we begin with jonathan hunt in pacific palisades. than. >> and that, kayeigh, was the reality for thousands and a terrifying reality it was. among those who had to literally run for their lives and in many cases be helped to run for their lives were children who were here at the methodist church preschool. and as you can see, if they hadn't been able to get out of here, you can just imagine what would have happened. this is the result of the fire for this building. you can see parts of the church tower still standing. and i just want to show you a little glimpse. we're talking about tiny little kids here. and there's a tradition at this church school that at the end of every year, when they graduate, the kids paint a tile, put their name on it, and leave it. they were all affixed to this wall. all the way around this wall. year after year the kids did this. and now they are all lying on the ground here. yesterday, as we were here, some parents were coming along and they were sifting through the rubble. all around here. just trying to

jonathan hunt. we are now an hour and a half in to what was supposed to be a cease fire between israel and hamas in the bloody 15 month long war. but the deal has been delayed. and at this hour, the idf says it is continuing its attacks in gaza because, according to israeli prime minister benjamin netanyahu, hamas has reneged on its promise to hand over a list of the names of hostages to be released sunday. hamas claims the delay is due to, quote, technical field reasons, and says it remains committed to the terms of the ceasefire. but netanyahu says the deal cannot move forward without the list. the hamas run health ministry, meantime, claims at least eight people in gaza have been killed in idf strikes since the ceasefire was supposed to begin. now, if and when the ceasefire does get underway, it will mark the first pause in fighting in months in the war. that was sparked, of course, by the horrific hamas attacks of october 7th, 2023. as part of the agreement, hamas is scheduled to release three f

jonathan hunt is live in pacific palisades with the latest out there. , jonathan. >> good morning to you, bret. we're just about three hours away now from the red flag wind warnings being lifted here across the l.a. area. that will be a huge sigh of relief for everybody who has suffered through so much over the last couple of weeks. but as the fire danger now begins to dissipate, so the focus turns to rebuilding the communities like this in the palisades, which has been completely and utterly destroyed by the fires. so president trump's visit here on the ground in the pacific palisades later today will be of note. we understand that california governor gavin newsom plans to greet president trump on the tarmac when he lands. there will be much to discuss given that the president has been very critical of california and l.a.'s response to these fires and preparedness for them. criticizing, for instance, the lack of water being delivered from northern california to southern california. the governor said yesterday that is entirely irrelevant to what happened

let's go live to chief correspondent jonathan hunt in california. rapy are the winds have been blowing vary strongly for hours now here about 40 miles north of downtown los angeles making the job difficult again for firefighters as they battle to stop the flames from spreading as they did yesterday. this guy gives you an idea of how fast the flames have moved and how destructive they are. earlier today, we watched a new fire break out across the lake, at new pop-up fire and the super scooper is brought in the aircraft to try to back down the flames as best they could. an extraordinary sight as the pilots brought those planes over the lake and maid contact with the water for about 15 seconds each loading up then flew round after round over the new flames before eventually dousing them. we've also seen hotshot cruise on the ridge tamping down hot spots and hoping they can keep the flames from once again threatening the thousands of homes they did yesterday. we also had one other fire pop-up overnight that was near the famed getty center and also threat

jonathan hunt has a latest in castaic, california. where are we now before the sun comes up? >> bill, we're at the end of what has been another terrifying 24 hours for tens of thousands of residents. we have a little bit of good news this morning. the hughes fire, the biggest that you mentioned, 10,000 acres so far burned, seems to be dissipating now. as you look across what is castaic lake in front of us you can see the far side some of those embers still burning but it is now firefighters got it burning into what is essentially a wilderness area away from the tens of thousands of homes that they did have concerns about yesterday. so it was not the case through most of yesterday as those flames raged through this area forcing all of those people to evacuate and everybody taking evacuation orders now very seriously in the wake of what we've seen in the l.a. area over the last couple of weeks, of course. but yes, good news this morning, also the other fire you mentioned, the sepulveda fire, that was near the iconic getty center. also near some very high-and homes in the bel ai

jonathan hunt is in pacific palisades. how does it look this morning, jonathan? >> dana and bill, good morning to both of you. we're in, as you mentioned, day six of this ongoing tragedy and we're in really now the calm before the next windstorm. winds -- we're in a red flag warning right now. we moved back in just around this time tomorrow into what the national weather service calls a particularly dangerous situation. pds. that was the situation last tuesday morning when the flames ripped through here in the palisades wreaking this kind of damage across such a huge swath of what was an idyllic part of los angeles. there are so many questions, of course. people want to know rightly why there wasn't water in some of the fire hydrants? they want to know why there was a nearby reservoir that was empty? those questions will eventually be answered, we assume. now it's a question for so many people of literally picking up the pieces of their lives. i want to talk to you about one person. individual cases often more meaningful in these situations when so many hundreds

jonathan hunt is standing by. let's go to bill melugin in pacific palisades this morning, good morning, bill. >> good morning. unfortunately the updates get worse and worse out here. we're now up to ten confirmed fatalities as a result of these wildfires, two of which were right here at the palisades fire where more than 5,000 structures have been destroyed, dana, it looks like a bomb went off out here. looks like it was carpet bombed. look at the street we're on right now. every single house that we are on this street has been completely destroyed, burned down to its foundation an both sides of the street. take a look. melted cars. the only things remaining are the bricks and chimneys. when you look in the rubble of these homes there is nothing left that would remind you people are living here. no tvs, computers, dressers, clothes, no nothing. look across the way. we continue having fires just break out here up here in the palisades area. that was not burning as of ten minutes ago. we don't know if it is a reigni

. >> fox's jonathan hunt is in los angeles with the latest. >> bird flu is still spreading in the u.sd now health officials are tracking a new strain. the world organization for animal health reported monday that the first case of the h5n1 avian flu was found in poultry at a duck farm in merced county, california. the more common strain was also found at the same farm, and more than 119,000 birds were killed there in recent months. the risk to the general public remains low, but some doctors are concerned that the emergence of a new strain means the virus could be changing. >> there is that small possibility that there could be a genetic mutation that would then allow the virus to be transmitted person to person. >> h5n1 is rarer than the bird flu strain that caused most of the damage last year. it's highly pathogenic, and now farms throughout the west are stepping up mitigation efforts, trying their best to keep the virus out. >> we're fearful every day the chickens, boy, they get it and they're dead in a day. you'll know right away if you've got it. >> and of course, that's not help

let's go to jonathan hunt. >> it is an extraordinary seem.at was the methodist church here, the community methodist church, you can see the tower, the remains of it still standing there. i want to point out the back end of this was a preschool, one of several schools here from which children were evacuated, suddenly, terrifyingly, as the flames ripped through here. the main business district of the palisades, you can see the extent of the devastation. there are a couple of building still standing but as you look around, hundreds of families have lost everything. hundreds of families went through a terrifying experience and have come home to find they have nothing left of their homes, except the memories they have built up in many ways and many instances here are over decades. it is that kind of community. so many people tonight have nothing left. >> thank you, jonathan. i'm jonathan hunt. it is a momentous day in the middle east as a ceasefire between israel and hamas is finally and officially in effect, and three hostages are due to be released by hamas within hours. the start of the ceasefire was delayed by nearly three hours because hamas failed to hand over the names of the three female hostages, who are set to be released today. hamas said the delay was due to, quote, technical reasons. the names of the hostages were released last hour and the ceasefire began almost immediately after that. hamas plans to release all three hostages at 4 p.m. local time in israel. that's 9 a.m. eastern time today. an additional 30 hostages are expected to be freed over the next few weeks. in exchange, israel israel will release 95 palestinians on sunday, including ten who are believed to be under 18. they've been held in israeli prisons. in total, israel will release more than 700 palestinians as part of the first phase of the deal. additionally, israeli troops will withdraw from po
