and more of an impact in deterring certain students in certain departments ? >> in s.t.e.m., it is the most pronounced. one s.t.e.m. faculty member -- science, technology, engineering and math. one s.t.e.m. chemist professor ken higher as many students as an entire office. one chemistry student can hire 21 students and the dean of students willie harris 15. when we think what's needed to go to graduate school for any science and or to get into any job, having an internship is huge but yet the gatekeeping that happens in s.t.e.m. at the funneling out hurt students of color, women and lower income college students. what i show in the book is it doesn't just affect -- both present and future prospects. if you can't get the job because you're not comfortable in office hours, you can't get opportunities until it's too late. i would say that the way in which s.t.e.m. faculty needs to grapple with this, -- high knowledge disciplines like philosophy or history. all those things where you are going to major in it in undergrad and probably go to law school type of major. discipline does matter. >> thank you very much. >> >> book tv brings you the latest from c-s
