i want to thank the haas family, the oakland organization, the city of oakland and all your beautiful fans for supporting m. in 1991, rickey henderson shared these words at the oakland coliseum after he broke the mlb record for most stolen bases of all time. known as the man of steel. he wound up stealing a staggering 1406 bases by the end of his career, which spanned nine teams and 25 years, with 14 of those seasons in the green and gold. henderson was born in chicago, but was raised in oakland, where he was a star high school running back. first time i ever heard of rickey henderson. it was actually when he was in high school playing football at oakland tech. but henderson turned down football scholarships to sign with the athletics. in 1976. friend and former teammate bip roberts, who also grew up in oakland, said henderson inspired a generation of athletes in the town. that's the impact he had on all of us as players. we wanted to be like rickey. if we could be like rickey, we could make it to the big leagues, and if we could make it to the big leagues, then it's a dream come true
