i'm dan ashley. you're watching a special edition of abc seven news at 11. as we count down to the new year, we have team coverage tonight from new year's celebrations across the bay area. and we're tracking your fireworks forecast as well. we'll begin with abc seven news reporter j.r. stone live in san francisco with the crowds ready for the midnight fireworks display. j.r. happy new year. >> a happy new year to you, dan. you can smell the street dogs out here. the crowds have gotten bigger and bigger over the course of the last few hours. and i want you to go off over my shoulder here. and you can see all of the people on the south side of the ferry building. this is one of the best spots when it comes to seeing those fireworks that will go off at midnight. and boy, we still got a couple of hours or a little less than a couple of hours, but come midnight it will be shoulder to shoulder. in this area. it is already been a busy day here in san francisco. exercising is key for five and a half year olds like alia. we're trying to stay awake long enough to see

i'm dan ashley and i'm dion lim. >> images of that firestorm across los angeles county. simply devastating. >> so for the very latest, let's get to abc seven news anchor karina nova, who is tracking the fires and the battle for firefighters are raging. karina. >> dan, it's hard to capture the magnitude of the fire still burning in the los angeles area. firefighters are currently battling five fires. the biggest devastated the palisades area between santa monica and malibu. the deadliest is on the other side of los angeles, near pasadena. at least five people have died in the eaton fire. it began in the hills near pasadena, but the wind took the embers miles away into the urban core of altadena. it's burned more than 10,000 acres with no containment yet. officials now estimate 200 to 500 structures were destroyed so far. businesses along lake avenue have burned, including several restaurants, dry cleaners, a hardware store, and a senior center. >> it makes me really sad to see such a beautiful neighborhood just get taken away in an instant. my mom and i were here at 5:00

. >> and i'm dan ashley. thanks for joining us. this comes amid the trump administration's threats of potential mass deportations. >> abc seven news reporter louis pena sat down with the superintendent to talk about the measures being taken to protect and inform families. >> schools are no longer off limits for federal immigration agents to arrest undocumented immigrants, a shift that has created fear inside the classrooms and outside during pickup times. >> all of our families and students are hypersensitive to anyone that they suspect to be law enforcement. >> last week, the department of homeland security revoked a 2011 policy that restricted immigration agents from conducting raids on what they classified as sensitive areas, which include churches and schools. even before schools became a target, the san francisco unified school district began to prepare. >> so we actually have provided trainings and information to all of our site leaders over the last several weeks. in preparation for this. >> we sat down with sfusd superinten

i'm ama daetz and i'm dan ashley. >> thanks for joining us. new before and after pictures are capturing this wildfire disaster in a heartbreaking way. this aerial view of malibu beach shows only smoke and rubble left behind in a lot of these neighborhoods. >> the folks who live there also work in that neighborhood, which means they've lost their home and their livelihood. >> now the national guard has moved in to help with the wildfire response. more than 600 troops are on the ground right now, and hundreds more are standing by. >> in total, more than 35,000 acres have been destroyed. there were six fires and four of them continue to burn. the palisades and eden fires have driven the highest level of destruction. more than 12,000 structures have been damaged or completely decimated so far. >> let's take a live look from the skies of the devastation. actually, we zoom right in on those flames. fire crews nationwide have come in to help battle the flames. and really, just to save countless homes. 11 people are now confirmed dead, and authorities

good evening, i'm dan ashley. >> and i'm j.r. stone. the abc seven news i-team has been looking into the judge's reasoning in this case. >> and our dan noyes was in court this morning and is here now with the story. dan. >> well dan and j.r. san francisco da brooke jenkins took this case very seriously instead of the general felonies unit. she signed this to a major crimes prosecutor and pushed for a two year state prison sentence. it didn't work. unlike judges in past hearings for repeat car burglar robert sonza, san francisco superior court judge bruce e chan denied our request for a camera in the courtroom at today's hearing for video or still pictures, and he went through with his offer in exchange for guilty pleas to five felonies receiving stolen property, accessory after the fact, possession of a firearm by a felon, concealed firearm in a vehicle, possession of ammunition. sansa will be released after less than four months in county jail. severe with sansa's history of re-offending. how is this proper? >> i said what i had to say

. >> and i'm dan ashley. thanks for joining us. bloomingdale's was the last remaining anchor store at san francisco center. >> but as abc seven news reporter tim johns joins us live to explain, the store will be closing at the end of march. tim. >> dan. that's right. now, it's difficult to overstate just how significant this closure is for the san francisco center. bloomingdale's is the mall's largest remaining tenant and occupies over 300,000ft■!s of retail space here at the center. now, the store has operated here for almost two decades and is the company's second largest location after its store in new york. as a part of its closure announcement, bloomingdale's cited the shifting retail landscape as well as its so-called evolving strategies for its future operations. now, as you guys can imagine, news of the store's closure has come as a shock to many customers here. we spoke to one woman who told us she's frustrated. >> i love bloomingdale's, i'm going to be sad because i don't know where another one is at. so probably in san j

. >> and i'm dan ashley. thanks for joining us. so far, the winds have been slightly milder than originally forecast, but the big test will be overnight when the wind threat is expected to create a particularly dangerous situation. those words according to the national weather service. >> so here is the latest on the fires. at least 25 people are dead and that number is expected to rise. more than 20 people remain missing between the palisades and eaton fires. authorities have made dozens of arrests in the fire zones for things ranging from looting to flying drones and fire zones and attempted arson. >> and here's a look at the size of the two largest and most active fires. the palisades fire has burned more than 23,000 acres and remains 17% contained, while the eaton fire has burned more than 14,000 acres and is 35% contained. but fortunately, the footprint of both fires has not grown in the past 24 hours. >> and since many residents still aren't allowed in the fire zones, crews from cal fire's damage inspection team have been ass

i'm dan ashley. >> and i'm ama daetz. the fake red zones are also confusing residents because of the state's new day lighting law. >> and as abc seven news reporter tim johns explains, the san francisco municipal transportation agency says the problem is really expensive to fix. >> walk down balboa street in san francisco's richmond neighborhood, and you can't help but notice several newly painted red curbs. the only problem the san francisco municipal transportation agency says many of them are fake, painted red by an unknown person or people. >> it's extremely inappropriate, and i don't think it's acceptable to do such things. i hope it's illegal. >> local resident ray zarkova tells us she was confused when the red curbs popped up seemingly overnight this week. as you can see, sfmta has had to start repainting some of these fake curbs. gray again. that's because whoever did this made some of them much longer than the 20ft that's actually required by the state's daylighting law. and that fact has frustrated a lot of loca

i'm dan ashley. >> and i'm ama daetz. this latest wildfire to erupt in southern california continues to spread quickly along one of the main routes into los angeles. >> interstate five in the santa clarita area is shut down. that's about 30 miles north of the city. 55,000 people live either in the mandatory evacuation zones or are under the evacuation warnings, including several schools in that area. now, this fire is being called the hughes fire because it's centered along lake hughes road near interstate five near castaic. that's north of both the eaton and the palisades fires. keep in mind, already the fire has burned more than 8000 acres since it started about 1030 this morning. that's how rapidly this thing is spreading. but fortunately, no injuries are reported so far. no structures are immediately threatened in the mostly rural and mountainous burn zone. >> this latest fire comes as santa ana winds lead to new red flag warnings from los angeles to san diego. wind speeds of up to 50mph are forecast for la. citizens

i'm dan ashley. after the deadliest isis inspired attack on u.s. soil in years, more than 1000 law enforcement officers are tracking down new leads tonight. sources tell abc news that investigators found bomb making materials in the killer's home in houston. he's believed to have planted explosive devices in the area of bourbon street, changed clothes, then drove through the new year's eve crowds before being killed by officers. tonight, we're learning more about the victims. a growing memorial along bourbon street. >> we laid 14 yellow roses down for our 14 victims this morning in a show of resilience. >> and i know with this music, it is. >> a second line band played as the street reopened to the public law enforcement on every corner. >> so it feels safe. and it's all clean out here and everything, but personally it just feels a little eerie after what happened. >> 14 people were killed in wednesday's terror attack. among the victims, 18 year old nakia dedeaux, who was out with friends on new year's eve. >> everybody loved her. she was just so b

i'm dan ashley. >> and i'm julian glover. the closures are part of oakland's effort to close a $129 million budget deficit. >> money very tight. the brown outs will impact stations 25 and 28 and are expected to last six months. abc seven news reporter luz pena is following the story and has more. >> reporter this is a reality of a city facing a $129 million budget deficit. cuts need to be made and these two firehouses will close on monday. >> there are no firehouses that we can afford to close. we need every firehouse we have and then some. >> oakland's fire chief said data led them to these stations, which are among the least busy, according to the last published fire response report. oakland's firefighters responded to more than 54,000 calls in 2023. fire engine, 28 responded to just 405. of those. fire station 25 responded to 834. >> right now, these two firehouses will be closed for the next six months through the through the end of the fiscal year. uh- at at the end of the fiscal year. these firehouses will open back up.

i'm dan ashley. >> and i'm ama daetz. we've been tracking the situation for hours now.oting happened at ninth and mission around 5:00 tonight. the victim is in the hospital with no word on how badly they are hurt. >> abc seven news reporter tim johns is live at the scene with new details from a witness. tim, obviously still a very large police presence out there right now. >> dan that's right. now, police have asked us to stay behind this wall behind me here for our own safety. i'm told they're still involved in an active negotiation inside an apartment complex just around the corner here. but i can tell you, since we have been out here, we have heard several flash bangs going off around the neighborhood. now, all of this is believed to have started around 5 p.m. this afternoon, when sfpd responded to the area for reports of a shooting. when officers arrived on scene, they found a victim with apparent gunshot wounds being treated by paramedics, with the suspect fleeing inside a nearby building. sfpd says they're using special tactical and hostage negotiation teams now.

. >> and i'm dan ashley. thanks for joining us. let's bring in abc seven news meteorologist sandhya patel. sandhya, there is a red flag warning, right? >> that's right. and dan and ama, that red flag warning has been extended until friday morning. so let me show you a live picture once again from that hughes fire that is burning, you can see that the fire is starting to move uphill. the winds are pushing the flames. let me show you kind of to give you a little more perspective as to where it is. it is just north of santa clarita, 9400 acres. it is dry and gusty right now, 52 degrees. look at the relative humidity, 7%. and those winds are out of the northeast, gusting to 35 miles an hour, drying out the atmosphere even more so the red flag warning until 10 a.m. friday. gusty winds, very low humidity. you combine that with wind advisories and warnings that are up. and this is just going to be dangerous situation. and it's an advisory until 10 p.m. tonight. it becomes a warning from 10 p.m. tonight going into 2 p.m. thursday, looking a

i'm dan ashley and i'm j.r. >> stone for those of you who are live streaming us you've been watching live coverage from our sister station in los angeles on the wildfires. >> they are doing an amazing job. the newest fire is called the kenneth fire, burning in the west hills near calabasas on the border of los angeles and ventura counties. this is a live picture. now you can see all of the fire trucks lined up trying to get to these flames in the calabasas area, bottom left of your screen. there you can see a fire burning very actively, not under control at all. mandatory evacuations are in place. nearly 1000 acres have burned since this fire sparked about 330 this afternoon. our sister station in los angeles was flying over the fire soon after it started. a helicopter reporter, chris christie had this perspective. >> structure protection. air attack. a shift in the winds and a lot of brush clearance in this community. and so as the wind was driving the fire through the neighborhood, it would just die out. once that brush turned into low, shallow grass, it became a low, shallow grass

. >> i'm ama daetz and i'm dan ashley. thanks for joining us. it's been a brutal firefight for more than six hours. the palisades fire started about 1030 this morning with dangerous winds helping fanned the flames. it has already scorched more than 1200 acres. and there are mandatory evacuations. >> this is in the pacific palisades area. and while there's not an official count from cal fire, there is video showing numerous homes on fire. it moved so quickly. some people have abandoned their cars in order to escape, and firefighters have swooped in to make rescues. the fire chief for los angeles county had this warning, telling people to be ready to evacuate. >> the national weather service has predicted that the winds are going to pick up and get worse. we're going to have the most significant wind event between 10 p.m. this evening and 5 a.m. tomorrow morning. >> part of the pacific coast highway is closed because of the fire. about 30,000 people have been told they need to get out of harm's way. and here's a live look now. as darkness has fall
