[music] a colorful display of chinese culture and artistry. a troupe from lion dance me greeted mayor daniel lurie as he arrived at the historic far east restaurant in chinatown for the inauguration night banquet. he lit 100,000 firecrackers. they are symbols of good luck. >> how are you doing? >> inside, i caught up with the new mayor as he went from table to table, greeting members of the asian community credited with helping him get into office. mayor, will you describe the feeling you have right no

chinatown for 45 years and she was happy to see so many people visiting her neighborhood, but she was also happy to see so many of her neighbors coming out to vote in the november presidential election. >> they're in the 80s, 90-year-old, old lady, old man. they all came out to vote because the way it is happening in america, it's going downhill, for example, with the crime rate going up. >> reporter: winky is a proud supporter of donald trump and it looks like she has a lot of company in the asian community. the city's republican party is reporting a huge swell in registrations of people from asian countries since the pandemic. that's quite a turnaround from 2020 when trump was being blamed for inciting asian hate crimes against chinese elders. >> america has become less hospitable to immigrants and refugees. right now asians are told to go back to china, the wuhan virus or the chinese virus. >> reporter: but that was then. this is now. >> what i see is that regular citizen like i, we are all fed up with the corruption here in san francisco and also in california. we are all fed up.

it was a ghost town in chinatown. i figured it's time to shoot chinatown store front nobody. everybody on grand avenue. there was not a soul out walking around chinatown. a new asia restaurant, it used to be the biggest restaurant in chinatown. it can hold about a 1,000 people and i had been shooting events there for many years. it turned into a supermarket. and i got in. i shot the supermarket. you know, and its transformation. even the owner of the restaurant the restaurant, it's 50 years old. i said, yeah. it looks awful. history. because i'm shooting history. and it's impressive because it's history because you can't repeat. it's gone it's gone. >> you stick with her, she'll teach you everything. >> cellphone photography, that's going to be the generation. i think cellphones in the next two, three years, the big cameras are obsolete already. mirrorless camera is going to take over market and the cellphone is going to be better. but nobody's going to archive it. nobody's going to keep good history. everybody's going to take snapshots, but nobody's going to catalog. they do

san francisco's chinatown is bustling as it prepares to ring in the new year, the year of the snake.week from today. organizers of this year's chinese new year celebrations all say excitement already building. community leaders say chinatown is starting to see an economic comeback in this time of year typically brings an influx of money to the businesses. san francisco police are also hard at work, learning from recent tragedies to make celebrations as safe as possible. the festivities will culminate with the parade on february 15th. >> finally, getting back to that pre-pandemic energy that we had. i think the parade this year is going to be unbelievable. >> and city leaders are reminding people that the parade is the same weekend as the nba all star game at the chase center, so they're advising people who want to attend either or both events. if you're lucky enough to use public transit to avoid all the traffic in the city that weekend next month. all right. that's it for us tonight at 11 mornings on two. coming up at 4:00 in the morning. and of course, don't forget to stream the la

i didn't i'm so upset though, because that is one of my favorite places in chinatown.t would you have gotten? they are really known for their barbecue pork rolls. sounds good, sounds good. all right, well, bridging generations, you're taking a look at it. this was the goal of today's lunar new year celebration in san jose. the event was hosted by the vietnamese american roundtable. the event featured the traditional lunar new year activities like food and firecrackers, but organizers say this is also about teaching the community about the history of vietnamese people in the south bay. we're really acknowledging and paying homage to 2025, marking the 50th anniversary of the end of the vietnam war. a lot of our parents and grandparents came here as refugees and immigrants after 1975, and for us as a younger generation, this year's theme is bridging generations. and so we're really trying to hope, really being able to bring people out and just hold a space for community to learn more about their, their culture. and the event is just one of the festivals planned in san jos

chinatown after a tight inauguration day scheduleor the new mayor, daniel lurie. i'm feeling very calm. i'm feeling like, okay, it is a new era here in san francisco, one that is going to be defined not only by change, but accountability. that's what he told a crowd of roughly 800 inside the banquet room of far east cafe on grant. centering the aapi community. this community is what powers our city. in a tight and sometimes chaotic squeeze for supporters and dignitaries, including sfpd chief bill scott, who talked about the mayor's new plan, he announced during his inauguration speech an emergency declaration to combat the fentanyl crisis. i definitely feel that there's a lot more progress that will be made. you know, we'll see with the emergency order. when that happens, it can speed things up. attorney general rob bonta also says he will work with the mayor to perhaps bring special resources for law enforcement to tackle the crisis. we can bring those to bear here in san francisco to work on tackling some of the organized criminal groups involved in peddling fen
