the american public as much as they are interested in the stories of john fremont and custer they are interested in the stories of jesse benton and lady bacon as well. it's an interesting phenomenon. there is a tendency to write -- in a lecture to not mention women at all. some of my graduate students would be raising their hands to say where are the women. that is to say they are equally important. their sources, their documents are really critical as well. there is kit carson, who was a huge aid to john c fremont as he goes to california. carson is one of the great american figures although his biography is as complicated and difficult to wrestle with as any figure of the 19th century. he was a great friend to indigenous people at other times involved in relocating, removing and engaging in being the master of native peoples. at times he worked for the u.s. army. at times he was an independent guide, what have you. he does whatever he can to earn a living and make a life. the point of carson just as the point was with somebody like sacajawea, the army cannot do this alone. it needs
