and at the beginning of they had a view, rosalynn comes in, he wants give rosalynn a copy of the questions and tell her to go in another room and answer because that would save time. and i said, please, i want to i want to have you here together. and and rosalynn started telling me, talking about ted kennedy, whom i think she loves terribly, might have recovered from it. but then she so she started telling me something about ted kennedy that jimmy didn't want her to tell. so just gives her a stern look and rosa, he only has hour and rosalynn gave him a stern look back and proceeded to tell the story and. boy, was that informative about the kind of stuff i was trying to learn. i could i could give other stories, too. but we ran short of to whenever i would get the second hour and, i was running out of questions, you know, and he was still the library when they visit. but right before i left my office and and start at the university had a graduate student in my office name is ken vickers. and i said, ken, what would you like me to ask you, jimmy, you know, just kind of joking and ken said, w

rosalynn: yes. the upstairs has a hall all the way down with rooms on the side and the dining room was icon of across from the bedroom and a kitchen that i think jackie kennedy had ranged. before the president appear families wept downstairs. it was not the big state dining room but were more form. some of them we were told the eisen hours ate off tv trays but when jackie was there with babies she had a kitchen put up stairs and that was just normal. i see chip is dressed up. that is not always normal. >> the tree house and looks like you are facing amy on -- chasing amy on. president carter: i don't remember the chase. amy was a typical 9-year-old child who went to the public schools and bring classmates home. she wanted a tree house so i designed it and they wouldn't let us nail it on to the tree so i had to do it so it was self-supporting but she would spend nights up there with the friend and grand sons would spend all night with her in the tree house. amy was only 13 when we left the white hous

and by the way, on the on the rosalynn. i mean, that's another example of the cultural reconciliation that carter kind of symbolized, someone who came from such a traditional background and religious upbringing, but yet with, with with a wife who really kind of pioneered or took another step toward the role of a more assertive and visible first lady as we were living through all of those changes in kind of gender relations in the, in the 1970s. so he really kind of panoramically did that. i think politically, as i said, carter was kind of the one moment of interruption in what had been what was republican dominance of the white house in every election from 1968 through 1992. and he was someone, i think, in advance, you know, 15 years ahead of bill clinton, who saw the need to try to modernize the party's message and appeal. he was more fiscally conservative, for example, than democrats had been, even as he was, you know, quite progressive, as jeff was saying on some of the issues, like the environment and civil rights. and

him and miss rosalynn was like that.ry time i sit down with them in their living room, wanting to serve other people, even when they were down and pastor, i mean, he's famously, you know, gave a sermons continued to, i think, at sunday school or to to teach or occasionally give sermons. >> what were those like? i talked to a friend of his last night who said that, you know, at times when you heard a sermon from him or a lesson from him, it almost sounded like he made it come to life. it almost sounded like he had experienced it personally. >> oh, absolutely. and, anderson, one of the things that he would do at the end of every, every one of his messages in sunday school that he would challenge people to take the word of god that he was teaching them and go back out and do something. do something for your neighbors. serve somebody. don't just hear the word, but take the word outside of the church. and that was one of the most remarkable things for him to do. of course, he just didn't teach sunday school down in plains. he

rosalynn carter january 20th, 1977. what do you remember about that day?it was inauguration day and we walked down pennsylvania avenue in the cold, cold weather. it was exciting. whose idea was it to walk? it was jimmy's idea. he didn't tell me to the night before. point man didn't tell anybody else except the secret service agents, because we didn't. well, the secret service agents didn't want him to for security, but they didn't want him to talk walk at all. but i guess he just thought it was better. nobody was anticipating him walking down pennsylvania avenue. i think he thought everything would be different if if they believed him, maybe, uh, if we, maybe we shouldn't do it. if everybody knew it, you know? anyway, it was, it was. it was really wonderful. so, january 20th, 1977, you're the first lady of the united states. how do you prepare to become first lady? well, becoming first, the hard part for me was going from the farm supply business to the governor's mansion, a beautiful governor's mansion. it was new, but the outgoing governor had only lived

she served as first lady rosalynn carter's projects director in the white house. she's a carter center trustee. i don't know what you think about it, but that letter, i think, is a letter anyone would want to receive. and, you know, we see in there these two people who are really partners in every sense of the word. can you give us a little window into their relationship? >> you know what's so amazing about that letter is that most people don't really understand or see jimmy carter as a romantic, and yet his he, he was very much a romantic. and his deep love for rosalynn from the day they were married also was fundamentally embedded in his respect for her as a full partner and human being. um, as i think about president mrs. carter and the time that i have spent with them, it was such a huge privilege for me to serve in the administration and then to continue to work with them to help build the carter center into the human rights organization that it is today, and later to become good friends. and as i think about some of the time that we spent together as good fr

he and rosalynn lived in. in the same house most of their lives.m, what do you think it was about? about that place that was so part of them? >> i think he felt like he was just part of the community. and just like one of us. and, uh, like i said before, he didn't forget us. he worked very hard with our better home committe. and committee to help develop a motel here, a hotel here, and a and, you know, also, he's going to be buried here. and it was very deliberate move to keep people coming by to visit. uh, on his part, even in death, he never forgot the town. >> so that's important. that was important to him. that plains, georgia, continue and thrive in the future. >> that's right. very important to him. it really was. >> he's still i mean, they attended the same church. he was still teaching sunday school for for a long time, um, until he got until he got sick. >> got sick. he did. we enjoyed. we had, uh, several hundred people almost every sunday come by to listen. and he took time after the church to take pictures with these people and just mak
