joining me now is democratic senator peter welch of vermont.ator welch, thank you for being with us. last summer, your state experienced devastating and historic flooding. what did you learn during that experience that may lend any assistance or advice to folks in california right now? >> well, i'd say a couple things. first of all, it's incredibly devastating in the aftermath. it's obviously incredibly devastating for the folks who lost their homes and their businesses. kids who lost their schools, five schools, i think have been burned. and that trauma continues. the initial shock, you start to get over it, but then you have a destroyed school, a destroyed home, a lost business. so that's one. and it really requires each of us who have been so lucky as not to have been directly impacted, to reach out and remember to keep reaching out. second, there's a real challenge with fema and response. fema does a great job in the initial recovery. but then when you're trying to deal with the bureaucracy about getting if you're on the town select board,

one of them, peter welch of vermont, who told me that she did a good job, and he asked her if he's considering supporting her and he would not comment on that and did not share the same concerns as other democrats, that she would not be independent enough from donald trump, who on the campaign trail vowed to go after his political enemies. now, this nomination, though, could move in the next few weeks. it's uncertain, jake, when exactly the vote would happen in the senate judiciary committee. there's still paperwork that needs to be completed. the chairman of that committee, chuck grassley, told me that once that is completed, they plan to have the vote in his committee. and john thune, the senate majority leader, plans to move on these nominations rather quickly in this congress. so her confirmation hearing today, republicans believe she did what she needed to do, ultimately to get the job in a matter of weeks here, jake. all right. >> manu raju on capitol hill, thanks so much. let's bring in amisha cross, who worked in communications for former president obama. also with me, alex conant, who

i caught up with one democratic senator, peter welch of vermont, who told me that he did that.he believes that bondi did a good job, and he suggested that he could be open to voting for her. cory booker to the new jersey democrat, didn't rule out voting for her as well, so that he was still reviewing some of the things that she had said. so there's some signs that perhaps she could potentially get bipartisan support as well. there's some controversial picks also going through hearings today, including russ vought, who's the head of the white house budget office. he was picked to be that position, that one of the most powerful positions in government. he has very conservative. he has conservative views. a lot of democrats are concerned about some of the things that he wants to do in terms of the federal regulations, as well as cutting spending and the like. so how does he ultimately do in winning bipartisan support? that might be a little bit harder, but they don't need bipartisan support. dana, as you well know, simple majority is enough in the united states senate that is cont
