i'm joined now by north carolina governor josh stein. governor, thank you so much for being with us, and congratulations on your new job. >> thank you. >> you've got a lot on your plate right now. what sort of weather impacts are you expecting in your state? what are you bracing for? what kind of help are you anticipating? you're going to have to dole out? >> yeah, we're worried about freezing rain and ice accumulation, particularly in the mountains. >> the northern part of the mountains, especially. we are braced for whatever comes our way. and our emergency management team is ready to provide whatever help is necessary. but the consequences of this storm really underscore the urgency for us to respond to hurricane helene, which was just a massive, devastating storm of immense consequence. more than 100 lives lost, $60 billion in damages. it's just an insane amount of money. thousands, tens of thousands of homes damaged or destroyed, private roads and bridges, some 8000 small businesses lost out on billions of dollars of revenue. vital

but it was the president and he was met by the democratic governor here, josh stein on the the tarmact then he started going after fema and talking about immediate relief efforts, but talking about the very existence of fema has had its time. >> i'll also be signing an executive order to begin the process of fundamentally reforming and overhauling fema, or maybe getting rid of fema. i think, frankly, fema is not good. i think when you have a problem like this, i think you want to go. and whether it's a democrat or a republican governor, you want to use your state to fix it and not waste time calling fema. >> so, so many questions here with that statement. first of all, state and local agencies actually are the first line of defense in terms of helping citizens. if fema comes in after that fact and fema is still on the ground here, and there's no question there are critics on all sides of how fema has done its work in this broad devastation of hurricane helene, largely with housing vouchers and the like. but there are also true signs of need here. there was a woman who was holding up a

now, josh stein, he's not as well known as gavin newsom, of course. north carolina has a republican state legislature, more of a purple, lean, red leaning republican state. so a bit of a different scenario than california. but look, we could potentially see, you know, a tone shift. i think oftentimes, you know, particularly in california, when you land, you get on the ground, you see the devastation. it could potentially, you know, change his perspective. i was talking with a republican lawmaker this week from southern california, and they mentioned that. that being said, though, i mean, we might see a tone shift for the time being. you know, if he meets with gavin newsom will likely see potentially a show of unity. but we know that there's a lot of tension between the two. we know that california is considered a quintessentially blue state, and there are a lot of republicans here in washington who want to condition the aid that's going to california saying that, you know, this has gotten out of hand because of democratic leadership. but ultimately, i

you know, i've seen obviously, you know, governor josh stein who will meet the president on the tarmac today, step up and work with housing, especially private roads and bridges. but again, we're hearing that frustration. and these people that are in hotels sometimes, you know, hours away from their home, finding a very efficient way to get them back on their property with trailers cut through the regulations, cut through the red tape and find a way. i think, you know, when you're in local government, you start at yes, until you have to say no. and so the inability to communicate, having people getting ready to get thrown out of their hotels and our and then finding out it could be extended, i think washington and governor stein have done a good job extending that now for months. people need that stability. you know, again, as i've said time and time again, other than the words i love you, the most important word in the english language is home. and these people want to stay home. they want to rebuild. and cutting through that red tape, having fema as a partner, but also in fairness to
