wind rapidly wrapping around towards the radar site, which is right up there on the top of mount eminem. the brighter red is the wd rushing away from the radar. so if you can imagine a tube of air rotating there, what you have is an area of rotation detected by that radar beam higher up. now that may not mean that there's an actual tornado happening below, but it can be the first indicator and sometimes enough to issue a tornado warning. and that was the case for san francisco. you had those areas of rotation offshore, those areas known as velocity couplets, enough for a tornado warning. but for san francisco, those areas weakened on approach. it was the opposite effect here. for scotts valley, you had that area of rotation tighten up. after it crossed the coast, you also had a hook echo showing up on the reflectivity or rain mode on radar. both of those aspects are usually enough to trigger a tornado warning. now, it's important to point out this ef1 that happened in scotts valley only lasted for five minutes, so it was a very narrow window to get that warning out for this particular s
