at chicago o'hare, one of the busiest airports, a grounded delay is in effect through tonight.tions for us in washington, d.c. terry, the storm could dump as much as 12 inches of snow when it's all said and done. what are conditions like where you are, especially on the roads? >> yeah, the snow is continuing to come down in d.c. and it's white and fluffy, not too heavy. we are expecting 2 to 3 more inches before all is said and done but this has put a stop to washington, d.c. public schools and d.c. government offices are closed. traffic as you mentioned, is actually pretty good if we take a look at the roads right now. the plows were able to get through earlier. it's light and fluffy so not too much of a problem here, which is good news for folks because if you look at the airports, that is where the real masses, looking at 1800 cancellations, more than 4000 delays nationwide, o'hare was at a ground stop earlier, some airports, if you don't have a flight that's canceled or delayed, you are incredly lucky. but there are some folks that are really enjoying this. i want to show y

flights were canceled at o'hare airport due to the cold. officials were pleading with people who commute outside to try and limit that as much as possible, saying frostbite can kick in in conditions like this in as little as 20 to 30 minutes. really asking people to be careful. farther east, absolute whiteout. buffalo, new york, and parts of upstate, officials there declaring a state of emergency as feet of lake-effect snow, fresh snow, dumped on the area. some parts of the suburbs getting 18 inches. a time lapse showed how quickly it came in. officials, again, declaring a state of emergency, closing things like city hall and government buildings early. even shutting down a local highway because the roads were an absolute mess. we saw a semi-truck that stalled and crashed into the barrier on a highway. people asking to be careful out there this morning. back in chicago, it is topping out at a toasty high of 22 degrees, craig. >> at least it'll warm up in the windy city. maggie, thank you so much. negative 12. >> maggie, you win. you win. th

chicago o'hare is reporting 31 cancellations, 69 delays there. here in the bay area, san francisco international is seeing five cancellations, 28 delays today. this according to flightaware. one traveler from new york said it's been busy. >> there were some delays. newark had some runway shutdown because of the snow, so we sat on the runway for about an hour and a half more than we were supposed to, but everything was safe in the end. >> nationwide, more than 800 flights are canceled. more than 10,000 are delayed as of this morning. >> time is 709. a pretty badly damaged motorcycle being put up on a tow truck eastbound 24. as you head out of the tunnel, head over toward walnut creek and there's the motorcycle on the right. ended up in the bushes there and someone was injured. they took that person away. the fire department is still on the scene, and people are getting by. at one point, all the lanes were blocked. so there's a pretty significant backup now on eastbound 24 coming into the caldecott out of oakland. westbound 24 has improved a little

the airport at that time wasn't that active because of o'hare was built and a lot of the airport wasind of quiet. when jimmy carter flew in, they had the organizations out there. we had the bands and balloons. he came out and talked. he was a very humble man. and that was the first time i met jimmy carter. and second time just before the november election, the late richard d.daly had the torch parade from all the organizations throughout the state of illinois and went from 4:00 in the afternoon, all the way to 2:00 in the morning and jimmy carter was there. he stayed there saluting each flow or band that came through. and also, when the late mayor passed away in december of 1976, he came to the mayor daly's funeral and we were all there. and jimmy carter was a humble man and talked to each person that was there and shook our hands. and also, the dinners that we attended at the democratic cook county party, he attended. but what i didn't like is when the late mayor burn became mayor of chicago when jimmy carter was running for re-election. cook county had the dinner down at the lake f
