elisa raffa is in the cnn weather center. camilla, to you first. i mean, what are you hearing about the extent of damage hey, fred, so you mentioned some of the damage. >> it is the downed trees, the power lines, the power outages. and then, of course, those flipped trees. it is. or excuse me, those flipped cars. it's crazy to think about that when these people are just not used to that in this area. that ef one tornado with recorded winds of up to 90mph at their peak. and so that's what caused a lot of this damage. and that's why today you have a lot of those cleanup efforts and people sort of returning back to normal after the shock of it, because people are just not used to this kind of weather in the bay area, tornadoes are not common. and so officials telling people to stay away from the area where the tornado hit so that they can continue those cleanup efforts. and unfortunately, we do know that several people were taken to the hospital with injuries. a lot of it because of those flipped cars and people just running to try to help whoever was

let's go to elisa raffa al-qaim. elisa i know just seeing that is incredible as they deal with that in california, we also know ice making travel difficult in parts of the east today. so we've got a lot, a lot going on. >> yeah, and the tornado in california has just been so mind boggling. california averages nine tornadoes in the entire year. there are some places in the country where you get that in an entire event. ef one 90 mile per hour winds only on the ground for five minutes. and it did all of that damage that camilla was explaining. here's a look at some of those wind gusts 78mph in monterey, 83 mile per hour gusts in san francisco. and that was part of that tornado warning that was issued for san francisco that has never been issued before. straight line winds of 80mph came through there. not a tornado. we've got this storm that's continuing to move on shore. the one from yesterday kind of exited out. and then we have a new one that's going to prompt a new atmospheric river as we go into the workweek. we're

cnn meteorologist elisa raffa is tracking its path. i mean, it's really harrowing to hear about this woman cat's experience as she saw this tornado touched down. uh, are there any risk areas still, and will there be any relief soon? >> we are still dealing with tornado watches as this same line of storms continues to charge eastward. after today, things will calm down. but we're still not done yet. we have a stretch of tornado watches from charlotte down through savannah, including charleston, columbia, south carolina. all of this until 1:00 this afternoon. as this line continues to move east, the tornado watches stretch down to the panhandle this morning, where we still have some severe thunderstorms. this line, again has just been intense with damaging winds. looks like we have a tornado warning right there in upstate south carolina just to the west there of greenville. we've got this line of severe thunderstorm warnings stretching from greenville, south carolina, all the way down to augusta. this entire line has a push of 60mph dama

cnn's camila bernal is in california at elisa raffa is in the cnn weather center. camilla, let's begin with you. what are you hearing about the extent of the damage from this very rare tornado? there hey, fred, so you mentioned the cleanup efforts. >> that's really what's going on right now because of some of what you saw in the video and what you heard from the residents there winds up to 90mph at its peak during this tornado. so of course, so much potential for downed trees, for downed power lines, power outages, cars that were flipping have been thrown off the road. that's what people there were having to deal with. but the other aspect of all of this is that this is not common in this area. so people just not expecting to deal with an ef one tornado. this was extremely rare and just caught a lot of people off guard, even though of course there was this warning, it's just not something that happens in northern california. so officials telling people to stay away from the area where that tornado hit, specifically as they cleaned up a lot of these cars. we do know

cnn meteorologist elisa raffa joins us now. it looking melissa, we're finally finding these temperatures warm up after the cold snap that we've had since thanksgiving. >> you've got temperatures nearing 60 degrees in saint louis little rock, middle 50s in nashville. we have that arctic air still bottled up in interior new england. but we're really finding temperatures on the uphill climb. you've got this cold air moving out where we have temperatures about 15 to 20 degrees warmer than they were this time yesterday. as we start to thaw out again, what's happening is is that cold snap is starting to exit north and east. you've got warmer air that's coming in and that will send these temperatures on the other side of average. we'll find these highs going into the low 60s. in atlanta, average is 58 degrees. even washington, d.c. getting some temperatures in the 60s above average. there little rock and nashville as well. finding these temperatures on the warmer side of things. look at what happens though. we'll find these temperatur

cnn's elisa raffa joins us now. and alisa, we're talking about a level four out of five threat, but not just small e-f tornadoes three or higher. that's significant. >> strong tornadoes. this is a type of setup that we see in april or may. we are in late december. people really need to stay on alert for the potential for strong, violent tornadoes as we go through the afternoon, evening and even overnight. today it has been active the last couple of days across the gulf coast. i mean, we've already had 14 reports of tornado sightings across the south, and this is the risk for today. so a lot of the same areas under the gun as we go through the afternoon. there's that red level four out of five risk from alexandria, louisiana over towards jackson, mississippi. this is where we could have some strong violent tornadoes, ef3 or greater. these are the type of tornadoes where you need to be in a safe place. you know, interior rooms, basements, storm shelters. again, this could be a very active day for us today. strong torn

meteorologist elisa raffa joining us now. and, elisa, a lot of people on the move today. what do we need to know about travel? >> we've got a couple of problem spots. one in the south where we have showers and storms that will ignite with the afternoon daytime heat and humidity, and then the pacific northwest will be a problem, not just today, but really through a lot of the week. we have an atmospheric river unloading the series of storms. you can see some delays likely today from seattle to portland and even down towards san francisco. we have rain and snow coming on shore along the west coast. we've got a winter alerts in effect where we could find another foot of snow possible in some of the highest elevations, and this could come with winds upwards of 60mph. that would create blowing snow. poor visibility could take down some tree limbs and power lines. so we continue with that rain and snow today. and then like i mentioned, maybe brief lulls, but it continues a series of storms as we go through the weekend. just through friday alone, we're looking at 2 to 4in of rai

cnn's elisa raffa. joining us now with all that's going on and it's not even peak tornado season, i thought that passed. >> typically we get outbreaks like this in april and may. so to see an outbreak to this caliber in december is rare. we can get tornadoes in spring and in winter, but really need to stay on guard for some violent weather, likely later on this afternoon and evening. these are the reports already that we've had over the last 48 hours. 14 tornado reports. and as we go through the day, you can see the area at risk is pretty similar. some of the same areas could get beat up again. here's a look though. this is a moderate level four out of five severe risk. we're not just talking about a couple of tornadoes. we're talking about a couple of strong tornadoes, violent tornadoes possible from alexandria, louisiana, over towards jackson, mississippi, even stretching into parts of alabama, even in the orange area that stretches towards birmingham, we could be looking at some strong tornadoes. the

a cnn meteorologist elisa raffa has more on that storm, and a new one that's expected to hit the western. this week. >> we had an incredibly active weekend of weather in california. >> we had an ef one tornado confirmed in scotts valley that sits about an hour south of san francisco. we had 90 mile per hour winds in that twister, and it was able to snap trees, downed power lines and overturned cars, injuring some people. now, this is incredibly rare for the bay area. i mean, we're talking only nine tornadoes on average happen a year in california. the storm was so powerful, we had winds up at 78mph in monterey, 83 mile per hour gusts at the san francisco airport that was clocked during a tornado warning that was triggered in the san francisco bay area. their first ever tornado warning in history. no tornado was confirmed out of this, but those 80 mile per hour gusts did do some damage to trees and power lines there as well. that storm working its way east. but we have another one that's already on its way in, and atmospheric river will develop as we go into the week. so more rain and sno

this is cnn i'm meteorologist elisa raffa and you're in the cnn newsroom. >> we've been watching icyditions in the midwest all day today. you can see many states included in the winter weather advisories. but in that deeper purple, that's an ice storm warning for parts of eastern iowa where we have had some significant icing, a lot of roads there are completely covered in ice. ottumwa has had more than a third of an inch of ice. you've had a quarter of an inch of ice from cedar rapids, iowa, even parts of illinois as well. totals like this. when it comes to ice will line the streets, the tree limbs, the power lines cause some problems and really create some dangerous travel conditions. you can see where we still have that pocket of ice over davenport headed up towards dubuque as well. and that's because these temperatures have been borderline. when they flirt with freezing, that's where you get the icing conditions, right. it's not quite warm enough for rain, not quite cold enough for snow. so it's 31 degrees right now in davenport, 31 also in dubuque. and again, that's where you hav

cnn's elisa raffa explains the weather system that led to these very different conditions across theea. >> downtown san francisco had its first ever tornado warning issued early on saturday. we've got a powerful storm coming onshore and it was able to have enough moisture instability to create some twist in the atmosphere, and that's what triggered this tornado warning early on saturday that included downtown san francisco. you can see that twist or that rotation coming in off the pacific ocean and then cutting across the san francisco bay area. now, even without the tornado warning, the storm has been so powerful, it has been picking up gusts 83mph at the san francisco international airport, one of their strongest gusts on record. monterey 78mph. a lot of areas with gusts over 65mph. and again, that's just the breadth of how powerful this storm is. we get a little bit of a break going into sunday, but we have another powerful storm that comes on shore as we start out the workweek. so the winds will pick up again and so will the rain and even the snow. we're going to tack on more sno

footage capturing the rare sound of thunder snow over copenhagen, new york, yesterday meteorologist elisa raffa. joining me right now. so it's rare. that's why i've never heard it before. but it is a thing. >> that is how dynamic this lake effect snow can be. basically, the cold air is picking up the moisture. the air is rising so much, so fast that it acts like a thunderstorm creates static, and you get thunder and lightning. wow. me today? yeah, we've been geeking out in the weather center for sure, but i mean, look, the lake effect snow bands have not really moved since thursday they continue over the great lakes i-90 has just been a mess from cleveland up through erie just south of buffalo where you have whiteout conditions because again, this is a wind driven snow. so you have visibility that drops to a quarter mile or less, causing the whiteout conditions, making things very treacherous. i-81 near watertown, another spot where they would be dangerous, travel on the roads because these totals are already over three feet, are approaching four feet, and we actually did just get one total ove

cnn's elisa raffa is tracking all of this for you, alisa. tornadoes in december is not something that i'm generally familiar with, but where are the biggest concerns right now? >> yeah, on the rare side for sure. and we could be looking at some pretty strong tornadoes as we go into tomorrow. so problem spots across the south because of that, the pacific northwest has continued to be a problem spot from seattle to portland and san francisco because of an atmospheric river, rain, snow, gusty winds have really just been nonstop and that continues through the weekend as well. the severe storm threat across the south is not too terrible today, but really ramps up going into tomorrow. we have a level three out of five enhanced risk from eastern louisiana across parts of mississippi. that's where we can find damaging winds, large hail and strong tornadoes. likely we're talking ef two or greater. and then this risk starts to shift east as we go through the rest of the weekend. now you're mentioning december tornadoes again, not that not that common.

and then we're going to reassess based on the snowfall from there our meteorologist, elisa raffa, is tracking the latest conditions from the cnn weather center. >> and alisa, i know temperatures are expected to plummet this week and it's for a lot of america. >> yeah. and it lasts really through the workweek. we'll find temperatures well below average. this is the lake effect snow that really hasn't stopped since thursday night. these bands of of cold that come off of the lakes picking up the moisture and get all of that snow to pump. and i want to point out oh, wait, there it is off of lake huron. we actually have some lightning bolts that are starting to come up in this band too. that's kind of over canada. that is how dynamic these snow bands have been. we've had thunder snow. you get so much lifted, the cold, moist air, it starts to act like a thunderstorm and you get thunder and lightning. cleveland with some heavy snow bands coming across right now, i-90 has been a mess near erie southern suburbs of buffalo, where they're about to do a game. a bills game here in a couple of hou

cnn's elisa raffa is tracking this new weather threat just in time for that holiday travel, huh? >> yeah, and ice storms are so dangerous because it's hard to see. >> you know, where that ice is accumulating. it can me look like. not a lot, but it's incredibly slick. so here are the alerts across the midwest. the core of the ice storm warning for parts of east and southeast iowa from waterloo, waterloo down to ottumwa, davenport, the quad cities where we've had ice accumulation more than a quarter inch. again, it's a quarter inch of just ice on trees, on roads, on power lines. that gets heavy. it weighs things down, causes some problems, especially if there's some wind involved as well. so ottumwa, uh, over a third of an inch there of some of that ice. you can see the rain and there's all that pink where you have some of that warmer air upstairs in the atmosphere that's able to melt some of that. what would be snow into some of that ice and get you that freezing rain deals with borderline temperatures when you're kind of borderline around freezing. it's 29 degrees in davenport, 3
