northbound 101 in san bruno. an hour and a half ago here. and traffic is going to be slow. let's put up on the map here. northbound 101, approaching 380. it's between 380 and south airport boulevard. and here's a live picture of the scene. chp still has most of the lanes closed. you're getting by on the extreme right hand side. the traffic is going to be busy as you drive through. people are squeezing by there. so again this is between 380 and south airport. and when you come up the peninsula you're going to see that squeeze there. it's just going to get worse as the morning wears on. this is a pretty popular commute route into san francisco. i think the alternate route will be 280. if you want to avoid all of this. let's talk about getting into san francisco from the east bay. it's backed up almost to the maze. not quite. you will see the traffic here is doing okay. highway four slowing out of antioch this morning, just west of antioch. there, or just right at the boundary of antioch and pittsburgh, all the way

i'm guessing this is atop the san bruno. yeah, san bruno mountain. it got good rinse cycle this morning, and it's been chilly outside. we've had highs only in the low to mid 50s out there. rain around the bay area. but right now, speaking of our storm ranger mobile doppler radar, here is the scan atop san bruno mountain. starting to see a little bit of a break. and you did see from the vantage point of our mobile x-band doppler radar truck, we're starting to see patchy fog settling into the bay as the rain now starts to head off to the south and east. there's the last of it now, moving away from morgan hill in behind it. however, a lot of moisture, but really not a lot of wind tonight, which could set the stage, i think, for some patchy dense fog moving forward into tomorrow morning's commute. so notice the cloudy skies. they break up a little bit, but here's what we're watching tomorrow morning for areas around the east bay valleys, north bay valleys. and there's some signs, even down through the santa clara valley could be seeing some dense fog. an

as we take this live look outside storm ranger doing a lot of work this morning atop san bruno mountain. you can see the camera shaking a little bit. it is windy up there. we have been seeing torrential pouring rain this morning. we hope you are somewhere warm and dry and safe. we want to thank you so much for starting your saturday morning with us. i'm kirklapper cinthia pimentel has a quick look at our microclimate forecast. a lot going on. on the drive in this morning i saw lightning. oh my goodness what a morning here. and people in san francisco and san mateo counties starting to bring the heart rate down after being woken up by that blaring from the emergency tone, that tornado warning that expired at 615. but here's what we are starting to notice here. as we move the loop backwards in time, you see these areas of the darker oranges and the reds. those are just the brief hints at that hook echo. so tornado warnings being picked up by the radar. nothing was confirmed, but it was gathering all the elements strong winds, heavy rains, and just minor rotation that i'm noting here. as w

and we do have a beautiful sunrise that we can see for now from san bruno mountain. that's our mobile doppler radar. it's parked high above san francisco, where we're getting the best view of all the rain that's coming down in the north bay. but let's talk about how much we've already measured. nearly six inches of rainfall fell between friday night and saturday morning with that last storm that we had, and in marin we had over four inches of rainll, santa rosa three and two for san francisco and sunnyvale. and many of us had rainfall totals like this, anywhere from an inch and a half to two inches of rainfall. and here we go again with another round this morning. and it's been pretty heavy in some spots where we see the reds on storm ranger, that's the heaviest rainfall and it continues to slowly push its way farther off towards the south and east, while making it so sloppy in the north bay, where we're already more than double our normal amount of rainfall for the water year, and we are getting another round. so that's going to quickly cause some puddling and stand

one is in south city, north of san bruno, north 101. all lanes remain blocked with this fatal investigation is underway. they are detouring traffic off to south airport boulevard and onto 380 to el camino. right now, el camino is looking pretty good, but as we go through the morning, that's going to get pretty jammed. look at all the color there. the only color that's good is green. everything else means very, very slow. so avoid that area if you can. we have another fatal blocking three of four lanes. this one is eastbound 80 at american canyon. injuries and as i mentioned another fatality. so this is going to be quite some time to clear as well. >> all right sue thank you. and as you're waking up this morning we have been tracking breaking news out of southern california, a big fire is burning in malibu. the franklin fire broke out around 11:00 last night. it exploded in size due to extreme winds in the area. and it is already more than 1800 acres. you're looking at video from earlier. we do want to take a live look now at the scene o

. >> i saw what it did in san bruno.ious. >> police had the same thought, remembering the pipeline explosion in 2010 that killed eight people. >> when i received a call, the first thing i thought of was san bruno. that is the worst case scenario, which is what obviously we're trying to avoid. and based on the gas leak and the plume location of the maps, we knew that 12,500 was a moderate amount of residents that we needed to evacuate for safety precautions. >> police captain ali khan says sunday's leak was the best case scenario, and something police trained for. pg and e says the initial call for a gas smell came in around four in the morning. crews were out there by 430, but they couldn't cap the gas line until nine. >> what we've learned is it's a six inch gas line that is in the flood control panel of washington and lewelling. the positive news is because of the rain, where the gas leak is actually underwater. so it is fuming from under the water, which has helped us in the amount of evacuation we've had to do. >> pg

this is on 101 in san bruno near sfo. traffic alert in effect. unfortunately, this is a deadly crash and one person did die in this crash. a vehicle possibly hit a pedestrian there and we're still getting more details but there's an investigation underway and traffic is backed up in the area. in the meantime a bit difficult to access some of the exit routes over towards sfo. 380 might be a bit hard to access as well off 101. just keep that in mind if you taking northbound 101 right at that 380 exit. you are going to see that closure in effect there. 280, looking pretty good if you want to use that as an alternate route. el camino will work as well to work your way over towards sfo. but if you have got an early flight to catch. keep that in mind this morning. all right, other than this there's a couple of other spots going on. headed on 80 eastbound out of vallejo. we have a trouble spot there. >>> 49ers hoping for back-to-back victories for a chance at the playoffs. vern glenn is coming up wi (♪♪) make the most of your season during the kia seaso

light rain at times we're seeing it here in our storm ranger mobile doppler radar scanning from san bruno mountain. you're seeing that rain around downtown san jose and just to the northwest of morgan hill, a little more here offshore. a lot of cloud cover spilling towards the bay area. that's going to keep us under the cloudy skies and some rain at times, especially for the second half of the day tomorrow. so tomorrow morning we wake up to the fog and light showers, kind of like we have outside right now. mostly cloudy skies through the afternoon. high temperatures tomorrow in the low 60s around san jose, upper 50s san francisco to oakland, and by 3:00 in the afternoon, we should begin to see the steadier and heavier rain. probably the biggest of the weekend, coming in right around 6:00 for areas north of san francisco tomorrow evening by 8:00 through the central bay and south bay, and then some partial clearing as we head into sunday night. top rain totals with this weather system coming in for sunday will be in the north bay, where we could see a half inch of rain, but noticeably less

if i put this a bit further south, look at san francisco, daly city, bruno san bruno mountain area still kind of dry for san jose. so this will pick up overnight. and i want to show you what areas we can expect to see for tomorrow. so we mentioned that high surf advisory right now wave heights 15 to 16ft. by tomorrow we could see some of those reach 20 to 30ft. and then of course i mentioned that flood advisory. and here's what we're looking at right now. so this initially included just parts of the north bay. but now we're seeing san francisco and oakland also included this. we could see an additional maybe half an inch to a little under an inch overnight. but because these areas are already soaked, there could be the possibility of some minor flooding. so we're going to monitor the timing of this in the next couple of hours stretching into friday. and i'll show you how that will bring impacts as well into your weekend forecast coming up in just a few minutes. all right. vianey. thank you. and vianey just mentioned it. another round of high surf could lead to a second round of dangerous

walnut creek, fremont and san jose, along with our nbc bay area storm ranger atop san bruno mountain. it's continuing to search for rain with its exclusive radar. i'm here now with meteorologist vianey arana with where the rain is coming down right now, and vianey what we can expect the next few hours. well, we've got that kind of light to moderate feel going on, but certainly enough to bring some slickness to the roads. so that's going to continue in the next couple of hours. and as far as advisories and warnings and things like that, we are expecting to see some coastal flood advisory in place that is going to also bring on those king tides around high tide. so if you look at satellite radar, you can see alsohat's building out in the pacific. so i'm going to zoom this in a bit closer. in addition to rain you're also seeing a lot of blues and pinks here. we're talking about sierra snow. there is a winter weather advisory in effect. and of course i want to zoom in using our mobile doppler radar stormranger so we can really hone in where the only ones that have it here in the bay area,

our exclusive mobile doppler radar on top of san bruno mountain. rain pushing in through the heart of the bay up towards the north bay. it did start out there this morning, but it is starting to become a little bit more spotty, a little bit heier as you move right now through vallejo, parts of the 680, but still remaining dry through most of the south bay. we see that line of showers starting to push on through and through parts of los gatos. now, it's not going to ruin our weekend. it will be spotty, so just carry that umbrella in the car and a jacket as we time it out, hour by hour for you seeing some of that activity dying down as we go on into 1011 this morning lunchtime, you can expect some spotty showers through parts of the peninsula, oakland, up towards fairfield and vacaville and down into the south bay. maybe some light rain as we go on into three 4:00 this afternoon. the other thing that i talked about at the top of the hour was that dangerous surf that is coming in the next couple of days, with all of that energy pushing on with the atm
