in washington, chris pollone, nbc news.nt biden declared today as the national day of mourning of the late president carter, and a national organization is remembering the late president's work that changed thousands of lives. late president and mrs. carter dedicated themselves to habitat for humanity for almost 40 years. the organization says the couple renovated or repaired about 4500 homes in 14 different countries during that time. habitat groups across the world are remembering the late president. today, the east bay silicon valley group is erecting a memorial. some doors at oakland and san jose city halls. the doors symbolize president carter's legacy of opening doors to better futures for habitat homeowners. so back in 2013, here in san jose, he helped us out building playhouses for local community organizations, doing a community improvement project over at lake cunningham park. and he also helped us renovate two homes for sale through affordable mortgages to families with limited incomes here in san jose. and in re

here's nbc bay area's robert honda. san jose and oakland firefighters have already been applying public pressure to get their cities to hire more help. the l.a. county fires are giving them another chance to make their case. san jose and oakland say the fires down south are a good reminder of what can happen here due to the similar urban wildland mix and the low number of firefighters for the population. i think the bottom line is numbers don't lie. according to staffing numbers compiled by the san jose fire department and the bay area news group in los angeles, there is nearly one firefighter per 1000 residents, and while firefighters there complain about those figures, san jose is actually lower, hovering between 0.67 to 0.75, while oakland has just over one firefighter per 1000 people. the national average tops one and a half. the san jose firefighters union says it will be pushing the city to boost their budget because they believe their staffing and benefits have fallen behind in comparison to san francisco. also j

nbc's audrey asistio has that story.row, we'll pick up zenni from fire evacuees in altadena to new beginnings in the bay area. dad's going to get here. tanya paz and her daughter clementine had no idea. early dismissal. last tuesday, her school closed early. we had emergency pickup due to the high winds. would be the last. they'd see clementine school in a while. later that evening, the eaton fire had sparked to the north of them, and by wednesday morning they learned the fire was rapidly expanding into altadena. clementine recalls. the sky looked different that day, but it woke up. it was yellow instead of a regular color. they were forced to leave their homin altadena. we were just outside the formal evacuation zone. however, there were police officers evacuating our area. the police came and called and called mommy for a long time, and then it said to go. they spent the next few days waiting for updates. on saturday, they learned clementine school was safe with little damage, but heading back to class wasn't going to

here's nbc's robert honda. today, santa clara county says it now has the 600 volunteers needed to conduct the two day count. wednesday and thursday, they will fan out to count the unsheltered, and this year, they'll have a new app to collect more than just numbers. the bay area had almost 39,000 sheltered and unsheltered people in the last pit count in 2023. santa clara county had the highest local number with 9903, and many advocates say they believe the number is much higher. now, the county says next week's point in time count will determine if that's true. we're so grateful to everybody who has signed up. it's a huge community wide effort. the training has been provided to all volunteers. part of the training is guidance on using this new app called counting us, which will stream back real time counts and help identify where the highest concentration of unsheltered people are located. the app also allows the volunteers and the experienced workers they are paired with to do more than just count those living

sergio quintana, nbc, bay area news. down south, firefighters are using every tool available to put down the hughes fire, managing to get a large portion of that fire contained today. the fire sparked yesterday morning near santa clarita. it's grown to over 10,000 acres, but crews managed to stop the forward spread last night. containment now at 24%. firefighters say overnight water drops made a huge difference in gaining that containment. meantime, crews were able to lilift some evacuation orders for parts of pacific palisades. this comes two weeks after that devastating palisades fire swept through the town into malibu. the fire is now 72% contained, and the eaton fire near pasadena is now 95% contained. new numbers show both fires destroyed over 16,000 structures. more relief money is heading to l.a. just over an hour ago, governor newsom signed a $2.5 billion fire relief package. the money will go to the state's emergency disaster response efforts, including evacuation shelters and cleaning up hazardous waste. state
