host: kelly? guest: i agree. that is such a good example of you can't be what you can't see. i was thinking about the symbolic importance of having women in positions of political power. it is important to tangibly measure that. i have colleagues who have done work to look at young people and who they see as political leaders. we do see biases even the women are increasing their representation. it is more likely if you see a young person to draw a political leader they draw a man because that is what they're used to seeing. that has real ripple and psychological effects because young women may say, what are my options? is politics one of those? i should add that there are of course racial disparities across this level of office. the same is true. if you don't see individuals like you who share those identities and experiences, you might decide that this place is not for you and what that means is you lose your voice in the political process. so, it's important and that is one of the reasons we do

i'm kelly evans. here's what's ahead. markets are reeling from the earnings. yields are rising, stocks are sinking and the broader market has eerate raced election gains. that's different between the past three times, between election and inauguration day. don't expect to start yelding lower. good news is, he thinks it might not be so far off. plus we'll look at the markets and other things going on. days after an illegal sports block was moved. disney, fox and warner brothers are pulling the plug. the question is why? what's next? and what does it mean for the broader landscape, which continues to shift rapidly. >> and the quest for greenland. why trump wants it and whethers his attempt to a82ir it. let's start with today's sell- off. and dom has more for us. >> it is a sell-off. and that bear means, we are kind of near recession lows now. if you look across the major indices. we have dow down 641 points. 1.5% decline. for the broader-based s&p 500, current level is 5831, which is down 86 points. again, 1 1/2% decline there. even at the highs of the session,

i'm kelly evans. here's what's ahead, stocks are weaker today. our guest said there's a different crisis, the market is underpricing. . the news from president trump he'll be creating an external federal revenue service, the s&p is up.5% since the election. plus, tiktok denying a report it's weighing a report to elon musk. the most likely path forward. >>> the sectors, strategist coming out top this earnings season. dom chu has the very latest. >> that's right, kelly a very symmetrical market. especially for the s&p 500 on a broader large-cap basis. at 5824, down 11 points, now at the highest of the session we were up roughly 35 points and down 31 points at the low, so, again, fairly symmetrical. we're tilting to the negative side today. 5824 is the level you want to watch, that 100-day more medium to longer term average price for the s&p 500, on a rolling basis. the dow industrials, just about flat on the session right now the nasdaq composite, the tech-led selloff might be a little bit steam the mid-day. 80-point decline there. as for some of t

kelly. >> yeah.well, you know, we get the big the biggest of the big who kind of comprise so much so much of the market cap. so brian i guess on that point there's not much that the bond market is going to take from earnings season unless it all of a sudden comes out and pulls the rug out from underneath the macro narrative. >> yeah, i. >> guess that's a risk obviously if the stock market really corrects. but i don't think that's the story for right now. right. the story is people are continuing to buy every dip. we've got the december swoon from maybe from interest rates, maybe just from profit taking. but you see the buying in corporate bonds, you see it in high yield. you see it more clearly in equities. so i think you're going to continue to make new tights and listen to higher yields correctly. brings out more buyers. and so i think the bond market is going to be okay for a little while longer. again watch that five five and a quarter level for where you start to really get some fear. i think. >

>> kelly, very simply, it's got to be fundamentals.nomic growth, the fed making progress on inflation. business doing what it does best, do business, so the consumer remaining resilient and jobs numbers resilient and on top of that effectively what you're looking for is an environment where jobs keep growing. we've got all of that now and we have a bond market based on the fact that there are some very heavy duty players who want the fed to lower rates much more than the fed currently wants to do, and we think the fed's doing the right job and we think they will do it. i don't think they can enforce jerome powell to do anything he doesn't see as warranted. >> i don't want to say all of this is. it's a tantrum to make sure that the fed doesn't cut on make sure that the fed -- huh? tell me again. >> it's an emotional reaction and it's also a tactical move by traders. i mean, there are two types of investors -- there are many types of investors, but the two types of investors, basically you have traders that tend to be leveraged and the l

kelly. >> to the tune of 20% or so. tom, thanks. let's look at the broader markets. the dow is actually falling into positive territory, up a third of 1%, but the s&p is down nearly 2%. and the nasdaq is tanking by 3.5% today. let's look at where nvidia worst day since march 2020. it's shed about half $1 trillion in market cap today losing the 3 trillion mark. and as the session continues, interestingly enough, it kind of continues to pick up steam in the sell off. it's down now more than 17% now those energy names as well, which had been big winners on hopes we need massive power for the ai boom. while investors are rethinking that today, this dress down 28%, constellation 20%, talon down about the same amount. tom. >> all right, well, the markets lost in deep thought over deep seeks claims that it built an ai model in just a couple of months for less than $6 million, not a b million dollars. it's a tiny fraction of what u.s. companies are spending on artificial intelligence. build out. mos

likely a couple of reasons why, kelly.irst up, incoming president trump is seen going after iran in a big way, when he takes office. iran's oil exports, they have been gaining steam. they have been growing the last couple of years. so this could make some oil go off the market. also got some new sanctions put on by the biden administration on russian oil a few weeks ago. those were seen impacting global oil supplies. it's all impacting oil and gas stocks. as you mentioned, i heard in the show, "the exchange," 1:00 p.m. eastern time, the exxon oil and gas etf 15 of the last 16 times ever. >> we have donated closure of critical colonial pipeline. this pipeline expected to be closed through friday. it's all done to check for a possible leak in georgia. the colonial pipeline, you'll hear about it when it's bad news, is the critical artery for gasoline from houston to here. there is plenty. don't go out right now and fill up. we talked about it yesterday, kelly. plenty of gasoline right now. but, we do see in a longer closure o

, everyone just wants to -- kelly. where is nvidia going? it's the taxidriver thesis and that is what worries me. everybody is talking about the same five stocks over and over. >> the only pushback i have is i'm not sure nvidia is the one. maybe your reactions to minor or nonexistent but i'm not sure it's the one people care the most about. i think broad, is an interesting turning point. >> the new nvidia, brought a calm? >> it doesn't have to be those chips. >> that's totally fair but i think that's too nuanced. if we are talking about the taxidriver, the catchall, doesn't really care whether it's nvidia or broadcom, it's chips, it's gpu's, it's the story. you play that through nvidia, broadcom, is largely irrelevant. that is what is driving some of the other elements i mentioned. >> do you care that apple is down 3% and what do you can make of the fact that this company which -- was the best match had some of the most superlative stats in the market. >> listen, apple is a powerhouse. obviously -- not obviously cash w

for us, kelly, that is a dream.etting negative sentiment, people do want to touch the stocks and the reality is it is really tough to change supply. so, to your point on lumber, the market swallowed with it being over 30% tariffs, they swallowed that. how? prices went higher. if you look at 2016 to 2020, prices were well above where they started at during that tariff discussion and ended up going into the profits and free cash flow of those canadian producers. we still own west fraser, it has been a wonderful investment. >> so, you bought the canadian lumber company. are the oil companies that you like, then, are those canadian names? >> correct. our biggest is make energy, a single asset producer in kristina lake, they produce what they call heavy oil or heavy crude which is where you literally steam up the tar and you get oil out of it. so, that is a pretty common process of there, that is the kind of oil we are talking about, it is not sweet crude that we have in the permian. the other name down there is jeff kon

>>> welcome to power lunch, everybody, alongside kelly, i am brian. stocks have turned lower. bond yields are pulling back, but they were the highest we have seen, kelly, since april. the rate spike causing stocks to sink. >> as we are saying this, we are back at 471 on the 10 year, as we get the minutes coming out right now. steve, do tell. >> the federal reserve, at its december meeting, was at or near the point, after cutting by a quarter, of slowing its policy easing. the rate cut that they did enact was seen as, "finely balanced." it was a finely balanced call, and some wanted to not cut at all. that is more than just one dissent. not everybody has the vote. the minute say that the fed cut rates to maintain the strength of the economy and the labor market, while continuing progress on inflation, because they believe they were restricted. the risk between inflation and unemployment were seen as roughly balanced. inflation had eased substantially, the remains somewhat elevated. what you will hear next is a lot of the back-and-forth of the meeting between those most concerne

kelly, we'll start with you. what are you expecting to see from the president's three state trip today? >> i would think one of the things the president will want to do is get a sense of how have things changed? he was here in north carolina as candidate trump back in october, where he saw the initial recovery. and now to see that here we are months later, and there are all kinds of businesses like this, homes, parts of the community where debris is very visible, where recovery still has a long way to go. so what is the snapshot difference from his visit then to now? and now it's his responsibility in part to lead the recovery effort. so what will he have to say about that? the president gave us a sense of what's on his mind when he was leaving the white house, talking to reporters a short time ago, and part of that was concern and criticism for how the people and communities hit by these disasters have been treated. here's what he had to say. >> north carolina's been. >> a horrible. >> thing, the. >> way that's.
