in addition to very strong winds, burbank had a gas to a 130 kilometers per hour their strongest on record. they've never seen a gust over one o 7. and so when you factor in extreme wins, extremely dry air. hot temperatures and a lack of recent rainfall is no surprise. we're getting such the high end and potentially deadly events. while yes, as you were saying there, the weather does seem to be exacerbating these fire conditions. and of course, january is not a typical time of year for wild fires, but the region is also no stranger to large scale fires. so the question is, could the scale of damage have been prevented in any way? so it's really tricky to say, i think in this case it's simply a matter of an expanding footprint in southern california. fires are part of the landscape fires a part of the ecosystem. it happens every few years. but when you start building bigger and bigger and bigger cities, you're going to have more potential for damage, loss and casualties. in this case however, you have very densely packed in neighborhoods with no real brakes for fire to stop that. and so in

it's nice to show you a calm wind out toward lax and single digits out toward burbank and santa ana and ontario. now the fire weather watch. this begins saturday afternoon into saturday evening. excuse me, into sunday afternoon, and this will likely be a red flag fire warning. so winds could be gusting to over 40 miles an hour and up in the mountains, maybe some gusts approaching 60 to 70 miles an hour. showing you this the wind forecast model. once again the headline tonight into tomorrow morning. somewhat of a break. but look what happens throughout the day on saturday. those winds do pick up. you can see the malibu hillside here. this is saturday 6 p.m. and then late saturday and into sunday. definitely. those winds are a big factor. so this will be a noticeable uptick in those wind speeds into a sunday morning and then backing off a bit. in fact, a change in the wind flow off the ocean that will be later in the day on sunday and unfortunately, possibly another stronger wind event that could be monday and into tuesday. so the winds are not going away. we just have a short term break

and at the burbank airport, it was 83, in the chino hills, 77. and we even had some very high wind gusts in the north bay at mount saint helena. and so we take a look at what the conditions were, as we're still seeing those santa ana winds that remain gusty through tomorrow morning. but it's also been very d, only measuring 0.16in of rain since october 1st, as well as the poor air quality. so people in the area, of course, of the fires have to wear an n95 masks. but when we compare the rainfall that we've had in northern california in the north bay, santa rosa has measured 26.07in of rainfall since the water year began, which is double the normal value. but for la, it's only 4% of average. as we talked about going back to the start of the water year, it will be very dry and continued the breezy winds into the afternoon 40, 50, 60 mile per hour winds throughout the day. and then looking at more of those winds into tomorrow morning, still remaining at about 20mph here in the bay areas fairly calm in the valleys, but some of our hills and mountains

burbank was gusting over 80mph.o you notice this morning those winds are not reaching the valley floor. they're staying in those typical santa ana wind corridors this morning. but still the fire risk is critical. that's the red shading you see on your screen across much of southern california. what you don't notice is this pink, purplish color that we had yesterday, that extreme fire risk. so the fire risk is a little lower today. but still those winds are active this morning. the winds remain active throughout the morning and early afternoon. but once that red flag warning does expire right around 6:00 pm, those winds are much calmer. the humidity will be on the rise, and that will be a much better weather pattern for the rest of the week. so we're almost through this fire danger just with us. for the next 12 hours across southern california. we'll head north back here at home, a live look from sutro tower. we have clear skies out there. it's another cold morning with temperatures in the 30s and low 40s. first thin

burbank malibu hills, over 80 miles an hour. just extreme wind there. montecito closer to santa barbara, 69 miles an hour. even closer to the coast. huntington beach at 51 miles an hour. so you can see the location of these two fires first will come in closer to show you the current conditions around the palisades fire. right now, you can see winds out of the north and northeast, 27 miles an hour, gusting to 39. the relative humidity. it's coming down to around 24%. also checking out the eaton fire as we move closer to pasadena and altadena. and right now temperatures in the lower 60s. look at that wind gust of over 60 miles an hour at a site closer to that fire zone. so as a result, we are seeing extreme fire behavior that on top of this seasonal rainfall for lax only 0.03 going back to october 1st, that is only 0.7% of average. so extremely dry, extremely windy. the red flag warning is in place today, tomorrow and into thursday. and unfortunately we're seeing those strong damaging winds and very dry air mass setting up around 8 to 15%. so very strong

burbank airport, 83, chino hills 77. and then back here in the bay area locally. we got into some gusty winds this morning. mount saint helena up to 68. but these winds in southern california, they weren't just a one time thing, as we've been mentioning. this was for several hours on end, which is making this firefight pretty much impossible. so as we take you down to those current conditions here, we're tracking the two largest fires. we have the eaton canyon fire near altadena, also the palisades fire down here, the palisades fire, where we had winds of 80 to 90mph last night. it's now 15 to 35, so at least we're out of that highest threshold, but still very, very dry. hard to get in there. this will just continue with at least 15,000 acres burned up here towards the eaton canyon fire winds right now 15 to 35. this area last night also saw 70 to 80 mile per hour gusts. so the wind is down in this location from just about 12 hours ago. and the way the winds blowing looks like that fire would stay more in the ridge tops here above pasadena and above glendora. if i
