pay down that d

. >> let's get to charles schwab, i don't remember having discussed that with youin the past.k mark fund why? >> we like schwab because of the cost advantage they have over the other large asset gatherers. they are maybe two thirds the cost of the larger platforms like fidelity and vanguard. the old wire house firms, they're significantly cheaper and because of that, they've been able to grow assets faster than the rest of the industry. schwab's method for doing that has been to give away a lot of services for free and then kind of make it up on the interest income on cash balances. there's been concern that maybe they won't be allowed to do that going forward -- >> yes. >> -- we think that's probably overblown. but if we're wrong, we think schwab could start charging fees or could kind of revert away from the bank model and it would help to expose to investors how profitable this company really can be, and it's growing significantly faster than the industry selling below a market multiple. >> curious what your thoughts are on the industrials. the sector trading around a five-

say markets are stabilizing and does think a 50 basis points cut in september is justifiable charles schwabns us. >> i know you just heard steve. what does the argument for 50 sound like? >> it may be just final based on how real rates have gone up. i don't think the fed is going to do that and today's data reinforces the fed's bias at this point is probably 25 basis points. i think the jobs report will be the next key measure. the fed hasn't put inflation data in the rearview mirror, but they clearly have elevated the focus on the other part of their mandate which is the labor market. i think that could be the next potential needle mover for expectations around fed policy. probably not going to be pce because once you have cpi and ppi in the books you can map what pce is going to be and doesn't look like that's going to be an outlier. i think the labor market will hold the key. >> i'm looking at something jpmorgan wrote last night looking at the next jobs report, they say job gains in the range of 160 to 200 would likely erase much of the fear invoked by the july print. something of a low
