first alert meteorologist darren peck tracking what to expect >> two rainmakers, the first one coming in tonight. not overwhelming, not big time rain. let's track it. we play it ahead to 9:00. 9:00, we see the better organized lines of rain starting to organize from the north bay. from there, overnight hours, keep going south. then, we will see the better rain show up 3:00, 4:00 a.m. time frame, pausing it right there. that is a quarter to 5:00 in the morning. noticeable rain. playing it forward from there in the afternoon it dwindles quickly. not big totals to this. 9:00 tonight and pretty much let's say 11:00 a.m. tomorrow. that is the window for light showers, not really a lot to this. in fact, let's put up the saturday numbers. those are better, these are tonight's numbers. not super impressive. let's do compare and contrast. if we just saw what is coming through for the rain from that system, let's get slightly wider view. we will play it through again. what you are going to see again here is a replay of tonight's rain for perspective. then, you will see the follow up for sunday'

let's get to darren peck with more on what to brace for. >> we should brace for more picking up in intensity. it has been raining for the last couple of hours. raining steady enough. i know it might be difficult to pick out on here. there is a neatly outlined pole gone up here for parts of napa valley, right through there. the northern edge of sha joama county. think windsor up towards there -- the northern edge of sonoma county. think windsor up towards there. now, if we take a look at the high-resolution forecast shows us, as good as the rain has been up there so far. watch it pick up in intensity. i took it to 9:00. see the time stamp down there. the rain will get stronger than what you had so far. then, 9:00, all of the way until 3:00 a.m. that is when we enter the window for rain. this system has not brought us what it intends to in terms of rainfall. going through the early morning hours. the last of the showers will fizzle out. for most of the day tomorrow, it does not rain. this is what is still to go. an inch and a quarter to fall. this is the location where the weather service put

meteorologist darren peck here to break down this ultra-rare event. >> the tornado warning woke me up and then it was just so loud. i thought the windows were going to be blown in. i went running to the hallway because there is no windows there. >> plus, waking up to san francisco's first-ever tornado warning. >>> and a successful hip replacement surgery for nancy pelosi. the latest on her injury, hospitalization, and her recovery overseas. >>> of course we begin on this wild saturday evening with two tornadoes around the bay area. >> the warning was the first ever in san francisco bay city history. a tsunami warning triggered panic throughout the area. now, kpix has confirmed there was a tornado in scotts valley. several people have been taken to a nearby trauma center. doerun? >> we start getting on that warning for the city. there was no touchdown on that one. there was straight-line wind damage in the city. it was a justified warning, and i will explain why in a minute. that was a tornado. this is a little after 1:00 today in scotts valley. this is down in the santa cruz mountains

and that happened because of some epic swells, and so darren peck is here with another incoming systemand what that's going to mean in terms of surf, waves, winds. >> it is not as bad as what came through. in the next visit, i'll show you why the waves coming over the next sunday night, but it's not nearly as bad. still an advisory. and we also need to talk about the rain, which is coming down. take a look at the north bay. this is the last hour of radar, very light. this is the beginning. let me show you how it will intensify over the course of tonight. and see the time down here? so the showers are just about to start to pick up. off again, on again showers through the entire morning. on saturday, i'll let that go until 2:00 in the afternoon. now we'll play this forward. none of this is big. it is like on again, off again fairly light rain with some perspective on this. how much rain might we get? when this is done, 1:00 in the afternoon tomorrow. maybe a couple hundredths in the south bay. .2 inches in north bay. this is rainmaker number one. a quick preview of what's coming our way

. >>> it is the all important cusp of the weekend forecast now with first alert meteorologist darren peck. what are we expecting? >> we've got wonderful weather right now. we might not be thinking about this because we've done it for so long. we're 10 degrees above average for daytime highs in general. the question has to be staying this way the rest of december? what about rain? might we get some rain around here? first thing i want to do is give you the perspective. we'll look at tomorrow morning's lows and highs. i'll get everybody on here so you can see your saturday. the first thing i want to do is get a wide view on the map and show you what we did today. i'm going to pull out a couple representative spots that spotlight the bay, whether it's the south bay number, the tri valley number or inland contra costa, san francisco with the daytime high today getting up into the upper 60s. it's pretty much mid-december. look at santa rosa. i think what would help is the perspective on here. where do these numbers fall in relation to what average should be for this time of year? well, we coul

let's bring in meteorologist darren peck. >> we've got some rain coming our way tonight, devin, and then another system for sunday morning. that's the more notable one, the sunday morning rain, but i've got to show you what's about to happen over the next several hours. we'll play through futurecast imagery and you'll watch the time staff down there. you see a few showers as we get towards 9:00 tonight. i'm going to stop it because by the time we've gotten to 9:00 tonight, we've got a nice little band of rain just showing up in the north bay. none of this is real heavy, but taking this forward through the remainder of the overnight hours there are reinforcements that show up. some of it does get a little heavier overnight. this is probably one of the more impressive time frames for tonight's rain. even at that, it's so late tonight it's actually tomorrow morning. we're looking at 4:45 on saturday morning. let's keep our vantage point because we'll take it from that point and go until it clears out. really by about 1:00 in the afternoon we should see the last stray showers come through. t

. >>> first alert weather now, let's check in with meteorologist darren peck. >> going to start on that exact point, devin. look at the two places that were most vulnerable on monday. you can see the wharf down there for santa cruz and see mavericks to my side. they were 60-foot waves here at mavericks and they had the big surfing competition, but it got an assist because there's a reef right off the coast that was really able to amplify that wave. what's coming our way now and you can kind of see the next swell which is already building off the coast here, this is not that big. instead what we have coming our way is about 30 to 40-foot waves. that's what's in store from this next system coming our way that's going to be able to deliver some waves, but nothing that's as intent as what we saw. let's leave behind the surf story and look at what's coming our way in terms of rain. we've already got some showers that are showing up when we look at just the last hour of radar here. this is just like the leading edge of the next system that's going to deliver a good amount of rain. it's coming

. >>> turning to weather now, darren peck joining us. i went out for a run this morning. it was cold outside. it was chilly. >> came on fast. >> i needed a jacket or something. >> tomorrow's colder. we had those series of rainmakers. when they finally leave, the cold air gets left behind and we have clear skies. >> that was nice, but that cold was biting. >> what we're looking at on here are locations that either have a frost advisory, the deep blue over here, or a little more intense wording, a freeze warning. that's the diablo range down there. what we really care about is the light blue area in the north bay where you've got a freeze warning tomorrow. in the north bay tuesday morning, upper 30s, mid-30s, in fact, for some places and this is the coldest morning of the week. it will be 3 to 4 degrees colder tomorrow than you were today. on new year's day, wednesday, you'll probably put 3 or 4 more degrees back on. we'll fill in everybody's morning lows so you see how this plays out for your part of the bay, a lot of low 40s on here and this is your coldest morning of the

. >>> first alert weather now, we made it past our first round of rain, but meteorologist darren peck tracking another storm for us tomorrow. >> look, there it is. we're looking at it on the virtual set. we can already see rain has arrived in the north bay. there's a flood watch up there because they're going to get it a lot more in terms of time and duration than the rest of the bay will, but the rest of the bay will get a good amount. i want to go straight to the details. let's look at first i want you to see the big picture how this storm plays out. then we'll come back to the virtual map and pull out specifics, but first this storm needs a bit of an overview because it's going to be around about the next 24 hours and will have impressive elements. here's where it is now. i'm going to bring you to the first start of this when we get widespread rain across most of the bay. that's tonight, 8:00, 9:00. you'll see the timing in a second. think of this as the first wave. tonight everybody gets widespread rain. there's a lot more to this system. watching it in the big picture will help u

meteorologist darren peck is tracking the rain here in the bay area. looks like a bigger storm on the way. >> yeah. so one foot in the sierra tonight. by the time we get to sunday, 4 feet total from now till then. >> that will make a rough return down the mountain. >> if you're coming back sunday. we'll get to the winter storm warning in a second. there's like a solid 48 hour period where you don't want to be driving in the sierra. it's going to be a mess. it's a good looking storm coming our way and i'm not even talking about this. this is storm number one, the leftovers from last night's storm. this one's fairly light by comparison, but if you look where we are now, you can see there are scattered showers just about anywhere bay area-wide. these are all fairly light. i'm going to remove the rain a second because this actually pales in comparison to what we had come through overnight. look how much rain we got. this goes back to about say 11:00 last night up until about 30 minutes ago. it was pretty good. this outperformed, got a little more rain than

first alert chief meteorologist darren peck is tracking when we can expect as we head into the weekend. >> a little more rain, ryan. it's going to come in two chapters. there's a little rain that's coming through tonight and then there's a more impressive one, not super impressive, and that's sunday morning. let's start out at the beginning. here's the rain for tonight. watch the timestamp. we'll play this forward to about 9:00. that's about how long it takes before you can see the leading edge of the next band starts to arrive in the north bay. this will look good, but it's really light. from 9:00 tonight we'll let that rain march south across at rest of the bay from 9:00 till like 4:00 in the morning. this is probably the most impressive time for this whole thing from this first weak system. a couple hours right before sunrise tomorrow, 3:00, 4:00, 5:00, everybody's getting light rain out of it and watch what happens. playing it forward from there, it quickly winds down. you'll have light rain possible tomorrow morning after sunrise, but it wouldn't amount to much. you want to see ho

let's get to meteorologist darren peck. >>> what a stark difference a day makes. that's yesterday. this is the view from sutro tower looking down at the golden gate bridge. can you see it? maybe, maybe not. that's yesterday. let's go to today, huge improvement, same camera, same view, same time of day. we dropped a lot of the poor air quality. if we switch over to the weather computer, i can show you. look at the air quality the last several days at moderate and yesterday we really peaked and today you can see what happened. here are the numbers coming way down and air quality improved with. what happened? let's go to the virtual set. first what happened yesterday? why did we get that spike yesterday? a couple of things. one, high pressure, capping lid, smoke coming out of fireplaces, all that's true, but yesterday was different. we've had those circumstances the last four days. why did it spike yesterday? look at the winds yesterday, offshore through the golden gate. look what's going on in the central valley. a lot of that wind, it was subtle, but it was just wafting towards the

as for how it all changed so quickly today, meteorologist darren peck. >> yeah, we've had high pressure around for the last several days. what was it about today that caused the air quality to go down thil so much? you can see the pattern when you look at this map. there's clearly worse air quality in the central valley. and then if you follow the pattern, tracing it from the central valley to the bay, in other words, the parts of the bay that were close es to the central valley are the parts that had the worst air quality today. that is a clue into what happened here. this might not have been entirely all our fault. in other words, all the wood burning fireplaces that are usually responsible for poor air quality this time of year when we get under centers of high pressure like, this i think we got an imported mass of poor air coming from the central valley. let's get over to the virtual set. we'll take a look at what the winds were doing at 11:00 this morning when the smoke started to -- it had really been infiltrating for several hours at this point. watch the way the wind's moving ov

. >>> first alert meteorologist darren peck tracking the storm causing these dangerous conditions. >> on the good news side of this, not as bad as monday. there's the santa cruz wharf where we lost part of it monday. this is mavericks. mavericks had 60-foot waves monday, the same day the pier was damaged on the leading edge of it. that was a high surf warning. what we have issued by the national weather service for the next few days outlined along the coast here is a high surf advisory, a difference in numbers in terms of wave height. still have to be very mindful of this if you're anywhere near the surf even if we're not concerned about more piers getting washed away because the waves instead of 60 feet will be more like 40. that's still enough it can grab you and pull you out with it. look at the swell coming our way. i want to have a closer look to do the comparison. watch the wave energy to our north. when i play this forward, the deal shades of red off the coast are the 60-foot waves of we're not getting that. we're in the yellows and oranges and still gets us within a 20 to 30-f

darren peck will be in at 5:30 to dive much more into that subject in detail.he heart of the storm system. more showers will be possible into early afternoon. finally, that activity starts to die down heading farther into the afternoon and evening, looks like by saturday evening showers should be pretty sparse, if not gone entirely. then we get to enjoy the dry break as we hit the second half of the weekend. the strongest winds will occur overnight. it's going to be blustery everywhere across the bay area, particularly along the coast. that's where the high wind warning is in effect where winds will be in the 40 to 50-mile-an-hour range, gusts possibly up to 60 miles an hour. the winds will be noticeable even as the rain departs. so 20 to 30-mile-an-hour gusts tomorrow afternoon. then the winds calm down tomorrow evening and tomorrow night. in the sierra this is a good snowmaker, talking about a foot to 2 feet of total snowfall above about 6,000 feet in elevation. the rain/snow line sets up around 5,000 feet, more likely seeing several inches of snow at that le

darren peck is here with a look at what will shape up to be more wet weather coming in just in time for the morning drive. darren? >> that is a very good way to put this, brian. there is more, but in relation to what we had, it's not much more. if you look what's going on on the radar on the far northwest part of the bay area, a few light showers up there, barely anything. that's not the next system. let me show you what the next system looks like. we'll get a wide view from midnight to 6:00 a.m. tomorrow when we'll see the arrival of this next rainmaker to bring widespread rain, but with nowhere near the intensity of the last storm. remember, we're looking at midnight through 6:00 a.m. it keeps going from there. i just wanted to get you to the start of this. this is going to be in the north bay up until sunrise tomorrow. so your morning commute is going to be a wet one up there, but it does continue from that point on. the rain works its way south and goes down the peninsula, gets down to the south bay through the remainder of the afternoon, so just a quick follow-up on that. here's wh

the >>> darren peck joins us now, i felt a little bit of a mist but i miss the 4:00 a.m. sprinkles. you said to drops, and i'm like, oh, i feel a little bit. i do count. >> air-quality was lousy, i will start there. let's go ahead and talk about what happened. we showed as part of the newscast earlier. we will go back to a time lapse from smoke coming off a house fire. this was a story we had earlier in antioch. having covered it from the house fire aspect, when i saw the video i thought there was also an air-quality aspect to this story. the big plume of smoke hits a ceiling, flattens out and doesn't leave. the reason why we have spare the air right now is because they can already see the set up in the atmosphere. this is what high pressure looks like in the atmosphere. and where it meets the top of the inversion, that is the line right there. it's almost like putting dye into the stream. anything below that cap, you will just keep recycling all the same air. and now we are trapping all that stuff in. if we put the wind on here for tomorrow morning at 2:45, this is typically when w

. >>> today, the worst air quality of the season, meteorologist darren peck on what might be behind iti am andrea nakano. video of a truck plowing into a security guard it station and discovery bay, the impact killed one security guard and entered another, authorities say that the driver is a minor. da lin reports. >> reporter: that is the point of impact, a large piece of tarp now covers the security guard station, neighbors say that drivers have hit the structure several times before, but this is the biggest crash. cameras from a tesla captured the fatal crash. a newer model , speeding down and crashed right into the guard station. officers say that the impact killed one security card and caused major injuries to a second guard. the guards have very little time to react. >> i think i heard the guard yelling stop because they had seen a car coming towards them. right before the initial impact. >> reporter: pastor marcus burns identifies the guard killed as one of his longtime parishioners. 62-year-old renee vaccaro, he had known him for about 10 years. >> i had to come out and see wha

. >>> let's go over to first alert meteorologist, darren peck. know, earlier we saw the lightning strikes off the coast. it feels like they're starting to come in? >> you've got to talk about that for a moment. >> okay. >> and the morning that we just had. take a look at what you're standing on. big waves throughout the winter and oftentimes the national weather service will put out the high-surf advisory. green is warning. and so it is a degree higher. there is a high degree of concern of it had one when you look at the wave energy. you can see the big blob of magenta. it is just kind of like throwing that our way. time frame to be aware of this if you have friends and family, and you want to take them to the beaches is now through monday. actually this thing, the warning doesn't expire until tuesday afternoon. we are still aways to come through on tuesday night. so just make sure you're staying very aware if you are taking anybody down to the water. all right, let's get back to the matter at hand that andrea had just mentioned. the live radar o
