there was still troop there were still troops in the south. and grant was largely managing that. in the summer of 1876, there were a handful of very severe massacres, racial riots. but really massacres where white southerners attacked and massacred black southerners, former slaves. and so grant was dealing with some of those crises. so he didn't play an enormous role during the campaign itself. but as we get into the crisis that followed, grant actually played a small role during that crisis. now, any other names of note from that period are active in the campaign outside of outside of the two nominees, the nominees for the party? i wouldn't say so. we'll get into it with the crisis that follows. and there's many names of note that are center stage during the crisis, but during the campaign itself, it was again a pretty straightforward campaign. again, democrats emphasized reform. republicans emphasized the bloody shirt associated democrats with treason. republicans also emphasized religious issues. this was often referred to as the, quote unquote catholic question where republica
